Summary: All about Infants and Toddlers with some prices and background info on how Tooties got started.
Tooties for Infants and Toddlers
Background: Tooties were invented in 1960 by Dr. John Hanson for his first toddler who was about a year old. He quickly discovered the benefits of having many Tooties and soon other parents wanted them for their children. It turned out that children of all ages love them and can benefit enormously. What Dr. Hanson invented by chance was a series of universal educational devices whose uses change as the child gets older. Thus the child never gets tired of them. So if you get lots of Tooties as soon as possible your children will benefit for many years even up thru college and soon their children will be using the same Tooties. Besides inventing something with universal appeal Dr. Hanson wanted Tooties to last forever in spite of advice to the contrary where many things are designed to wear out quickly. If a Tootie should ever break, return it for a free replacement. There is so time limit or proof of purchase required. Just save as much of it as you can for analysis and include $6.30 for each Tootie returned for shipping and handling.
By 1962 Tooties were in full production and today millions of children have benefited all over the world. In the U.S. almost every school district uses Tooties for improving reading, math and science as well as coordination and self-esteem. It turned out that Tooties were also useful for improving vision and thousands of eye doctors use them to help patients. Tooties are also excellent for helping old people stay fit or helping those recovering from illness or accidents. Almost any learning problem at any age can be cured quickly using Tooties. One of the best things about Tooties is that when used early in homes most of these problems can be avoided so Tooties are excellent for prevention.
Infants and Toddlers: Our best advice is that parents should get one or two dozen Tooties in an assortment of bright colors when their child is about eight months old. By the time the child is ready to crawl parents should add about a carton or two of Tooties. Each carton contains 72 Tooties and are much cheaper that way so wise parents will start with two or three cartons knowing how much their child will benefit as well as any later children. One of the many secrets of Tooties is that they are completely safe for both parents and children. Thus if a child should leave some on the floor parents won't stumble on them. Another secret is that they are very soft and conformable to one's hands as well as very heavy. The reason they must be heavy is that it is wise to strengthen a child's muscles as early as possible in a safe way to avoid injuries. Three Tooties weigh one pound so if a child can lift a dozen Tooties in a cloth bag they are lifting four lbs. and yet if they should fall on bare toes they don't hurt. Even ten lbs. of Tooties doesn't hurt.
When the child is crawling parents should make a number of criss cross towers of Tooties about ten to fifteen high about the room and encourage the child to crawl around and knock them over with his or her head or any part of their body. Parents should show their delight and make more towers. At some point the child will want to make her own towers so she can knock them down. Elementary age children delight in making towers 17 or more higher as it is so challenging.
Tooties are completely washable and even sterilizable in boiling water and when frozen become a soft ice cube for babies who are teething. Regular Tooties can also be baked in the oven to teach children to be careful of hot objects. Hot Tooties are lots of fun to squeeze and fondle, even for adults. In the beginning set your oven to about 150øF and later 200ø. Don't go over 300ø as the fabric could be damaged. Regular Tooties are designed so they transmit heat very slowly. Since any Tooties with Smoothy Tootie Crystals transmit heat very quickly these should not be heated more than 150øF. Leaving Tooties on the dash of a hot car is a good way to try them out. By the way a dozen Tooties are excellent to keep children busy while in the car.
For parents who want the best for their kids we suggest you get six cartons of Tooties which is called a unit. This is the ideal quantity for children in the range of 2 to 12 as determined by various university studies. Older children can still benefit tremendously if you have them but you don't need so many as they get older. Parents and schools get the best price when ordering six cartons of Tooties and since they last forever and children never get tired of them it is a great investment in their development. By about age two the child starts putting them end to end to make roads across the floor. Older children will appreciate that three Tooties end to end equal one foot and ten end to end equal one meter. All of a sudden math becomes interesting and more meaningful. With six cartons of Tooties 144 feet of roads can be made all over the house. Even bridges and underpasses for older children. Children can also sort the Tooties by color and even by weight if you request that two of your six cartons be of different weights and textures. Now the child can have even more fun sorting the Tooties.
Parents of infants and toddlers should go to the library and read the book "Playful Parenting" by Graselli and Hegner. It has many ideas on developing your child from 0 to 3 years old and you will see Dr. Hanson's name in there along with many of his ideas and illustrations on how to use Tooties and the various pieces of Tootie equipment to develop your child.
By about three or four your child may like it when you build an igloo of Tooties. It takes about 200 Tooties for a small igloo and is lots of fun. Upturn a wastebasket so you have a guide to make a perfect circle of about 18 inches in diameter. Add a second row of Tooties on top being sure to overlap the joints and with each row higher come in a little til the top of the igloo comes together. Hold the child's hands while she tries to sit on it to see if it supports her weight. If it should break that is a wonderful opportunity to do it again. Encourage the child to help you. Older children can even make doorways in the igloo. Another secret of Tooties is to have so many that you never run out whatever the child is building. Castles and forts are a favorite of older children and so is knocking them down.
