Summary: All about Infants and Toddlers with some prices and background info on how Tooties got started.
Tooties for Infants and Toddlers
Background: Tooties were invented in 1960 by Dr. John Hanson for his first toddler who was about a year old. He quickly discovered the benefits of having many Tooties and soon other parents wanted them for their children. It turned out that children of all ages love them and can benefit enormously. What Dr. Hanson invented by chance was a series of universal educational devices whose uses change as the child gets older. Thus the child never gets tired of them. So if you get lots of Tooties as soon as possible your children will benefit for many years even up thru college and soon their children will be using the same Tooties. Besides inventing something with universal appeal Dr. Hanson wanted Tooties to last forever in spite of advice to the contrary where many things are designed to wear out quickly. If a Tootie should ever break, return it for a free replacement. There is so time limit or proof of purchase required. Just save as much of it as you can for analysis and include $6.30 for each Tootie returned for shipping and handling.
By 1962 Tooties were in full production and today millions of children have benefited all over the world. In the U.S. almost every school district uses Tooties for improving reading, math and science as well as coordination and self-esteem. It turned out that Tooties were also useful for improving vision and thousands of eye doctors use them to help patients. Tooties are also excellent for helping old people stay fit or helping those recovering from illness or accidents. Almost any learning problem at any age can be cured quickly using Tooties. One of the best things about Tooties is that when used early in homes most of these problems can be avoided so Tooties are excellent for prevention.
Infants and Toddlers: Our best advice is that parents should get one or two dozen Tooties in an assortment of bright colors when their child is about eight months old. By the time the child is ready to crawl parents should add about a carton or two of Tooties. Each carton contains 72 Tooties and are much cheaper that way so wise parents will start with two or three cartons knowing how much their child will benefit as well as any later children. One of the many secrets of Tooties is that they are completely safe for both parents and children. Thus if a child should leave some on the floor parents won't stumble on them. Another secret is that they are very soft and conformable to one's hands as well as very heavy. The reason they must be heavy is that it is wise to strengthen a child's muscles as early as possible in a safe way to avoid injuries. Three Tooties weigh one pound so if a child can lift a dozen Tooties in a cloth bag they are lifting four lbs. and yet if they should fall on bare toes they don't hurt. Even ten lbs. of Tooties doesn't hurt.
When the child is crawling parents should make a number of criss cross towers of Tooties about ten to fifteen high about the room and encourage the child to crawl around and knock them over with his or her head or any part of their body. Parents should show their delight and make more towers. At some point the child will want to make her own towers so she can knock them down. Elementary age children delight in making towers 17 or more higher as it is so challenging.
Tooties are completely washable and even sterilizable in boiling water and when frozen become a soft ice cube for babies who are teething. Regular Tooties can also be baked in the oven to teach children to be careful of hot objects. Hot Tooties are lots of fun to squeeze and fondle, even for adults. In the beginning set your oven to about 150øF and later 200ø. Don't go over 300ø as the fabric could be damaged. Regular Tooties are designed so they transmit heat very slowly. Since any Tooties with Smoothy Tootie Crystals transmit heat very quickly these should not be heated more than 150øF. Leaving Tooties on the dash of a hot car is a good way to try them out. By the way a dozen Tooties are excellent to keep children busy while in the car.
For parents who want the best for their kids we suggest you get six cartons of Tooties which is called a unit. This is the ideal quantity for children in the range of 2 to 12 as determined by various university studies. Older children can still benefit tremendously if you have them but you don't need so many as they get older. Parents and schools get the best price when ordering six cartons of Tooties and since they last forever and children never get tired of them it is a great investment in their development. By about age two the child starts putting them end to end to make roads across the floor. Older children will appreciate that three Tooties end to end equal one foot and ten end to end equal one meter. All of a sudden math becomes interesting and more meaningful. With six cartons of Tooties 144 feet of roads can be made all over the house. Even bridges and underpasses for older children. Children can also sort the Tooties by color and even by weight if you request that two of your six cartons be of different weights and textures. Now the child can have even more fun sorting the Tooties.
Parents of infants and toddlers should go to the library and read the book "Playful Parenting" by Graselli and Hegner. It has many ideas on developing your child from 0 to 3 years old and you will see Dr. Hanson's name in there along with many of his ideas and illustrations on how to use Tooties and the various pieces of Tootie equipment to develop your child.
By about three or four your child may like it when you build an igloo of Tooties. It takes about 200 Tooties for a small igloo and is lots of fun. Upturn a wastebasket so you have a guide to make a perfect circle of about 18 inches in diameter. Add a second row of Tooties on top being sure to overlap the joints and with each row higher come in a little til the top of the igloo comes together. Hold the child's hands while she tries to sit on it to see if it supports her weight. If it should break that is a wonderful opportunity to do it again. Encourage the child to help you. Older children can even make doorways in the igloo. Another secret of Tooties is to have so many that you never run out whatever the child is building. Castles and forts are a favorite of older children and so is knocking them down.
About age three or four is a good time to add two Tootie Launcher, a Tootie Toss and a Tootie Bounce. The last two pieces of equipment could also be used as early as 18 months if parents are eager to play with their children. Tooties are designed to be self teaching so will keep the child busy even without the parent's active involvement. Tooties are a great baby sitter and when you have baby sitters they should be encouraged to play Tooties with your child. After age 12 Set 7c is your best buy.
This is just a brief introduction into the fabulous world of Tooties. Write or call for more information and order as many Tooties as you can afford as soon as possible. You will be delighted. Many hundreds of pages have been written about Tooties and their many uses. Even astronauts have used Tooties to maintain their muscle strength in space.
How to Order? Just decide on how many of which sets you would like and send a check or money order for total plus $19 for shipping anywhere in contiguous U.S. Californians should add sales tax. Let us know if it is OK to include some free bonus Tooties.

Summary: How Tooties may be used effectively to enhance physical education with handicapped children of all ages.
Adapted Physical Education using Tooties for even better results.
Movement is the secret of learning. Just watch puppies or kittens playing. It is essential so that their brain learns to control their muscles and the muscles become strong. So it is vital in the field of Adapted Physical Education to come up with ways to move for the exceptional individual. Linda Simpson of Santa Barbara was among the best at helping these kinds of children and her favorite tools included Tooties and Tootie Things.
The goal is to permit as much freedom as possible in a safe manner. Tooties are soft, fun to touch, and just the perfect shape and weight to handle. It takes about three years to develop a new Tootie and now hundreds of different types and sizes are available to fill any need. Over the past 38 years we own a lot of appreciation to the many PE teachers who have made suggestions to improve Tooties and Tootie Things. You can try to make your own but soon will realize that the children still prefer Tooties and that Tooties give the best results so why tinker with success. Just order as many Tooties as you can. They come is cartons of 72 with lovely assorted colors. Later add a Tootie Thing or two.
Have children make a road by placing Tooties end to end and then walking on them for balance. Sometimes you need to make two parallel roads about six inches apart for those who have trouble balancing on one road. For children in wheelchairs have them build a crisscross Tootie Tower and then knock it down. Knocking it down is often more fun than building. Tie some Tooties in a cloth bag and hang as a pendulum. When the child releases the pendulum hopefully it will knock down the tower built on the floor. Have a child lie on mat and then be buried with Tooties by the other children. Then take turns. It is so much fun bursting out of that pile of Tooties.
Later put a wastebasket upside down on the carpet and make a circle of Tooties around the base. Make lots of circles around the room. Some may be able to jump from one circle to the next or even hop. Others may crawl from circle to circle.
Place a second layer of Tooties on a circle and continue with more layers but making the circle smaller each time. Soon you will have an igloo. Carefully hold the child while he or she sits on the igloo. If it holds congratulate them. If it collapses, laugh and build it again. See how far children can throw, both over hand and under hand. The secret is to have at least a dozen Tooties so they can see where they land compared to the others. Ask them to throw underhand into a bucket. Use up all the Tooties before retrieving any. This is vitally important so the child can see his or her successes and errors. At least two dozen Tooties should be used.
All children should do weight lifting to strengthen their muscles. Tooties are one third of a pound each, about as much as a baseball, but they don't hurt. Once they can lift one in a cloth bag, try two and then three etc. Tooties don't hurt even when they fall on bare toes, not even the ten pound Tootie Babies. We like to start normal babies on weight training as early as about a year. The beauty of Tooties is in their softness and tactile sensation.
Be sure to try out the different types of Tooties so children can learn to discriminate by weight and feeling. This stimulates their brain. Be creative, try all kinds of ways to use Tooties and let us know so we can share your ideas with other teachers. Linda Simpson invented the very useful Tower on Head exercise. You make a tower on their head and they knock if off when you finish. Soon they will be making towers on their head and walking around the room. Besides being very soft, safe to chew on and fun to touch, Tooties are washable and sterilizable. Actually we have had wonderful Tooties, still in active use, that have never been washed for 20 years. We recommend not washing as it removes the special oils that make the fabric softer. But if Tooties fall in the mud, get chewed on or get slobbered over, by all means hand wash, dry them with a towel and hang up to dry. If in a hurry put them in a 200 degree F. oven for about 30 minutes or more but not in a microwave. Hot Tooties can be a lot of fun and are used by therapists.
