Tooties were invented by former aerospace scientist John Hanson, back in 1962 to improve his own very young children. As the children grew, new types of Tooties and Tooties equipment were developed to address different areas of teaching.

Berta, 4, Could not talk in Costa Rica
Dr. Hanson's picture had appeared on the front page of a newspaper along with the teachers he was helping at a school for learning disability.
Berta's parents were quite wealthy and had taken her to all kinds of specialists and they could find no reason why she didn't talk. The two older sisters, 8 and 10, talked fine.
First they called to see if Dr. Hanson was available and he said he could take a look over the weekend if they could pick him up. Berta's city was about three hours drive away. Dr. Hanson asked that Berta be brought but not the sisters. On the drive back Dr. Hanson played Tooties with Berta and found her to be quite sharp and alert but still not talking. It was very puzzling.