About age three or four is a good time to add two Tootie Launcher, a Tootie Toss and a Tootie Bounce. The last two pieces of equipment could also be used as early as 18 months if parents are eager to play with their children. Tooties are designed to be self teaching so will keep the child busy even without the parent's active involvement. Tooties are a great baby sitter and when you have baby sitters they should be encouraged to play Tooties with your child. After age 12 Set 7c is your best buy.
This is just a brief introduction into the fabulous world of Tooties. Write or call for more information and order as many Tooties as you can afford as soon as possible. You will be delighted. Many hundreds of pages have been written about Tooties and their many uses. Even astronauts have used Tooties to maintain their muscle strength in space.
How to Order? Just decide on how many of which sets you would like and send a check or money order for total plus $19 for shipping anywhere in contiguous U.S. Californians should add sales tax. Let us know if it is OK to include some free bonus Tooties.

Summary: How Tooties may be used effectively to enhance physical education with handicapped children of all ages.
Adapted Physical Education using Tooties for even better results.
Movement is the secret of learning. Just watch puppies or kittens playing. It is essential so that their brain learns to control their muscles and the muscles become strong. So it is vital in the field of Adapted Physical Education to come up with ways to move for the exceptional individual. Linda Simpson of Santa Barbara was among the best at helping these kinds of children and her favorite tools included Tooties and Tootie Things.
The goal is to permit as much freedom as possible in a safe manner. Tooties are soft, fun to touch, and just the perfect shape and weight to handle. It takes about three years to develop a new Tootie and now hundreds of different types and sizes are available to fill any need. Over the past 38 years we own a lot of appreciation to the many PE teachers who have made suggestions to improve Tooties and Tootie Things. You can try to make your own but soon will realize that the children still prefer Tooties and that Tooties give the best results so why tinker with success. Just order as many Tooties as you can. They come is cartons of 72 with lovely assorted colors. Later add a Tootie Thing or two.
Have children make a road by placing Tooties end to end and then walking on them for balance. Sometimes you need to make two parallel roads about six inches apart for those who have trouble balancing on one road. For children in wheelchairs have them build a crisscross Tootie Tower and then knock it down. Knocking it down is often more fun than building. Tie some Tooties in a cloth bag and hang as a pendulum. When the child releases the pendulum hopefully it will knock down the tower built on the floor. Have a child lie on mat and then be buried with Tooties by the other children. Then take turns. It is so much fun bursting out of that pile of Tooties.
Later put a wastebasket upside down on the carpet and make a circle of Tooties around the base. Make lots of circles around the room. Some may be able to jump from one circle to the next or even hop. Others may crawl from circle to circle.
Place a second layer of Tooties on a circle and continue with more layers but making the circle smaller each time. Soon you will have an igloo. Carefully hold the child while he or she sits on the igloo. If it holds congratulate them. If it collapses, laugh and build it again. See how far children can throw, both over hand and under hand. The secret is to have at least a dozen Tooties so they can see where they land compared to the others. Ask them to throw underhand into a bucket. Use up all the Tooties before retrieving any. This is vitally important so the child can see his or her successes and errors. At least two dozen Tooties should be used.
All children should do weight lifting to strengthen their muscles. Tooties are one third of a pound each, about as much as a baseball, but they don't hurt. Once they can lift one in a cloth bag, try two and then three etc. Tooties don't hurt even when they fall on bare toes, not even the ten pound Tootie Babies. We like to start normal babies on weight training as early as about a year. The beauty of Tooties is in their softness and tactile sensation.
Be sure to try out the different types of Tooties so children can learn to discriminate by weight and feeling. This stimulates their brain. Be creative, try all kinds of ways to use Tooties and let us know so we can share your ideas with other teachers. Linda Simpson invented the very useful Tower on Head exercise. You make a tower on their head and they knock if off when you finish. Soon they will be making towers on their head and walking around the room. Besides being very soft, safe to chew on and fun to touch, Tooties are washable and sterilizable. Actually we have had wonderful Tooties, still in active use, that have never been washed for 20 years. We recommend not washing as it removes the special oils that make the fabric softer. But if Tooties fall in the mud, get chewed on or get slobbered over, by all means hand wash, dry them with a towel and hang up to dry. If in a hurry put them in a 200 degree F. oven for about 30 minutes or more but not in a microwave. Hot Tooties can be a lot of fun and are used by therapists.
Tootie Things
Tootie Toss: The principal items consist of the Tootie Toss, Tootie Launcher and Tootie Bounce. The Tootie Toss is a very strong, light aluminum frame 28 by 32 inches. It supports a very tight polyester net so that when Tooties hit the net the return is quite fast but can be very gentle depending on the thrower. The size of the holes in the net is critical to getting good results. The Tootie Toss has four legs so that it can be used at a gentle angle or turned upside down for a steeper angle. The legs fold in quickly so it can be folded flat for storage or to be carried. Many itinerant teachers take them from school to school. Very little children can sit very close in front of the Tootie Toss and throw. Normally you should not tell the child to catch but congratulate them when they do. Check out Web Site for more ideas: www.Tooties.com.
For children in wheel chairs you can prop up the bottom of the Tootie Toss on a box to get the correct angle so it comes back into the lap of the thrower. Don't pick up the Tooties until at least a dozen have been thrown.