Tootie Things
Tootie Toss: The principal items consist of the Tootie Toss, Tootie Launcher and Tootie Bounce. The Tootie Toss is a very strong, light aluminum frame 28 by 32 inches. It supports a very tight polyester net so that when Tooties hit the net the return is quite fast but can be very gentle depending on the thrower. The size of the holes in the net is critical to getting good results. The Tootie Toss has four legs so that it can be used at a gentle angle or turned upside down for a steeper angle. The legs fold in quickly so it can be folded flat for storage or to be carried. Many itinerant teachers take them from school to school. Very little children can sit very close in front of the Tootie Toss and throw. Normally you should not tell the child to catch but congratulate them when they do. Check out Web Site for more ideas: www.Tooties.com.
For children in wheel chairs you can prop up the bottom of the Tootie Toss on a box to get the correct angle so it comes back into the lap of the thrower. Don't pick up the Tooties until at least a dozen have been thrown.
Tootie Launcher: This is perhaps our most useful Tootie Thing but children tend to like the Tootie Toss better so when possible you should hide the Tootie Toss until they really enjoy the Launcher. It is a very strong board about 30" long and 6" wide with a pivot about one third of the way. It took many years to develop so if you try to build it be sure to copy it exactly and even then it may not work as well as ours. One or more Tooties are put on one end and child jumps or stomps on the other end. They can even drop a ten pound Tootie Baby on the other end to make the Tooties shoot up into the air. We even make a Teeny Tootie Launcher and Teeny Tooties for children in wheelchairs.
Tootie Bounce: This is a very strong and light aluminum frame that supports a very tight net. It may be used like a Tootie Toss with two children sitting Indian style and facing each other. Its principal use is to bounce Tooties vertically and when there is safe space the Tooties can be bounced very high. It's a great cardiovascular exercise. In the beginning you might bounce round balloons blown to different sizes. Then try putting a little water inside before the balloon is blown up. Be creative and share your ideas.
Economics 101: Tooties are more expensive than less useful materials but the benefits are fantastic. If money is tight, as in many schools, appeal to the PTA or a local service club like Rotary. Otherwise, just buy as many dozen as the school can afford and add more Tooties when you can. The best results possible are when parents have their own Tooties at home and follow the recommendations of the teachers. Working together is the secret. Consider the case of Alex in Austria. He was born brain damaged, could hardly walk or see and could only say a few words as well as many other serious problems. The specialists over there said he was hopeless and should be put into an institution but the mother never gave up hope. Tooties changed her life and improved her son tremendously. See www.Tooties.com for details.
Tooties Kit # 2: Many schools around the country are equipped with this kit which includes a carton of 72 colorful Tooties, six Tootie Tosses and six Tootie Launchers. Search for them as they often end up in a closet when an enthusiastic teacher retires. A new kit is only $1969, serves the whole school, lasts for many years, is lots of fun and delivers great results.

Tootie Help for Parents Summary:
Suggestions for helping your child, with and without Tooties or our teaching services.
Tootie Help for Parents
Thanks for asking for our help for yourself or your children. We at the Brain Development Center are proud we are the best in the world at what we do and our research helps us become even better. Thru our Creative Ideas Company we manufacture and distribute highly advanced, psychological learning materials all over the world. Since 1962 when Tooties were first offered for sale, millions of children have benefited in schools, homes, eye care centers, hospitals and other institutions. Even tho Tooties have been around for a long time you may not have heard of them. We call that condition "quindrexia" which is the state of not knowing what you don't know. The more one becomes educated the more we find out what we don't know. None of us can know everything so we have to be selective and learn how to find those who are experts in what we want know about. This can be a very difficult task discriminating between those who really know and those who are not as knowledgeable. In order to discern properly you have to become somewhat of an expert yourself or find someone in whom you have complete confidence.
Our fields of expertise include learning problems, attention deficit, concentration, coordination, vision, speech, brain damage from birth or accidents, self-esteem and improving perfectly normal, sharp children in reading, math, science, confidence, motivation, etc.
We don't know everything but have a good record at finding those who know what we need and then using their services as appropriate. Thus when asking us to help your child we should know as much about your child as possible. Of course tell us about their problems but also what they can do and how well. We also need to know the history such as birth conditions and types of treatment along the way, by whom, and the results and cost of such treatment. Were the benefits worth the time and money? Has your child had a complete visual exam recently by a qualified behavioral optometrist, preferably by one who uses Tooties?
One of the reasons we are so successful, even for seemingly hopeless cases, is that we take the total picture into consideration and are willing to expend extraordinary effort when necessary. If interested, ask for some case histories. Because children are usually part of a family we need to know about each of the other siblings and the parents. Please include photographs of each and a brief summary about their strengths and weaknesses, etc. For the parents we need to know their level of education, both informal and formal and what types of work they are trained to do. How much time is available to help the child in question without neglecting the other children?
What types of other resources are available. It may sound silly but if we know you have or have access to a boat, horse, dog, home in the country, etc. it could help your child depending on what needs to be done. As an example if the father is a Rotarian, it opens doors more easily to find experts in other parts of the world. Are you willing to travel if that is useful? Money is also an essential ingredient. Not everyone has an unlimited supply of money or time so by knowing what is available we can use creativity to get results within the limits available. Most families are pretty dedicated to their children but a few make impractical comments such as "We would sell our house if it would help our child". This is a nice gesture but where would the family live after the child improves? Please feel free to discuss any of these items with us and send whatever information you can as soon as possible.

Summary: More useful info on how to help your children. Much more detailed than Tootie Help # 1.
Tootie Help for Parents, No. 2
We hope that you have read the first Tootie Help. If not, be sure to request it and send a self-addressed stamped envelope. Most parents want to help their children and a few do a really good job in the many areas required. Some just see that they are clean and neat, some emphasize good manners, some push sports, some take them to shopping malls and movies and some push outdoor activities like camping, etc. Many help with homework or at least push to see that it is done but not always in a way that is best for the child. Children need all of these things and much more in their education and the best time to help them is before they go to school and are exposed to outside influences. And finally some go to extremes using the TV as a baby sitter. It is the easy way out. Unfortunately when children are born they don't come with an owner's manual and by the time parents get used to how to handle a two year old they are now three and require different handling so parents tend to be behind.
Millions of children in the U.S. and around the world have used the Tooties system since 1962. Tooties and the related equipment are so much fun and intuitive to use that few read the instructions on how to get the best results.
Frustrated Parents: It is very common for parents to be frustrated with their child's school and teachers. All you have to do is think about your own past educational experiences and think of how many teachers that you had that were really good at motivating you to want to learn. Usually most are just average, just putting in their hours, and some are really bad like my second year high school Spanish teacher. Fortunately my first year Spanish teacher was marvelous and so was my third year. One of the things we teach students is how to do well even when you have a bad teacher like my college English teacher. Some can really turn you off in many ways and even cause students to skip school or drop out. Prevention is the secret.
Fantastic Results Quickly is Possible: Many parents are reluctant to send us their normal, bright kids who are doing well in school because they think they can't be improved. But all of a sudden the student who was doing so well could be having serious problems. Then in a panic they want us to rescue their kids. The best time to help kids is before they are teenagers but it can be done after that also, even adults, but more effort is required. One of the secrets of the Tooties system is to find the student's motivation switch or switches. Everyone has them but some are very hard to find. Did you ever have a teacher who was so much fun that you loved going to class and even doing all kinds of extra work. Suppose all your teachers had been like that. There are many fantastic teachers out there but finding them is the problem. They don't learn it at the university where most schools of education are pretty poor. The good teachers throw out all the garbage they learned at the university and develop their own techniques for what works with kids. Universities can be very useful but many students are just putting in their time to get past the poor teachers just to get a diploma.
Falling in Love: If this can happen very fast why not use those same switches to motivate kids to fall in love with learning. That's what the Tootie system really does. Students get so turned on they don't want to stop. This is why we never accept students for less than a three hour learning session. Most of those who use the half or one hour sessions are taking advantage of the students. This applies to psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, etc. also. It's a financial thing. It's easier to take money from parents when you do it gradually even if the results are quite poor.
Why is our Psychology so much Better? Maybe it is because we are more interested in results than in making money. It is not that we are any smarter but the focus is different. The traditional therapy session lasts about fifty minutes. It occurs on a time schedule which is not based on how you or the therapist feels at that time. Who can say that on Wednesdays at 3:pm you are ready to learn and if you do get turned on the bell rings, the session is over and all that energy is lost. Our approach is different in that the student is with us for the whole day or week, something like summer camp, where there are lots of fun things to do and we wait until the moment of learning is ready. Then in a short time we get much more done than if we had tried to start the teaching at 8:am.
How can We Get such Fantastic Results so Quickly? For us it's easy because we have had lots of experience but it does involve hard work on our part. One of the secrets is to be perceptive as to when the student is in the right mood to really learn. In a typical traditional therapy session the therapist forgets completely about the student until the following week and then only has five minutes to review the five minutes worth of notes he or she took at the last therapy session. With the Tooties system we switch back and forth from learning to having fun and while the student is having fun our teachers are thinking of what to do during the next learning session.
Movement is another of our Secrets: Children love to move, run, climb, etc. and so do all young animals. That's nature's way of developing the brain and body so they work well together. Imagine how a mother must feel when she is forced to put her child on Ritalin because they move too much. Dumb doctors have given it a name such as hyperactivity or attention deficit disorder syndrome so they can get paid for treating it. In recent years they have removed the word syndrome and call it a disease because now the insurance companies will pay more easily for treatment. Nobody really wants to help these kids but just make money on them and schools often force parents to put them on drugs. It's the easy way out. We can cure or dramatically improve almost any hyperactivity or ADDS problem in a few days and without drugs. We take a different approach and encourage lots of movement and then fold in math, reading and science in a fun way.
Swimming with Professionals: All of us are swimming in an ocean of incompetent or even crooked professionals. Look at all the crooked politicians, lawyers, judges and you get an idea on how bad the situation is. Then consider all the incompetent doctors, teachers, auto mechanics, psychologists, etc. No wonder parents get so frustrated in their search for help. There are good professionals out there but finding them is like trying to find a tiny island of competence in a vast ocean of incompetence.
What do Medical Doctors Know about Kids: Even pediatricians are pretty incompetent when it comes to helping healthy, normal kids. Most of their studies have been devoted to kids who are sick or dead. Most are so busy they don't even know their own kids. But when you ask their advice they will claim to be very knowledgeable. Who then knows the most about kids? Try to find a good teacher who has had her own kids and see what they are like. Those are the islands you need to look for. We have almost no confidence in child psychologists but don't let that stop you from looking. If you find a good one please be sure to tell us.
Secret Fights among Professionals: Do you know that medical doctors and surgical doctors can have entirely different points of view. They pretend to get along in front of patients but secretly they don't. Imagine how much better it would be if they were a team, each using their respective strengths. Another good example is the different points of view between optometrists and opthalmologists. One is highly trained in surgery but not much in glasses and the other is the opposite. When looking for good vision see an optometrist first unless there is disease or an accident. But not any optometrist as most just want to sell glasses. Look for a developmental or behavioral optometrist who understands how normal eyes should really work. Their focus is good vision and how almost everyone can benefit from vision training. Tooties are very effective for vision training and can be used at home. When looking for an optometrist don't look for the closest one but ask if they are members of OEP which is a professional group encouraging advanced and continuous training in visual development. Also ask if they use or know about Tooties. If you do get a vision exam please ask for a written report written in plain English and send us a copy. We have a list of all the OEP members worldwide and can offer suggestions on which might be the best for your kids.
Learning Lenses: This is a complex story but if you get learning lenses which are quite weak of about plus 0.50 and your child wears them only when they are doing near work such as reading then it is quite likely they won't need nearsighted glasses as they get older. Your developmental optometrist has written information he can give you. This prevention is very important so don't delay in understanding how this works.
Concentration: One talented doctor who was watch us teach made the comment that one of the secrets of the Tooties system is to teach concentration. We teach how to concentrate intensely for long periods of time without effort and to be able to turn it on and off quickly on demand. Thus you are able to relax most of the time but when needed you can quickly turn on your intense concentration to get the job done.
Attention Span: University schools of education tend to teach that children have the attention span of a housefly but with the Tooties system it is easy to increase the attention span to hours, even for young children. The secret is in how to do it. We do it all the time so it is easy for us. From what we have observed in many families is that short attention span is caused by parents or by whomever the care giver is. It is much easier to just give in to the child's instant whims. Of course parents don't realize that they are the cause of the problem and it would not be fair to blame them as they just didn't know they were doing it.
Save Money and Hire a Smart Young Girl to Teach: She could be any age but we find that from seven to twenty is a good range. The most important quality is that she is alive and responsive, someone who would make a good role model for your child. In Panama the dean of a university was concerned about all the students who hated math so in a few hours I changed them so that math was fun. The dean was worried as to who would teach them when I left or if any were to fall back so I offered to train a teacher in the Tooties system. I looked at his teachers and none were suitable, then I tried high school and couldn't find what I wanted. Finally a mother of a seven year old girl said I could use her little girl, who hardly knew that multiplication existed. She was alive and lots of fun to teach so in about six weeks she was teaching scientific calculators to the students as well as geometry, trig and some algebra. Of course she was very shallow in her knowledge of these subjects but she did a great job in motivating the university students to appreciate how much fun math can be when you have an exciting teacher. Most parents will have better luck with a high school girl and preferably one who knows how to touch type.
Surely you have heard the saying that a person who acts as his own lawyer has a fool for a client. In a similar way you can get much better results having a girl teach your kids instead of you. You can still teach but the girl can accomplish all kinds of things that your child would make it difficult for you to teach. She becomes a powerful intermediary. Now your teaching is done thru the girl and the results are much better.
How do you use such a Girl? Give her lots of freedom to have fun with your child and deviate from the lessons whenever she sees fit. Make sure she can devote at least three hours on the days she comes in. Besides her salary give her bonuses every now and then when she does something well. Borrow, rent or buy an electric typewriter, not a computer, and have the girl teach your child to touch type. Usually you can start by age four. By the judicious selection of practice words you can improve the child's vocabulary, spelling and reading without them realizing it. Make a list of the things you would like the girl to cover but give her the freedom to do it her way and when she thinks is best.
Should you buy Tooties? Of course, as that makes the teaching so much easier and more fun. Tooties were designed to appeal to all ages from infants to the elderly. It is just how you use them that changes. When done properly your kids will use Tooties in some way or another almost every day with the uses becoming more sophisticated as they get older. Tooties are designed to last for many years and might even be used by grandchildren. Should a Tootie ever fail for any reason we will replace them free for a small shipping and handling fee. There is no time limit and no receipts or proof of purchase is necessary. What better guarantee can you get? Have the girl read the directions and try out the various educational games on your child. If a girl can only come in once a week you may find it useful to hire a second girl to come in another day as you should have at least two such lessons a week. Temporarily you might have to give up some of the child's other activities. When you get ready to order some Tooties write or call for advice depending on the age and what you want to accomplish for your children. A good starting point is under a thousand dollars but if child is under six we would suggest splurging another couple thousand dollars as the benefits will be much greater. Should you hire us? Maybe, it depends on your finances. How much is your child worth? Would the price of a new car be worth it to rescue your child? Often, all you need is lots of Tooties and a good girl to be your child's friend and teacher. Maybe you can invite us in for a three hour session to evaluate and teach the girl. That's a very inexpensive way to go. Some people think we are very inexpensive because we get such good results quickly. After all, how much is your child worth. Many parents come to us after they have spent thirty to hundred thousand dollars and still haven't helped their child. One place you don't want to try is any of those hospital programs that advertise heavily. That is just a way to milk your insurance money and your child is often worse after 30 days with other troubled kids. Another program we have looked into which has grave weaknesses is the Tough Love program. While the originator may be able to get good results some chapters around the country are like the blind leading the blind. But check them out for yourself as maybe they have improved. Another good reason for not using us is that we don't accept insurance money. We don't want administrators sitting in an office telling us how to do our business. If you have anyone who is doing poorly in school or even failing from pre-school to college you need to take action quickly. Don't wait for Easter or X'mas holidays. .Send Details on your Child: Let us know about your concerns and what you have already tried. Summary: A brief article on how your child's grades, and or behavior may be improved dramatically in a week or two, including almost any learning disability or dyslexia. For all ages. We have great success with brain damage cases also. Don't give up.
Improve Almost Anyone Quickly with New Hi-Tech Psychology
We specialize in developing normal, sharp people's hidden talents and making them much better than they are. Imagine being able to study much more efficiently, read very fast while understanding better, get better grades, a better job, more money as well as becoming more popular. We can dramatically change people in a week or two but it may take them some time to fully integrate all the possibilities with their new personality.. We open the door and you take off to becoming more self-confident, more beautiful, ambitious and happier, etc. Almost any romantic problem can also be helped, especially if one contacts us early. It is fun showing a women how to find the man of her dreams who really loves her.
Even very serious problems and all ages can be treated with this system called QET for quick effective therapy, but most of our experience is in the range of ages six to forty. For instance a two year old dominating his mother with temper tantrums can be "cured" in just a few days. Some of the serious problems with which we have had amazing success include failing in school, not liking school, car accidents, hyperactivity, learning disabilities and brain damage from many causes including birth. One Air Force pilot thought he would never walk again after a jet crash and 7 years of treatment. Then a doctor who knew of our method and Tooties caused a miracle to happen.