Tootie Launcher: This is perhaps our most useful Tootie Thing but children tend to like the Tootie Toss better so when possible you should hide the Tootie Toss until they really enjoy the Launcher. It is a very strong board about 30" long and 6" wide with a pivot about one third of the way. It took many years to develop so if you try to build it be sure to copy it exactly and even then it may not work as well as ours. One or more Tooties are put on one end and child jumps or stomps on the other end. They can even drop a ten pound Tootie Baby on the other end to make the Tooties shoot up into the air. We even make a Teeny Tootie Launcher and Teeny Tooties for children in wheelchairs.
Tootie Bounce: This is a very strong and light aluminum frame that supports a very tight net. It may be used like a Tootie Toss with two children sitting Indian style and facing each other. Its principal use is to bounce Tooties vertically and when there is safe space the Tooties can be bounced very high. It's a great cardiovascular exercise. In the beginning you might bounce round balloons blown to different sizes. Then try putting a little water inside before the balloon is blown up. Be creative and share your ideas.
Economics 101: Tooties are more expensive than less useful materials but the benefits are fantastic. If money is tight, as in many schools, appeal to the PTA or a local service club like Rotary. Otherwise, just buy as many dozen as the school can afford and add more Tooties when you can. The best results possible are when parents have their own Tooties at home and follow the recommendations of the teachers. Working together is the secret. Consider the case of Alex in Austria. He was born brain damaged, could hardly walk or see and could only say a few words as well as many other serious problems. The specialists over there said he was hopeless and should be put into an institution but the mother never gave up hope. Tooties changed her life and improved her son tremendously. See www.Tooties.com for details.
Tooties Kit # 2: Many schools around the country are equipped with this kit which includes a carton of 72 colorful Tooties, six Tootie Tosses and six Tootie Launchers. Search for them as they often end up in a closet when an enthusiastic teacher retires. A new kit is only $1969, serves the whole school, lasts for many years, is lots of fun and delivers great results.

Tootie Help for Parents Summary:
Suggestions for helping your child, with and without Tooties or our teaching services.
Tootie Help for Parents
Thanks for asking for our help for yourself or your children. We at the Brain Development Center are proud we are the best in the world at what we do and our research helps us become even better. Thru our Creative Ideas Company we manufacture and distribute highly advanced, psychological learning materials all over the world. Since 1962 when Tooties were first offered for sale, millions of children have benefited in schools, homes, eye care centers, hospitals and other institutions. Even tho Tooties have been around for a long time you may not have heard of them. We call that condition "quindrexia" which is the state of not knowing what you don't know. The more one becomes educated the more we find out what we don't know. None of us can know everything so we have to be selective and learn how to find those who are experts in what we want know about. This can be a very difficult task discriminating between those who really know and those who are not as knowledgeable. In order to discern properly you have to become somewhat of an expert yourself or find someone in whom you have complete confidence.
Our fields of expertise include learning problems, attention deficit, concentration, coordination, vision, speech, brain damage from birth or accidents, self-esteem and improving perfectly normal, sharp children in reading, math, science, confidence, motivation, etc.
We don't know everything but have a good record at finding those who know what we need and then using their services as appropriate. Thus when asking us to help your child we should know as much about your child as possible. Of course tell us about their problems but also what they can do and how well. We also need to know the history such as birth conditions and types of treatment along the way, by whom, and the results and cost of such treatment. Were the benefits worth the time and money? Has your child had a complete visual exam recently by a qualified behavioral optometrist, preferably by one who uses Tooties?
One of the reasons we are so successful, even for seemingly hopeless cases, is that we take the total picture into consideration and are willing to expend extraordinary effort when necessary. If interested, ask for some case histories. Because children are usually part of a family we need to know about each of the other siblings and the parents. Please include photographs of each and a brief summary about their strengths and weaknesses, etc. For the parents we need to know their level of education, both informal and formal and what types of work they are trained to do. How much time is available to help the child in question without neglecting the other children?
What types of other resources are available. It may sound silly but if we know you have or have access to a boat, horse, dog, home in the country, etc. it could help your child depending on what needs to be done. As an example if the father is a Rotarian, it opens doors more easily to find experts in other parts of the world. Are you willing to travel if that is useful? Money is also an essential ingredient. Not everyone has an unlimited supply of money or time so by knowing what is available we can use creativity to get results within the limits available. Most families are pretty dedicated to their children but a few make impractical comments such as "We would sell our house if it would help our child". This is a nice gesture but where would the family live after the child improves? Please feel free to discuss any of these items with us and send whatever information you can as soon as possible.

Summary: More useful info on how to help your children. Much more detailed than Tootie Help # 1.
Tootie Help for Parents, No. 2
We hope that you have read the first Tootie Help. If not, be sure to request it and send a self-addressed stamped envelope. Most parents want to help their children and a few do a really good job in the many areas required. Some just see that they are clean and neat, some emphasize good manners, some push sports, some take them to shopping malls and movies and some push outdoor activities like camping, etc. Many help with homework or at least push to see that it is done but not always in a way that is best for the child. Children need all of these things and much more in their education and the best time to help them is before they go to school and are exposed to outside influences. And finally some go to extremes using the TV as a baby sitter. It is the easy way out. Unfortunately when children are born they don't come with an owner's manual and by the time parents get used to how to handle a two year old they are now three and require different handling so parents tend to be behind.
Millions of children in the U.S. and around the world have used the Tooties system since 1962. Tooties and the related equipment are so much fun and intuitive to use that few read the instructions on how to get the best results.
Frustrated Parents: It is very common for parents to be frustrated with their child's school and teachers. All you have to do is think about your own past educational experiences and think of how many teachers that you had that were really good at motivating you to want to learn. Usually most are just average, just putting in their hours, and some are really bad like my second year high school Spanish teacher. Fortunately my first year Spanish teacher was marvelous and so was my third year. One of the things we teach students is how to do well even when you have a bad teacher like my college English teacher. Some can really turn you off in many ways and even cause students to skip school or drop out. Prevention is the secret.
Fantastic Results Quickly is Possible: Many parents are reluctant to send us their normal, bright kids who are doing well in school because they think they can't be improved. But all of a sudden the student who was doing so well could be having serious problems. Then in a panic they want us to rescue their kids. The best time to help kids is before they are teenagers but it can be done after that also, even adults, but more effort is required. One of the secrets of the Tooties system is to find the student's motivation switch or switches. Everyone has them but some are very hard to find. Did you ever have a teacher who was so much fun that you loved going to class and even doing all kinds of extra work. Suppose all your teachers had been like that. There are many fantastic teachers out there but finding them is the problem. They don't learn it at the university where most schools of education are pretty poor. The good teachers throw out all the garbage they learned at the university and develop their own techniques for what works with kids. Universities can be very useful but many students are just putting in their time to get past the poor teachers just to get a diploma.
Falling in Love: If this can happen very fast why not use those same switches to motivate kids to fall in love with learning. That's what the Tootie system really does. Students get so turned on they don't want to stop. This is why we never accept students for less than a three hour learning session. Most of those who use the half or one hour sessions are taking advantage of the students. This applies to psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, etc. also. It's a financial thing. It's easier to take money from parents when you do it gradually even if the results are quite poor.
Why is our Psychology so much Better? Maybe it is because we are more interested in results than in making money. It is not that we are any smarter but the focus is different. The traditional therapy session lasts about fifty minutes. It occurs on a time schedule which is not based on how you or the therapist feels at that time. Who can say that on Wednesdays at 3:pm you are ready to learn and if you do get turned on the bell rings, the session is over and all that energy is lost. Our approach is different in that the student is with us for the whole day or week, something like summer camp, where there are lots of fun things to do and we wait until the moment of learning is ready. Then in a short time we get much more done than if we had tried to start the teaching at 8:am.
How can We Get such Fantastic Results so Quickly? For us it's easy because we have had lots of experience but it does involve hard work on our part. One of the secrets is to be perceptive as to when the student is in the right mood to really learn. In a typical traditional therapy session the therapist forgets completely about the student until the following week and then only has five minutes to review the five minutes worth of notes he or she took at the last therapy session. With the Tooties system we switch back and forth from learning to having fun and while the student is having fun our teachers are thinking of what to do during the next learning session.
Movement is another of our Secrets: Children love to move, run, climb, etc. and so do all young animals. That's nature's way of developing the brain and body so they work well together. Imagine how a mother must feel when she is forced to put her child on Ritalin because they move too much. Dumb doctors have given it a name such as hyperactivity or attention deficit disorder syndrome so they can get paid for treating it. In recent years they have removed the word syndrome and call it a disease because now the insurance companies will pay more easily for treatment. Nobody really wants to help these kids but just make money on them and schools often force parents to put them on drugs. It's the easy way out. We can cure or dramatically improve almost any hyperactivity or ADDS problem in a few days and without drugs. We take a different approach and encourage lots of movement and then fold in math, reading and science in a fun way.
Swimming with Professionals: All of us are swimming in an ocean of incompetent or even crooked professionals. Look at all the crooked politicians, lawyers, judges and you get an idea on how bad the situation is. Then consider all the incompetent doctors, teachers, auto mechanics, psychologists, etc. No wonder parents get so frustrated in their search for help. There are good professionals out there but finding them is like trying to find a tiny island of competence in a vast ocean of incompetence.
What do Medical Doctors Know about Kids: Even pediatricians are pretty incompetent when it comes to helping healthy, normal kids. Most of their studies have been devoted to kids who are sick or dead. Most are so busy they don't even know their own kids. But when you ask their advice they will claim to be very knowledgeable. Who then knows the most about kids? Try to find a good teacher who has had her own kids and see what they are like. Those are the islands you need to look for. We have almost no confidence in child psychologists but don't let that stop you from looking. If you find a good one please be sure to tell us.