Our new hi-tech psychological techniques invented by aerospace engineer John M. Hanson are not really new but have 25 years of proven experience to back them up. Millions have used the Tooties QET system around the world in schools, homes, and vision care centers, etc. However we are not without our critics. Some so-called educational experts say that learning disabilities are impossible to cure, that they can only be made less bad. We don't like to play games with words but these LD students become so well that they can teach others and show almost none of their LD tendencies. For instance a 19 year old girl in Sweden diagnosed as hopelessly hyperactive and brain damaged at age ten was so much improved that now she is studying medicine at the university. And it only took three weeks even though she was one of our most difficult cases. Our services are available worldwide.
How can we get such dramatic results so quickly? For serious cases the training must be done on a 24 hour per day basis for three to four weeks. Normal people can be improved in just a few days such as a long weekend but it is better if you have five full days. When possible it is a good idea to have a one or two day follow-up from time to time, at least for the first six months after training.
Two leading universities in Texas and New York have started to imitate our 24 hour therapy but unfortunately their results are not nearly as good as ours. One reason is that they use three different therapists in eight hour shifts so they lose continuity with the student and their therapists don't know how to use Tooties effectively. Tooties are very effective analytical tools that allow the therapist to look into one's brain and see how it processes information. Even more importantly the Tooties are self-teaching educational materials that at the same time you are being analyzed you are improving. It is really amazing how it works. One young lady was doing a Tootie exercise linked to a calculator and the next morning all her pimples were almost gone. She could hardly believe that a calculator and Tooties could be so effective. Actually it was not really the calculator or the Tooties but what was going on in her brain caused by the calculator and Tooties as well as some basics in dermatology. It sounds impossible but for those who don't like pimples and possible scars it is worth a try.

Tooties Learning Materials
"Learning by Doing" September 18, 1997
Dear
Thanks for calling, faxing or writing for info on Tooties. You probably have heard that Tooties are the best learning materials investment you can make for your schools. Millions of children have enjoyed and benefited from Tooties over the past 35 years all over the US and in many foreign countries.
Tooties are designed to be self-teaching and work well with all ages but you get better results with trained teachers. You can train your own teachers or invite us to provide in-service workshops. Tooties may be used in classrooms or multi-purpose rooms or even outdoors. Special classes such as learning disabilities, hyperactivity, attention deficits and poor reading can benefit very much. We have a special program for parents where we can dramatically improve almost any student in about 5 to 15 days from pre-school thru college. It is a little expensive but they save their child and are free from continued worrying as the child will do very well in school and later in life.
The Tooties materials are very durable and made to last for many years. In fact, the individual Tooties will be replaced free indefinitely should they ever get damaged for any reason with a modest shipping and handling charge. This is another reason to have lots of Tooties. High Schools and Universities can get by with Set 2 or 7c depending on the application and don't need as many Tooties. Send us more details on what you want to accomplish.
We have over a hundred different types and sizes of Tooties depending on the application and years of research have established several sets that work best for different applications in schools or homes. The best possible results occur when schools use Tooties and parents have their own small set 7c at home so kids can practice on their own.
Perceptual Motor Kit 2 - Only $1,969 plus $94 for shipping.
Consists of 6 Tootie Launchers, 6 Tootie Tosses and 6 dozen Tooties. Suitable for a whole school but may be used in one classroom at a time or split between two or more classrooms. Many schools use them also for physical education and special education. This is our best value.
Perceptual Motor Set 7c - Only $795 plus $28 for shipping.
Consists of 2 Tootie Launchers, one Tootie Toss, one Tootie Bounce and 32 Tooties of three types. Suitable for a classroom or teacher specialist such as psychologist, learning disabilities, math or reading, etc. Also great for homes and optometrists for vision training.
Perceptual Motor Set 1e - Only $798 plus $23 for shipping
Consists of a carton of six dozen Tooties of three or more types. Lower grades should have extra Tooties kept in the room. Studies indicate 6 to 10 cartons produces good results with either of the above sets but even one or two cartons is useful. When ordering more than two cartons ask for a quote on price.
These materials were developed by Dr. John Hanson, a former rocket scientist turned educator and psychologist. He is the inventor of QET (Quick Effective Therapy) where almost anyone can be dramatically improved in 5 to 15 days, even those with severe problems such as learning disabilities, hyperactivity, attention deficits, self-esteem, brain damage, dyslexia, anorexia and poor reading, math or science, etc. Have parents send details and photographs of any child they wish to improve for complete information.

Learning Disability Break Thru
Summary: All kinds of information on how almost any Learning Disability may be helped and usually very quickly. Also give some of our philosophy on teaching and how you can best utilize our materials and services. The potential is enormous.
Learning Disability Break Thru Including Hyperactivity, Adds, Dyslexia & Car Accidents, etc.
Summary: Almost anyone can be improved no matter how hopeless it seems providing you can find someone who knows what to do and has had lots of successful experience. The first step is to throw out your resistance to change and become a believer. It took medical doctors 50 years to accept that the stethoscope was better than putting their ear on the patient's chest. With the Tooties system students can dramatically improve grades in college or lower schools.
Resistance to Change
Many years ago Dr. John M. Hanson of the Brain Development Center near Los Angeles, and the inventor of Tooties used by millions around the world since 1969, discovered cures for learning disabilities, dyslexia, hyperactivity, reading problems, attention deficit disorders, lack of self-esteem, insecurity, shyness and a host of other problems. Thirty years have passed and many teachers, doctors and parents still have not seen the light. They are still clinging to the old fashioned ideas that a "cure" is impossible. Even if the word "cure" is changed to "improvement" it still raises suspicions. At the same time our teachers around the world continue to get good results fairly quickly, even on the most difficult of cases.
Why are people so resistant to change? People tend to avoid problems and changes bring new problems. Feelings are another kind of problem. No one wants to hurt another's feelings. When you show a mother how easy it is to solve a personal problem that has occupied her for years you can imagine how bad she feels. She has expended so much effort and dedication in trying to help her child she needs to be rewarded with some success and praise for all her hard work. To say that you have an easy solution is a terrific blow to her ego and makes her feel guilty that she wasted all those years. We would even be reluctant to tell her how we do it as it seems so silly to the uninitiated and would make her feel more guilty.
Before we try to explain why people are the way they are we need to say that there are many reasons why it is not good to change too quickly. Society would be a disaster if everyone changed all the time. We need a constancy in our lives but children should be taught early that some change is good and that they should keep their minds open. Unfortunately, most teaching is related to teaching things and not thinking.
This goes way back in history as to why we have education and the simple explanation is that land owners and factory owners needed workers able to do basic tasks and they don't want them to think but just do what they are told. Things have not changed much over the years as we still need workers but now with somewhat higher skills but nevertheless still workers. It has only been in recent years that universities teach students the skills required to open their own businesses. Unfortunately, the universities still are not very good at teaching thinking but hope that it is acquired in the process of learning complicated things.
Earthquakes
To try to explain why people are so resistant to change we need to give some examples of history and even some very current examples. A good example of present resistance is the earthquake problem. It would be very useful to know when an earthquake will occur so that lives and property can be saved. There is a man in New Mexico named Browning who has a proven track record in predicting earthquakes with an 80% accuracy. Because he is not 100% accurate many academicians don't give him much credit for his predictions. They attack him in all sorts of ways by saying he doesn't have any formal education in earthquake studies. It is another way of saying that he isn't a member of the club so therefore his work should not be recognized. He does have three degrees in other sciences and is a former test pilot so there is no doubt that he is well able to attack the tasks he has chosen. One doesn't even need to go to school to be the best at something but it helps if that person has the time. Usually they are too busy making progress. In the meantime those companies who do believe Dr. Browning's predictions are able to benefit enormously. Knowledge is power. How you use it is up to you. One of Dr. Browning's marvelous comments is that his goal is to satisfy his customers and not his critics. Too many people bow to the academicians. We applaud his internal fortitude.
School Superintendents
In Southern California it used to be and still is to some extent that no one could be a superintendent of a school district if they were not a graduate of USC. No matter how good you were nor how many other degrees you had, none were recognized unless you went to that particular university. In other words they held a monopoly on the schools here which inhibited new ideas from coming in from the outside. People who hold the monopolies here and in other parts of the world love them because it prevents changes that might threaten their way of doing things. Fortunately no one has a monopoly on thinking so never let yourself be intimidated.