Secret Fights among Professionals: Do you know that medical doctors and surgical doctors can have entirely different points of view. They pretend to get along in front of patients but secretly they don't. Imagine how much better it would be if they were a team, each using their respective strengths. Another good example is the different points of view between optometrists and opthalmologists. One is highly trained in surgery but not much in glasses and the other is the opposite. When looking for good vision see an optometrist first unless there is disease or an accident. But not any optometrist as most just want to sell glasses. Look for a developmental or behavioral optometrist who understands how normal eyes should really work. Their focus is good vision and how almost everyone can benefit from vision training. Tooties are very effective for vision training and can be used at home. When looking for an optometrist don't look for the closest one but ask if they are members of OEP which is a professional group encouraging advanced and continuous training in visual development. Also ask if they use or know about Tooties. If you do get a vision exam please ask for a written report written in plain English and send us a copy. We have a list of all the OEP members worldwide and can offer suggestions on which might be the best for your kids.
Learning Lenses: This is a complex story but if you get learning lenses which are quite weak of about plus 0.50 and your child wears them only when they are doing near work such as reading then it is quite likely they won't need nearsighted glasses as they get older. Your developmental optometrist has written information he can give you. This prevention is very important so don't delay in understanding how this works.
Concentration: One talented doctor who was watch us teach made the comment that one of the secrets of the Tooties system is to teach concentration. We teach how to concentrate intensely for long periods of time without effort and to be able to turn it on and off quickly on demand. Thus you are able to relax most of the time but when needed you can quickly turn on your intense concentration to get the job done.
Attention Span: University schools of education tend to teach that children have the attention span of a housefly but with the Tooties system it is easy to increase the attention span to hours, even for young children. The secret is in how to do it. We do it all the time so it is easy for us. From what we have observed in many families is that short attention span is caused by parents or by whomever the care giver is. It is much easier to just give in to the child's instant whims. Of course parents don't realize that they are the cause of the problem and it would not be fair to blame them as they just didn't know they were doing it.
Save Money and Hire a Smart Young Girl to Teach: She could be any age but we find that from seven to twenty is a good range. The most important quality is that she is alive and responsive, someone who would make a good role model for your child. In Panama the dean of a university was concerned about all the students who hated math so in a few hours I changed them so that math was fun. The dean was worried as to who would teach them when I left or if any were to fall back so I offered to train a teacher in the Tooties system. I looked at his teachers and none were suitable, then I tried high school and couldn't find what I wanted. Finally a mother of a seven year old girl said I could use her little girl, who hardly knew that multiplication existed. She was alive and lots of fun to teach so in about six weeks she was teaching scientific calculators to the students as well as geometry, trig and some algebra. Of course she was very shallow in her knowledge of these subjects but she did a great job in motivating the university students to appreciate how much fun math can be when you have an exciting teacher. Most parents will have better luck with a high school girl and preferably one who knows how to touch type.
Surely you have heard the saying that a person who acts as his own lawyer has a fool for a client. In a similar way you can get much better results having a girl teach your kids instead of you. You can still teach but the girl can accomplish all kinds of things that your child would make it difficult for you to teach. She becomes a powerful intermediary. Now your teaching is done thru the girl and the results are much better.
How do you use such a Girl? Give her lots of freedom to have fun with your child and deviate from the lessons whenever she sees fit. Make sure she can devote at least three hours on the days she comes in. Besides her salary give her bonuses every now and then when she does something well. Borrow, rent or buy an electric typewriter, not a computer, and have the girl teach your child to touch type. Usually you can start by age four. By the judicious selection of practice words you can improve the child's vocabulary, spelling and reading without them realizing it. Make a list of the things you would like the girl to cover but give her the freedom to do it her way and when she thinks is best.
Should you buy Tooties? Of course, as that makes the teaching so much easier and more fun. Tooties were designed to appeal to all ages from infants to the elderly. It is just how you use them that changes. When done properly your kids will use Tooties in some way or another almost every day with the uses becoming more sophisticated as they get older. Tooties are designed to last for many years and might even be used by grandchildren. Should a Tootie ever fail for any reason we will replace them free for a small shipping and handling fee. There is no time limit and no receipts or proof of purchase is necessary. What better guarantee can you get? Have the girl read the directions and try out the various educational games on your child. If a girl can only come in once a week you may find it useful to hire a second girl to come in another day as you should have at least two such lessons a week. Temporarily you might have to give up some of the child's other activities. When you get ready to order some Tooties write or call for advice depending on the age and what you want to accomplish for your children. A good starting point is under a thousand dollars but if child is under six we would suggest splurging another couple thousand dollars as the benefits will be much greater. Should you hire us? Maybe, it depends on your finances. How much is your child worth? Would the price of a new car be worth it to rescue your child? Often, all you need is lots of Tooties and a good girl to be your child's friend and teacher. Maybe you can invite us in for a three hour session to evaluate and teach the girl. That's a very inexpensive way to go. Some people think we are very inexpensive because we get such good results quickly. After all, how much is your child worth. Many parents come to us after they have spent thirty to hundred thousand dollars and still haven't helped their child. One place you don't want to try is any of those hospital programs that advertise heavily. That is just a way to milk your insurance money and your child is often worse after 30 days with other troubled kids. Another program we have looked into which has grave weaknesses is the Tough Love program. While the originator may be able to get good results some chapters around the country are like the blind leading the blind. But check them out for yourself as maybe they have improved. Another good reason for not using us is that we don't accept insurance money. We don't want administrators sitting in an office telling us how to do our business. If you have anyone who is doing poorly in school or even failing from pre-school to college you need to take action quickly. Don't wait for Easter or X'mas holidays. .Send Details on your Child: Let us know about your concerns and what you have already tried. Summary: A brief article on how your child's grades, and or behavior may be improved dramatically in a week or two, including almost any learning disability or dyslexia. For all ages. We have great success with brain damage cases also. Don't give up.
Improve Almost Anyone Quickly with New Hi-Tech Psychology
We specialize in developing normal, sharp people's hidden talents and making them much better than they are. Imagine being able to study much more efficiently, read very fast while understanding better, get better grades, a better job, more money as well as becoming more popular. We can dramatically change people in a week or two but it may take them some time to fully integrate all the possibilities with their new personality.. We open the door and you take off to becoming more self-confident, more beautiful, ambitious and happier, etc. Almost any romantic problem can also be helped, especially if one contacts us early. It is fun showing a women how to find the man of her dreams who really loves her.
Even very serious problems and all ages can be treated with this system called QET for quick effective therapy, but most of our experience is in the range of ages six to forty. For instance a two year old dominating his mother with temper tantrums can be "cured" in just a few days. Some of the serious problems with which we have had amazing success include failing in school, not liking school, car accidents, hyperactivity, learning disabilities and brain damage from many causes including birth. One Air Force pilot thought he would never walk again after a jet crash and 7 years of treatment. Then a doctor who knew of our method and Tooties caused a miracle to happen.
Our new hi-tech psychological techniques invented by aerospace engineer John M. Hanson are not really new but have 25 years of proven experience to back them up. Millions have used the Tooties QET system around the world in schools, homes, and vision care centers, etc. However we are not without our critics. Some so-called educational experts say that learning disabilities are impossible to cure, that they can only be made less bad. We don't like to play games with words but these LD students become so well that they can teach others and show almost none of their LD tendencies. For instance a 19 year old girl in Sweden diagnosed as hopelessly hyperactive and brain damaged at age ten was so much improved that now she is studying medicine at the university. And it only took three weeks even though she was one of our most difficult cases. Our services are available worldwide.
How can we get such dramatic results so quickly? For serious cases the training must be done on a 24 hour per day basis for three to four weeks. Normal people can be improved in just a few days such as a long weekend but it is better if you have five full days. When possible it is a good idea to have a one or two day follow-up from time to time, at least for the first six months after training.
Two leading universities in Texas and New York have started to imitate our 24 hour therapy but unfortunately their results are not nearly as good as ours. One reason is that they use three different therapists in eight hour shifts so they lose continuity with the student and their therapists don't know how to use Tooties effectively. Tooties are very effective analytical tools that allow the therapist to look into one's brain and see how it processes information. Even more importantly the Tooties are self-teaching educational materials that at the same time you are being analyzed you are improving. It is really amazing how it works. One young lady was doing a Tootie exercise linked to a calculator and the next morning all her pimples were almost gone. She could hardly believe that a calculator and Tooties could be so effective. Actually it was not really the calculator or the Tooties but what was going on in her brain caused by the calculator and Tooties as well as some basics in dermatology. It sounds impossible but for those who don't like pimples and possible scars it is worth a try.

Tooties Learning Materials
"Learning by Doing" September 18, 1997
Dear
Thanks for calling, faxing or writing for info on Tooties. You probably have heard that Tooties are the best learning materials investment you can make for your schools. Millions of children have enjoyed and benefited from Tooties over the past 35 years all over the US and in many foreign countries.
Tooties are designed to be self-teaching and work well with all ages but you get better results with trained teachers. You can train your own teachers or invite us to provide in-service workshops. Tooties may be used in classrooms or multi-purpose rooms or even outdoors. Special classes such as learning disabilities, hyperactivity, attention deficits and poor reading can benefit very much. We have a special program for parents where we can dramatically improve almost any student in about 5 to 15 days from pre-school thru college. It is a little expensive but they save their child and are free from continued worrying as the child will do very well in school and later in life.
The Tooties materials are very durable and made to last for many years. In fact, the individual Tooties will be replaced free indefinitely should they ever get damaged for any reason with a modest shipping and handling charge. This is another reason to have lots of Tooties. High Schools and Universities can get by with Set 2 or 7c depending on the application and don't need as many Tooties. Send us more details on what you want to accomplish.
We have over a hundred different types and sizes of Tooties depending on the application and years of research have established several sets that work best for different applications in schools or homes. The best possible results occur when schools use Tooties and parents have their own small set 7c at home so kids can practice on their own.
Perceptual Motor Kit 2 - Only $1,969 plus $94 for shipping.
Consists of 6 Tootie Launchers, 6 Tootie Tosses and 6 dozen Tooties. Suitable for a whole school but may be used in one classroom at a time or split between two or more classrooms. Many schools use them also for physical education and special education. This is our best value.
Perceptual Motor Set 7c - Only $795 plus $28 for shipping.
Consists of 2 Tootie Launchers, one Tootie Toss, one Tootie Bounce and 32 Tooties of three types. Suitable for a classroom or teacher specialist such as psychologist, learning disabilities, math or reading, etc. Also great for homes and optometrists for vision training.