Stealing Ideas
The Brain Development Center also holds a monopoly on being able to help anyone fairly quickly but we like to think that we are more open to new ideas than others and willing to share our ideas. We welcome ideas on how to cure learning problems, etc. even faster but if the ideas are too strange it would be normal for us to be reluctant also, at least in the beginning. The psychology departments of at least two leading universities have tried to steal our system but didn't bother to consult with us and now say that our system is not any good because they can't duplicate it. It is so easy to see the dumb mistakes even those well educated people make but why should we help them steal our ideas. Bubonic Plague Let's go way back in history to 1347 when the Black Plague started killing millions of people. It lasted about four years and killed about one third to one half of all the people in Europe. People died within about three days of getting sick and there were so many dead around that few people were interested in keeping records and like so much of history one has to be skeptical of what you read as most history is written after the fact and slanted to the view of the author or his superiors. Since rats had always been so common no one suspected rats or their fleas might have been the cause of the Black Death. So in desperation people tried all kinds of other cures, none of which were effective but how did they know since some people lived. Why do some children have learning problems and others not? We think that we have a good idea as to how it happens. Many people believe such problems are inherited in the genes but our research indicates that relatively little comes from the genes. The same is true of nearsightedness but it is so difficult to convince people that it is preventable in most cases. Selling eyeglasses is a billion dollar business so why change. For the best in vision care ask us for a list of behavioral or functional eye doctors in your area or country.
Unseen Dangers
Until the invention of the microscope by a Dutch scientist it was impossible to know that in perfectly clear water could be very dangerous bacteria. Even when we know what causes Cholera and how to prevent it people still die regularly from this very painful death. Fortunately it is rare in the U.S. and the more civilized countries but in these days of rapid airplane flights and poor immigration policies it could happen at any moment. In the 1800s England was quite civilized and yet there were serious epidemics of cholera until London built a very extensive and expensive sewer system.
In the early 1900s the experts thot that malaria was caused by bad air so houses were built on stilts to get them out of the mist that covers the ground in the early morning. In hospitals in Panama during the building of the Panama Canal they used to put the feet of the beds in cups of water to keep the ants from crawling up on the beds. That water was a perfect breeding ground for malaria and yellow fever mosquitoes. It was so hard to convince the authorities to get rid of the cups because the ants were a more visible problem than the mosquitoes and not many people believed that tiny bugs in the saliva of the mosquito could cause something so bad as malaria and yellow fever. Imagine how hard it was for those who believed that they had such a simple cure to convince the authorities. Learning problems, etc. are just as frustrating for parents. Teachers are not as interested in solving the problem as it provides good jobs. Doctors and pharmaceutical companies are not very interested in changing things because it makes money for them in supplying Ritalin and other medical services like brain scans.
Fear of Criticism
Even when a fantastic medical cure is invented it is often held back by the inventor because if he publishes it then he is subject to criticism by his peers. A good example is Dr. Janetta. (not sure of name) He invented a very simple permanent cure for a very serious, painful malady for which there had been no cure. The ailment is Trigeminal Neuralgia and the pain it causes on the side of one's face is terrible. Some of the treatments have been very strong drugs that almost killed you in the process. Another treatment was cutting the nerves to that part of the face which wasn't very satisfactory either. What Dr. Janetta discovered was that the cause was pressure on the nerve in the brain as a person gets older and a blood vessel expands. In a very simple procedure he makes a tiny cut into the brain from behind the ear and puts a tiny silicone sponge between the nerve and the offending blood vessel. Imagine all the people condemned to suffer because he was afraid to make his discovery public for many years. He was afraid his critics would say it is too simple or that it would not last.
How we do it
Our treatment of any learning disability, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity is also relatively simple but it does involve very heavy, intensive Tooties therapy for up to about 30 days or less in most cases. It is extremely hard work for the therapist and is very difficult to teach to others, especially those not willing to work very hard. On the surface it is hard to believe that what we do will be useful because it is so indirect and seems so simple. Those who try to copy our system give up too soon as it seems boring to untrained observers.
Intense Concentration
One of the things that we do is to teach the student to concentrate intensely for long periods of time without effort and then to turn it off and relax. Once they can do that the rest of their development is relatively a pleasure to teach as we see them beaming with excitement at their progress. The Tootie Launcher is one of our most effective tools for this objective along with the Tootie weighing exercise even tho neither looks very impressive on the surface.
In a way it is like taking the student to a summer camp where all the distractions of friends, family and the school are not present. Most parents ask if it will last when the student returns to their normal environment and yes it does last but sometimes a five day follow-up is recommended after a month or two in their normal environment. Usually we offer suggestions to parents and the student's teacher which we hope they will follow. If a disruptive, poor student returns to a school where everyone knows how dumb they were it is hard for them to accept the student as a brand new smart person. Therefore the ideal would be to enroll the student in a new school and not let his or her records follow them as the new teachers will treat them as the records indicate. That's a normal, human condition because people don't believe that anyone can change so quickly. Parents tend to find all kinds of excuses as to why they can't change schools and to insure that the student's record does not follow them.
Costs
Our fee schedule is very simple so you know in advance. It includes everything such as teaching, learning materials, hotels, food, car rentals, etc. except air fare. Fees are payable in advance and no insurance is accepted. We charge a five day minimum plus a three day cushion in case we have to go longer. During the preliminary consultation and evaluation we can determine how long the treatment is expected to take. There is a $300 fee for the initial consultation. Our fees are on a sliding scale downward as our task usually gets easier with time and it saves you money. If money is a big concern we suggest you start with one of our teachers who can do most of the teaching at a much lower rate than the director even tho they might take longer and can handle only the relatively simple cases. Our lowest cost is a "do it yourself" by buying Tooties Set 7c and following the manual. Great for all kids of any age.
Conclusion
If you don't believe us, don't use our services as we don't have time to convince you. One principal of a private school for problem children was so arrogant we didn't try to convince him. Instead, we felt sorry for his wonderful boy of nine whom we could have easily helped even tho he was considered one of the worst. We had evaluated the boy in about one hour with our Tooties techniques and found he had all kinds of possibilities. The fact that we can cure or improve almost anyone does not mean that we have the time to do it. Unfortunately we must be selective as to which cases we accept. To do our job well we must have complete flexibility.
We have many more examples but don't want to burden you. If you are really serious about helping your child and can afford our services then we suggest you call some of our references but you must write first and ask if you may call. Be sure to explain in detail your child's problems and personal data as well as details and costs of the treatments you have tried and the results if any. Be sure to send a copy to us at the address below.
Handicapped People and Electro Shock Therapy
Normally we don't do handicapped children any more as they are too easy and others can help them less expensively but since we were the best we can offer useful suggestions. Learning disabilities, etc. are more of a challenge as the problems are not as obvious. Just be aware that even in the most hopeless of cases such as car accidents that some things can be done and that could lead to further improvements. We have had lots of success in even the most impossible cases so why not tell us about your problem. Just because many experts say it is impossible does not mean that it is so. Some psychiatrists refer to us their most difficult cases and so far we have been very successful. Imagine a 63 year old woman, a former professor, undergoing eight years of electro shock therapy once a month and still did not improve. We got dramatic results in a very short time. In another case a girl of 14 was badly injured in a car accident that killed her mother. For seven years she was like a vegetable and locked up in her room except for visits to the psychiatrists who had her on very heavy medication. In three weeks of Tooties therapy she had recovered almost completely and was a delight to teach. We don't know how she is years later as the father did not follow our advice to send her in for a follow-up but I heard thru our psychologist in her city that she has a job and is doing fairly well. Our phones and fax are not listed so you must write first with details about your problem.
Warning
Whatever you do, don't use the hospital services that are highly advertised on TV. It's a scheme to milk the insurance companies of about 30 to $50,000 and your child comes out worse. Imagine the bad influence of having your child in an incompetent program for 30 days with 50 similar kids. It is not only bad for your child but is a complete waste of money. Caveat Emptor!

Learning Disability Booklet 7c:
Summary: Prepared for national convention in Minneapolis and is very thoro in detail. Useful info for normal children as well. Heavy emphasis is placed on the importance of vision training and finding an Optometrist who uses Tooties.
LD Book7c on C-4 840206 REV 3/28/86
Preface
We believe that optometrists are a vital link in helping solve learning disabilities by treating visually related problems and would like to enlist their talents. In addition to helping many people we hope to show that it can be very rewarding in self-satisfaction and financially. It is more effective to teach the importance of psychology and education to optometrists than to teach psychologists and teachers how to be optometrists. We feel that optometrists will benefit from exposing these professionals to enough about the fundamentals of vision functioning so that they can spot potential visual problems and refer them to you.
A psychomotor program called Tooties, used by millions of children in schools worldwide, could be the common bond as Tooties are also effective in optometric visual training thus opening the doors for optometrists to work with the schools. This means catching many visual problems before they get severe and bringing in lots of patients who need help.
Some parts of the program can be delicate since the very things that turn some doctors on may turn others off. Even our own educational part is quite delicate because when we can "cure" children's problems so quickly it reflects badly on some teachers, psychiatrists and psychologists and may cause some to think that their job is in jeopardy. With the help of an optometrist, Dr. Leon Lipkis, O.D. of Los Angeles, who really believes in and uses Tooties regularly, we were able to help Vicki, a 23 year old "dyslexic" who could not read and who had not been helped much after seven months of twice weekly visits to an optometry college clinic.