Perceptual Motor Set 1e - Only $798 plus $23 for shipping
Consists of a carton of six dozen Tooties of three or more types. Lower grades should have extra Tooties kept in the room. Studies indicate 6 to 10 cartons produces good results with either of the above sets but even one or two cartons is useful. When ordering more than two cartons ask for a quote on price.
These materials were developed by Dr. John Hanson, a former rocket scientist turned educator and psychologist. He is the inventor of QET (Quick Effective Therapy) where almost anyone can be dramatically improved in 5 to 15 days, even those with severe problems such as learning disabilities, hyperactivity, attention deficits, self-esteem, brain damage, dyslexia, anorexia and poor reading, math or science, etc. Have parents send details and photographs of any child they wish to improve for complete information.

Learning Disability Break Thru
Summary: All kinds of information on how almost any Learning Disability may be helped and usually very quickly. Also give some of our philosophy on teaching and how you can best utilize our materials and services. The potential is enormous.
Learning Disability Break Thru Including Hyperactivity, Adds, Dyslexia & Car Accidents, etc.
Summary: Almost anyone can be improved no matter how hopeless it seems providing you can find someone who knows what to do and has had lots of successful experience. The first step is to throw out your resistance to change and become a believer. It took medical doctors 50 years to accept that the stethoscope was better than putting their ear on the patient's chest. With the Tooties system students can dramatically improve grades in college or lower schools.
Resistance to Change
Many years ago Dr. John M. Hanson of the Brain Development Center near Los Angeles, and the inventor of Tooties used by millions around the world since 1969, discovered cures for learning disabilities, dyslexia, hyperactivity, reading problems, attention deficit disorders, lack of self-esteem, insecurity, shyness and a host of other problems. Thirty years have passed and many teachers, doctors and parents still have not seen the light. They are still clinging to the old fashioned ideas that a "cure" is impossible. Even if the word "cure" is changed to "improvement" it still raises suspicions. At the same time our teachers around the world continue to get good results fairly quickly, even on the most difficult of cases.
Why are people so resistant to change? People tend to avoid problems and changes bring new problems. Feelings are another kind of problem. No one wants to hurt another's feelings. When you show a mother how easy it is to solve a personal problem that has occupied her for years you can imagine how bad she feels. She has expended so much effort and dedication in trying to help her child she needs to be rewarded with some success and praise for all her hard work. To say that you have an easy solution is a terrific blow to her ego and makes her feel guilty that she wasted all those years. We would even be reluctant to tell her how we do it as it seems so silly to the uninitiated and would make her feel more guilty.
Before we try to explain why people are the way they are we need to say that there are many reasons why it is not good to change too quickly. Society would be a disaster if everyone changed all the time. We need a constancy in our lives but children should be taught early that some change is good and that they should keep their minds open. Unfortunately, most teaching is related to teaching things and not thinking.
This goes way back in history as to why we have education and the simple explanation is that land owners and factory owners needed workers able to do basic tasks and they don't want them to think but just do what they are told. Things have not changed much over the years as we still need workers but now with somewhat higher skills but nevertheless still workers. It has only been in recent years that universities teach students the skills required to open their own businesses. Unfortunately, the universities still are not very good at teaching thinking but hope that it is acquired in the process of learning complicated things.
Earthquakes
To try to explain why people are so resistant to change we need to give some examples of history and even some very current examples. A good example of present resistance is the earthquake problem. It would be very useful to know when an earthquake will occur so that lives and property can be saved. There is a man in New Mexico named Browning who has a proven track record in predicting earthquakes with an 80% accuracy. Because he is not 100% accurate many academicians don't give him much credit for his predictions. They attack him in all sorts of ways by saying he doesn't have any formal education in earthquake studies. It is another way of saying that he isn't a member of the club so therefore his work should not be recognized. He does have three degrees in other sciences and is a former test pilot so there is no doubt that he is well able to attack the tasks he has chosen. One doesn't even need to go to school to be the best at something but it helps if that person has the time. Usually they are too busy making progress. In the meantime those companies who do believe Dr. Browning's predictions are able to benefit enormously. Knowledge is power. How you use it is up to you. One of Dr. Browning's marvelous comments is that his goal is to satisfy his customers and not his critics. Too many people bow to the academicians. We applaud his internal fortitude.
School Superintendents
In Southern California it used to be and still is to some extent that no one could be a superintendent of a school district if they were not a graduate of USC. No matter how good you were nor how many other degrees you had, none were recognized unless you went to that particular university. In other words they held a monopoly on the schools here which inhibited new ideas from coming in from the outside. People who hold the monopolies here and in other parts of the world love them because it prevents changes that might threaten their way of doing things. Fortunately no one has a monopoly on thinking so never let yourself be intimidated.