If you need advice on helping a particular student, write to us or call us at (310) 643-9882 (7 - 9 AM California time is best) but always follow up with a letter. Leaving a message on our answering machine is not always sufficient. If you want to avoid the answering machine, use (310) 643-8775 or fax at (310) 643-8559. If the parents chose to write directly, ask them to include complete details on the patient in their first letter and a picture of family with names and ages of each member.
Before you read too far let us warn you up front that we really don't know for sure why our methods produce such fantastic results quickly. We have been searching for answers for over 23 years but the magic of why it works is elusive. This bothers some educators and psychologists who think many of our techniques are quite unrelated even though the children love them. Someday we will discover the reasons but in the meantime we just keep on getting good results. In most cases we attack the problem in a very unusual, unorthodox, indirect manner playing by ear so to speak. It is very difficult to teach this concept to others but we think that optometrists are the most likely professionals to be able to capture these delicate threads or nuances and put them to effective use. To speed up the learning process, especially if serious vision problems are evident, we often bypass the sight input part of the sensory system and work the student with their eyes closed. Then, when they improve their brain process functioning, they can be referred to an optometrist for testing and visual training (VT) as appropriate. We prefer to have an OD thoroughly examine the eyes and vision prior to our work but unfortunately there isn't always time since most of our clients are almost completely improved in a week. With the psychological part done the child will do even better on his VT which is still very vital to the child's continued improvement.
Teachers really want to be good but unfortunately too often they are not as well prepared for this phase of teaching as they might be. Our goal is to help teachers understand the importance of vision. Optometrists should feel good about their valuable contribution to patients and society and be well paid for it. When well paid you can afford to be generous and help others who cannot afford care such as certain parents or even your local school district. For our part we are willing to donate up to a month, when required, to visit your area and help your study group of optometrists and assistants become as proficient as possible in helping lots of people and be financially rewarded at the same time. Because so many schools already use Tooties we have the magic key that opens the doors to almost any school district so that you and they can work together. Over the past 23 years the use of Tooties has proven very valuable for helping children to improve reading, math and vision and we owe much of our success to the wonderful optometrists who pioneered in the use of our materials when they were new and not as popular. Now we can afford to be even more generous with you and your staff to insure you are getting the most from your investment of time and money. We are most interested in helping the adventurous doctors who lead the way for the others in your exciting profession.
Columbia University and the University of Texas have now adopted 24 hour psychological therapy techniques similar to the ones Dr. John Hanson pioneered many years ago which adds even more credibility to our program. We are eager to help anyone expand into this field of improving people so quickly. Optometry is a vital ingredient.
Learning Disabilities Helped by Optometry
by John M. Hanson, PhD, Director Brain Development Center Tooties, California 90250
No profession is better qualified to help students with visual problems that contribute to learning disabilities than optometry, especially those who are members of OEP and COVD. Parents are willing to spend all kinds of money to help their children and yet so many optometrists, well qualified technically, have few practical ideas on how to tap this enormous potential. Teachers need to be trained on how to identify visual problems and refer students needing visual care to you. The purpose of this booklet is to show you how easy it is. Naturally you will make money, and so will we, but our main goal is to help the millions of children who need help desperately. No one is better qualified than you for teaching children how to develop and use their vision effectively. Then we can help you with the psychological and educational components. Together we will make a terrific team.
Some people think that teachers are well qualified to help students with learning disabilities but the sad fact is that too many are not. However they could be much better if they knew how to use Tooties properly. First, the colleges of education that teach teachers are not doing as good a job as they could or should. Ask any teacher which courses were the worst and the reply will usually be that most were in education. Instead, education courses should be the best with the most exciting professors. There are many good teachers in schools but ask them how they got that way and they will usually tell you that they threw out many of the things they learned in the school of education and on their own learned to do what worked in the classroom. Think back about how many poor teachers you had in school and college. Do you realize that it only takes one bad teacher to ruin a child's yearning for learning for life? Often the parents have absolutely no control over the fact that just such a teacher is their child's teacher. Suppose you loved math in high school but in college you had a terrible algebra or calculus teacher who turned you off thereby ruining your opportunity to become an optometrist. Entirely possible. We have seen it happen in similar situations over and over again. We specialize in solving these types of problems quickly. Almost any failure or setback can be reversed to bring success when you know how. Some just seem impossible. We can take almost any student who is doing poorly in college or high school (even elementary school) and dramatically improve them in 5 to 10 fun filled, full time days. Even more satisfying and useful is helping to improve a normal student who seems to be at capacity or nearly perfect.
Schools of Education
One of the problems with the schools of education is that they spend far too much time studying the history of education and hardly any time on how children learn. We travel around the world looking for the best teachers and in the field of optometry there are and have been many greats such as Skeffington, Getman, Hendrickson, Fleming, Barstow, Kadet, Kraskin, Streff, Apell, and Schrock, etc. One of the greatest teachers is Professor Les Nason, Ed.D, formerly of the USC School of Education. Every optometrist, parent and student should order his book. More than half a million copies have been sold. The title is "You Can Get Better Grades" by Les and Fran Nason. Only $15 ppd. from Creative Ideas. Professor Nason can do miracles with almost any student and yet his great ideas are still not accepted in the university schools of education because they are considered too simple. Actually there is much more to the story. Another great book that we sell is Dr. Jerry Getman's "How to Develop Your Child's Intelligence". Only $17 ppd. When Dr. Getman wrote this book he was way ahead of his time and he still is. He's terrific. For parents of children from birth to age 3 we recommend "Playful Parenting" by Graselli and Hegner for only $19 ppd.
Teachers
Millions of children use Tooties in schools all over the nation so we have had the opportunity to find out who many of the really good teachers are and of course the not so good, and what they can do with children. We love helping teachers become even better than they are. Of course it is unfair to put all the blame on teachers. Most of the blame should be on parents for not adequately preparing their children in the years before they go to school. It is a difficult job being a parent with so much to learn and few good parenting schools, and even fewer attending them. With Tooties parents can learn on their own and raise better children. Many parents are to blame for not working closely with the school to help their child find the good teachers. When this is not possible they should teach their children how to learn on their own in spite of a poor teacher. Parents are also to blame for being quindretic (not knowing what they don't know) about the importance of vision. That is, they don't know that they don't know much about vision so how can they take any positive action? The AOA seems to be trying its best to inform parents but we think there is much more to do. We would love to offer some suggestions and still avoid the controversy with medical doctors.
Visual Training
In the eyes of many parents traditional optometric visual training (VT) is costly, time consuming and often does not achieve the desired results. Parents are often at fault by not encouraging students to practice at home. With Hanson's Motivation Techniques the student will enthusiastically practice in spite of the parents' apathy. With the Tooties System and Hanson's Motivation Techniques your years of superior technical training can pay off. Unfortunately colleges usually do not teach us how to make money nor how to think but tend to overwhelm us with facts and figures so that we can work for someone else who makes the money. The good news is that a number of colleges now offer entrepreneur courses.
One of our secrets to success is to make the parents really want to become involved in their child's VT and to participate in the training along with the rest of the family. The activities prescribed will make everyone aware of and concerned with the importance of vision and the fact that their vision while improving is not as good as it should and could be. As a result of this new knowledge they often urge their friends to seek your vision care.
Learning Lenses
We believe in the use of learning lenses. We are sure that you believe in their value also, to relieve the stress of prolonged near point seeing, enhance visual information processing, and help prevent maladaptations, i.e., visual and eye problems. But too often lenses alone do not solve learning related visual problems or learning problems per se. Parents of successful children are your best source for referrals. Parents love to use Tooties at home and thus become even closer to their children as each tries to improve their vision functioning, tracking and eye-hand skills on the Tootie Toss, Tootie Launcher and Tootie Bounce. These aids are designed to do much more than just improve vision. When only used in optometric offices for short periods of time many of the possible benefits are lost. For frequent and prolonged fun-filled as well as learning enhanced times it is essential that every patient also have Tooties Set #7c or #4 available for home use. It is better if they buy it but it would also be easy to have several sets available for loan or rental for parents who cannot afford to buy their own. The child needs many hours of individual practice and at times should invite in siblings, friends and relatives but preferably no more than three children at once to avoid having to take turns. Taking turns, while very sociable, can be very distractible and detrimental to the learning process.
Expand Your Horizons
Dr. Hanson has traveled all over the country visiting optometric offices and attending conventions in order to personally meet many of over 700 optometrists who use Tooties. He welcomes the opportunity and an invitation to do an all day training session with your assistants. Some optometrists know how to make VT financially rewarding as well as realizing its importance to children but many adults could also benefit from VT. Using Tooties at home with their children is a non-threatening way for parents to discover the benefits of VT and tell others about your services.
Office Executed Visual Training
In the past, in-office VT was the only effective means of getting good results because neither parents nor children were likely to follow-up on the out-of-office (home) practice suggested. In the office environment the doctor has complete control and can often delegate much of the work to a skilled assistant. This procedure, while effective, is expensive from the parent's point of view and is very time consuming when you consider the number of hours used in bringing the child to and from each session. Because results are not readily visible to the parent or child they begin to have doubts about the value of the program and when they have doubts the program is bound to lose effectiveness. For doctors who believe that in-office VT is the only way to go let us suggest that by adding out-of-office use of Tooties the child will be more motivated to practice and the parent is more likely to see results and want to tell other parents about your effective program. Naturally you need to indoctrinate both child and parent in the proper use of the Tooties and encourage parents and other members of the family to enjoy the Tooties as well. In this case you enlist the aid of the patient and/or his parents to be one of your teachers so that he can learn to spot visual problems in others and you might get even more referrals.
Office Directed Visual Training
We feel that the use of Tooties opens the door to a much wider practice of VT without necessarily increasing the size of your staff if you are willing to try the technique of "office directed but home executed" VT. Tooties are designed to be self-teaching and are irresistible to children if you keep the training a "fun" system. Even after the first session with the child it is effective to let him take a Tootie Launcher home to practice. Soon he will want his parents to buy a set, which is highly recommended because the Tooties are so much fun with all ages, even at adult parties. And each time the Tooties are used they teach others about the importance of vision, your program and the importance of really learning to use vision effectively even for people without any apparent problems. In other words almost everybody could benefit by some VT. Your most potent source for referrals are lots of satisfied and enthusiastic patients who continue to use Tooties at home and tell others about the importance of VT.
Some Specific Advice about using Tooties
It takes time to learn how normal people react with Tooties. Encourage your staff to take the Tootie equipment home on weekends to try on themselves and the neighborhood's normal children and adults. You should do it also. It's lots of fun and you will become much better at using Tooties in the office where time is money.
Tootie Launcher
Even though the Tootie Toss captures people's imagination the quickest it is very important to always introduce the Tootie Launcher first if you have the time. Don't even let them see the Toss. The Launcher is by far one of our most effective tools in developing the brain and the visual system. One of the secrets is not to teach them to catch but to set up the proper condition for them to learn how on their own. This gives lots of useful practice to the visual system and the brain as well. If you show the child how to catch, he does become a good catcher quickly but you have lost the advantage of his learning to learn and exercising his vision and brain to the maximum available. In observing the visual system via the use of Tooties you will also see that much of a child's problem is how the brain is interpreting the visual stimuli and that the brain itself is where we need to place some emphasis. Start out by asking the patient to place a Tootie on the end of the Launcher and jump on the other end. Observe if they use one or both feet and how effectively. Don't criticize or correct them if they place it on the wrong end but welcome that as an opportunity to observe how their listening, visualizing and thinking is working. If they jump or stomp on the wrong end and nothing happens, praise them for making a good jump and ask them to do it again. See how many times it takes before they start thinking and place the Tootie at the correct end. Don't congratulate them then but wait till the Tootie flies in the air and then praise them. This is the positive reinforcement or feedback they need and will lead to more trying. Observe if they make any attempt to catch and if they use inappropriate amounts of force by launching too hard or too soft. How long does it take them to figure out the correct force and are they reasonably consistent once they have discovered the correct force? Notice which foot they used. Later ask them to try the other foot and see how they adjust. It should improve fairly quickly even though they may still prefer the first foot.
When they finally catch a Tootie tell them to put another color Tootie on the end of the launcher and put the Tootie they just caught in front of the new Tootie (closer to them). Now with two Tooties they have to learn the correct force all over again besides keeping track of two objects moving in the air. When both are caught they continue with 3, then 4 up to a possible 22 Tooties at once. Normally an average child will be able to catch his age in Tooties. "That's great, do it again" is an appropriate comment for almost anything they do and does not give away any information that they should be gathering from the stimuli presented. When a child is catching well with either right or left hand you may want to add the use of prisms. The possibilities are lateral prisms, ie. bases out or in, and bases left or right yoked and vertical, ie. bases up or down yoked. Dr. William Nielson, O.D., in Seattle devised some very effective techniques using prisms. Read the manual on the Tootie Launcher for more specific details as there are all kinds of great uses for this device. Allow the child to invent his own games at home besides practicing the specific procedures you will be recommending.
Should the parents decide to purchase a Launcher for home use, even though you might temporarily loan them one, it is important that they get at least Set #3 which consists of two launchers and two dozen Tooties. Taking turns is very ineffective for two or more children so with two launchers the patient can invite a friend over to practice together. It makes it much more fun, it challenges, it is much better for the patient and opens the door for even more referrals. Actually the parents should order Set #4 which is the same as #3 but includes the vital Tootie Toss and saves money in the long run. Set #7c is even better as it includes a Tootie Bounce. Optometrists who wish to stock three or more sets are entitled to a 30% discount. This will be a service so that parents can get started immediately instead of ordering from us.
Tootie Toss
The same philosophy of teaching described above applies to the use of the Tootie Toss. Don't tell the child to catch. Have him stand, kneel or sit about five feet in front of the Toss and throw overhand at the net. Watch to see if they can predict the outcome and trajectory and if they use appropriate force. How long after they start catching successfully does it take them to learn that the most effective way to catch is with the fingers of the hand pointed toward the ceiling and not toward the net? When successful with the dominant hand allow them to try the other until they are successful again. When they can throw and catch consistently Dr. Lipkis recommends adding a metronome to make their performance even more efficient by throwing on every beat or every other beat, etc. You or your assistant should be positioned so that you can look directly at their eyes since it is important when using any of our VT devices to monitor where the patient looks. We feel it is better not to suggest that the child track the Tootie but let it happen on its own with lots of practice at home. If you make him aware of his loss of fixation and attempt to improve his tracking directly you will be successful but the child is not as likely to internalize the process. So please let him learn on his own with the Tooties at home and you monitor his progress at the office to get better results and save the parents money. Please give lots of genuine praise at the right time as well as placing a Tootie Sticker on their chest for each success. A supply is furnished with each Tooties Set.
Tootie Bounce & Different Kinds of Tooties
We have many other Tootie devices for brain development but only a few more that are really useful for VT. The most valuable is the Tootie Bounce which is for bilateral training. It is a smaller net that is held horizontally between both hands and the Tootie is bounced in the middle. Its use can be easy or difficult depending on which kind of Tootie is used. Tooties are available in different sizes, weights and internal textures. Some are large and heavy, some are large and light, and some are small and heavy, etc. The mismatch of visual size and feel or weight teaches computing of differences and how to compensate with appropriate movements. The Tootie Bounce may be ordered as Set 6c which includes four Tooties. After your Tooties program is running well we recommend ordering Set 1g which is a carton of 72 Tooties of three different weights. Remind us and we will substitute some of the more expensive, different weight Tooties at no extra cost so you can evaluate them with your patients. They are the same size but vary in weight, feeling and bouncing characteristics as well as being more difficult to catch. Remember our goal is to help people, through optometrists, and the use of Tooties to eliminate visually-related learning disabilities. We propose to show you how easy it is to help learning disabilities when you have Tooties and couple them with a good VT program. Office-directed but home-executed VT programs now become practical and profitable.
Tootie Squirter
Another device that is extremely popular and effective for visual and brain development is the Tootie Squirter. We sold thousands to many optometrists but once we filled the need the orders slowed down and we discontinued production. Someday we may start up again when there is enough demand. So, all optometrists who have Tootie Squirters, be sure you take good care of them and don't loan them out. The Tootie Squirter is a hand held device that when you squeeze the handle, a Teeny Tootie jumps out of its hammock-like bed into the air and does a somersault. The trick is to use your vision, hand, timing and brain to get the Teenie Tootie to land back in its bed and catch it at that moment by releasing the squeeze on the handle at just the right time. Normal six year olds can learn to do it a hundred times consecutively. It is very exciting and self-rewarding. As with other Tootie devices either one or both eyes may be occluded.
How Can Brain Development Center Help You?
There are many ways we can help you but one is via our ads in national media that urge parents to get visual checkups for their children at optometrists qualified to use Tooties. If we know you use Tooties, we can recommend they see you directly but we usually have them call all the optometrists near them to see which use Tooties. It helps when your assistant can say, "Yes, of course we use Tooties." Again our purpose is not to force you to use Tooties but for you to be aware of how useful they are. After an initial visual examination all that may be necessary is for you to suggest various activities to be performed at home with Tooties and that you provide follow-up in the event that they need additional help. Even optometrists who do not do VT should know about Tooties and have at least Set 7c or 4, even if only for use in their own home.
Another way in which we can help is via the schools. Millions of children have used Tooties in schools all over the nation in the past 23 years. Las Vegas, Nevada with about 60 elementary schools spends over a million dollars a year on their Tooties program. The school district in San Antonio, Texas has excellent video movies of Tooties in use. Teachers are delighted with the excellent results that can be obtained. When we visit schools, from elementary to college, we see lots of students who need help with their vision. They may be able to see clearly but it is the control and functioning of their vision that leaves something to be desired. Send us the name and address of your local school district so that we can send some literature. If possible, give us the name of a dynamic teacher or administrator who is in search of excellence and not afraid to try new things. If a school doesn't have Tooties, let us know. Don't worry about money. Tooties are so fantastic they will usually find the money no matter how desperate they seem to be. Parents will often chip in to get Tooties for their child's class. Service clubs might be willing to purchase Tooties for the school district. When they start with Tooties we expose them to the importance of vision and the need to bring in a vision consultant (an optometrist) to teach the teachers how to look for possible visual problems that interfere with learning.
If possible, we might even get the school nurse on your side if she is still not stuck on the Snellen chart at 20 feet. Ask the AOA or OEP how to convince school nurses and gain excellent publicity. We have excellent newspaper articles on why Tooties are so important in schools. It would be great if the local optometrists could be named as stressing the importance of vision. Offer to do a free screening at school. Get together with other ODs to concentrate on one school at a time or each do a school near their practice. Don't make a big project at first. All you really need is Tooties and you can spot all kinds of visual problems. The children will love you because you make learning fun. When you get ready, write to us and we can tell you how to screen lots of children effectively in one day. We screen 60 children every 20 minutes for a total of 600 per day which is 3,000 per week. It doesn't take many weeks to really know what you are doing and we have over 28 years of experience.
Schools everywhere use Tooties. Offer to show them how to use them more effectively and how to use them to spot visually-directed problems. It might be a good idea to concentrate on the learning disabled (LD) children at first. Later, when you evaluate normal children, you will find many who could use help to be more efficient.
If you do visit a school, don't lecture too much but demonstrate by asking for a group of 12 - 15 children. While they are having fun with Tooties you spot the visual problems and point them out to the teachers and parents. Then have the children sit and read so you can see their near point vision in action and critique. Now the parents and administrators will want you to screen the whole school. Later you can bring in instruments as necessary. Remember, at first only help a small group until you become a real expert. That way you can get by with only Set #4 or 7c and still get good results.
Recent Optometry Graduates
We can help young ODs just starting. Tell us about yourself and your practice, where you went to college and which optometry college. Did they teach you anything about Tooties? How much do you know about visual training (VT)? Have you ever taken a course from one of the great masters still teaching such as Getman, Hendrickson, Apell or Streff? If your budget is very low, as is usual with those getting started, the patient can get the Tooties and you can learn while teaching them. We can show you how. Before you can really be effective with LD children you need to practice lots with normal children to understand that their visual system leaves a lot of development to be desired.
Parents are willing to spend all kinds of money to help their children and yet so many optometrists, well qualified technically, have few practical ideas on how to tap this enormous potential. Let us show you how. Teachers need to be trained on how to identify and refer students needing visual care to you. The purpose of this booklet is to show you how easy it is. Naturally you will make money, and so will we, but our main goal is to help the millions of children who need to develop their vision better.
Many of the problems with LD children are caused by parents, unknowingly, and usually are a combination of many causes requiring very expert help in order to resolve. During early childhood the child's visual system, as well as many of their other systems, was not allowed or encouraged to develop adequately. If every child, for example, played ping pong, threw rocks at bottles on a fence and ran in the woods, they would have developed their visual system more. Added to this lack of development of visual control are all kinds of psychological problems. That is why it is not enough to just solve the visual problems. In conjunction with your expertise we work on the total problem. Even parents with lots of money who think that they are doing everything just right find that when we evaluate their children we still find lots of weaknesses. Our national ads encourage parents of "normal and perfect" children to have us evaluate their children and one of our conditions is that they see a qualified optometrist first who will send us a copy of his vision analysis.
VAKT
Many of you have studied the VAKT approach. This involves the following sensory systems: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactual. The Tooties system is designed to embrace all of these and to achieve excellent results quickly. Let us give an example of a college girl catching 21 Tooties at once from the Tootie Launcher. For many years 21 Tooties was the world's record won by Tracy Lord at age 19 in Atlanta, Georgia. The present world's record is 22, achieved in 1984 by a beautiful young woman, Malin Swartling, age 19, in Sweden. Most children can catch their age in Tooties up to 15. That is the point where the champions start because 15 or more is very difficult. Most adults with determination can get up to nine except for athletic coaches who have trouble getting past six. The problem with the coaches, who are quite athletic, is that they tend to use their brawn rather than their eyes and brains and try to catch the Tooties in sandwich fashion which is obviously more difficult. The world's champion for that method is a young college man, Ross Wentworth, when he caught 11 in February of 1984 and learned the skill in a relatively very short time. Ross is very fast, quite smart, very determined and doesn't mind failing.
Launcher and VAKT
In loading 21 Tooties on the launcher the student uses the visual system to make sure that the Tooties are lined up in a straight row. If the row curves, then obviously when the Tooties come down they won't come down in a straight line so the job of catching them becomes more complicated. The tactual and auditory come into play during the loading as there are usually several different kinds (weights) of Tooties which all look alike but require tactual and auditory discrimination to identify them and to decide where they should be placed in the line of Tooties on the launcher.
Now the kinesthetic system takes over for it is important to hit the launcher hard enough to get all the Tooties (almost 8 lbs.) up in the air but yet not too high or they will separate. While in the air and during the catching all of the systems are operating at once and intertwined. The visual system predicts the path of the falling Tooties and tracks the trajectory while guiding the whole body and kinesthetic system which gets the hands in position and the auditory and tactual start with the catching. During a good catch the sound of 21 Tooties plopping one after another into your hands is a great feeling and feedback for vision. Imagine a tower of Tooties about two feet long and spaced apart in the air. Many students make the mistake of using the central vision of their eyes to guide their hands rather than using their kinesthetic sense and their peripheral vision. Thus the eyes are not available to watch all the falling Tooties. Good peripheral vision is one of the essentials for knowing where your body is in time and space. It is a beautiful sight to watch a human with all their faculties operating at peak performance. So when you use Tooties you are helping your patient with much more than just vision. You are helping the patient to integrate and use all the systems, guided by vision. It also teaches them that it is fun to fail providing you learn something and try again until you succeed. Now the patient learns to apply these skills to his school work and not give up when he first fails to find the solution to a difficult problem.
Toss and VAKT
The Tootie Toss is more difficult to evaluate in terms of VAKT but here is a small sample. It is very effective in integrating all the aspects of VAKT together at once. The patient throws a Tootie at the net and it bounces back at him very quickly. Depending on whether the Tootie Toss is upside down, which is the very fast mode, it makes a big difference on how the patient reacts. First of all, their vision tells them how far away the Tootie Toss is. The tactual and kinesthetic help identify the kind of Tootie (weight, size, inner texture, etc.) so in combination with distance he thinks he knows how hard to throw. Throw too hard and it becomes more difficult. Too light and the trajectory becomes distorted. Using all of the senses he tries to get the Tootie to hit the net flat for a uniform return but is ready if it suddenly decides to turn to one side or up or down as it bounces back. One becomes alert or else. In fact we can take almost any woman who believes she is uncoordinated and dramatically improve her movement skills, in hands, feet, and total body movement in a few hours. It is amazing how quickly humans can improve when given the right opportunity with Tooties.
You, as an optometrist, are better qualified than most at helping children with learning disabilities especially if you know how to take advantage of the benefits of Tooties. You know that vision is dominant and its importance. You can improve the quality of your practice with a minimum investment of time and money and at the same time improve your volume. Each satisfied patient becomes an enthusiastic patients and is a great potential for more referrals. Tooties are very catchy (contagious, attractive, etc.) so when former patients continue to use them other people will ask about them and your name will be suggested. Not having Tooties in stores is a great advantage so people will have to see you to find out about them and get superior visual care at the same time.
Don't hesitate to write or call if we can help you, (310) 643-9882, but write also.
In a nutshell our personalized help service works like this.
You examine the patient and send us a brief report. You go ahead with glasses or contacts and any other treatment indicated. We send the parents a questionnaire along with some specific comments based on your analysis and recommendations. With that information we offer the parents several options depending on their interest and resources. If the best treatment is desired, we fly to your city and visit in the patient's home and live in a nearby hotel while we are literally working with the patient on a nearly 24 hour a day basis for five days. There are many different options depending on the circumstances. When advisable we take the patient away on a driving trip for a few days to get him out of the environment of his parents and friends. In some cases a chaperone may be advisable. If the child is doing poorly in school, then it doesn't hurt when we take him out of school for that time. The improvements in achievement are worth the loss of school time. During the training we work with the parents to find a suitable young person (college or high school) who lives nearby so we can train them to do the follow-up when we leave and to see that your advice on optometric visual training practice is followed up. Normally we recommend six months or more of follow up visual training which includes what we have done with Tooties.