Stealing Ideas
The Brain Development Center also holds a monopoly on being able to help anyone fairly quickly but we like to think that we are more open to new ideas than others and willing to share our ideas. We welcome ideas on how to cure learning problems, etc. even faster but if the ideas are too strange it would be normal for us to be reluctant also, at least in the beginning. The psychology departments of at least two leading universities have tried to steal our system but didn't bother to consult with us and now say that our system is not any good because they can't duplicate it. It is so easy to see the dumb mistakes even those well educated people make but why should we help them steal our ideas. Bubonic Plague Let's go way back in history to 1347 when the Black Plague started killing millions of people. It lasted about four years and killed about one third to one half of all the people in Europe. People died within about three days of getting sick and there were so many dead around that few people were interested in keeping records and like so much of history one has to be skeptical of what you read as most history is written after the fact and slanted to the view of the author or his superiors. Since rats had always been so common no one suspected rats or their fleas might have been the cause of the Black Death. So in desperation people tried all kinds of other cures, none of which were effective but how did they know since some people lived. Why do some children have learning problems and others not? We think that we have a good idea as to how it happens. Many people believe such problems are inherited in the genes but our research indicates that relatively little comes from the genes. The same is true of nearsightedness but it is so difficult to convince people that it is preventable in most cases. Selling eyeglasses is a billion dollar business so why change. For the best in vision care ask us for a list of behavioral or functional eye doctors in your area or country.
Unseen Dangers
Until the invention of the microscope by a Dutch scientist it was impossible to know that in perfectly clear water could be very dangerous bacteria. Even when we know what causes Cholera and how to prevent it people still die regularly from this very painful death. Fortunately it is rare in the U.S. and the more civilized countries but in these days of rapid airplane flights and poor immigration policies it could happen at any moment. In the 1800s England was quite civilized and yet there were serious epidemics of cholera until London built a very extensive and expensive sewer system.
In the early 1900s the experts thot that malaria was caused by bad air so houses were built on stilts to get them out of the mist that covers the ground in the early morning. In hospitals in Panama during the building of the Panama Canal they used to put the feet of the beds in cups of water to keep the ants from crawling up on the beds. That water was a perfect breeding ground for malaria and yellow fever mosquitoes. It was so hard to convince the authorities to get rid of the cups because the ants were a more visible problem than the mosquitoes and not many people believed that tiny bugs in the saliva of the mosquito could cause something so bad as malaria and yellow fever. Imagine how hard it was for those who believed that they had such a simple cure to convince the authorities. Learning problems, etc. are just as frustrating for parents. Teachers are not as interested in solving the problem as it provides good jobs. Doctors and pharmaceutical companies are not very interested in changing things because it makes money for them in supplying Ritalin and other medical services like brain scans.
Fear of Criticism
Even when a fantastic medical cure is invented it is often held back by the inventor because if he publishes it then he is subject to criticism by his peers. A good example is Dr. Janetta. (not sure of name) He invented a very simple permanent cure for a very serious, painful malady for which there had been no cure. The ailment is Trigeminal Neuralgia and the pain it causes on the side of one's face is terrible. Some of the treatments have been very strong drugs that almost killed you in the process. Another treatment was cutting the nerves to that part of the face which wasn't very satisfactory either. What Dr. Janetta discovered was that the cause was pressure on the nerve in the brain as a person gets older and a blood vessel expands. In a very simple procedure he makes a tiny cut into the brain from behind the ear and puts a tiny silicone sponge between the nerve and the offending blood vessel. Imagine all the people condemned to suffer because he was afraid to make his discovery public for many years. He was afraid his critics would say it is too simple or that it would not last.
How we do it
Our treatment of any learning disability, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity is also relatively simple but it does involve very heavy, intensive Tooties therapy for up to about 30 days or less in most cases. It is extremely hard work for the therapist and is very difficult to teach to others, especially those not willing to work very hard. On the surface it is hard to believe that what we do will be useful because it is so indirect and seems so simple. Those who try to copy our system give up too soon as it seems boring to untrained observers.
Intense Concentration
One of the things that we do is to teach the student to concentrate intensely for long periods of time without effort and then to turn it off and relax. Once they can do that the rest of their development is relatively a pleasure to teach as we see them beaming with excitement at their progress. The Tootie Launcher is one of our most effective tools for this objective along with the Tootie weighing exercise even tho neither looks very impressive on the surface.
In a way it is like taking the student to a summer camp where all the distractions of friends, family and the school are not present. Most parents ask if it will last when the student returns to their normal environment and yes it does last but sometimes a five day follow-up is recommended after a month or two in their normal environment. Usually we offer suggestions to parents and the student's teacher which we hope they will follow. If a disruptive, poor student returns to a school where everyone knows how dumb they were it is hard for them to accept the student as a brand new smart person. Therefore the ideal would be to enroll the student in a new school and not let his or her records follow them as the new teachers will treat them as the records indicate. That's a normal, human condition because people don't believe that anyone can change so quickly. Parents tend to find all kinds of excuses as to why they can't change schools and to insure that the student's record does not follow them.
Costs
Our fee schedule is very simple so you know in advance. It includes everything such as teaching, learning materials, hotels, food, car rentals, etc. except air fare. Fees are payable in advance and no insurance is accepted. We charge a five day minimum plus a three day cushion in case we have to go longer. During the preliminary consultation and evaluation we can determine how long the treatment is expected to take. There is a $300 fee for the initial consultation. Our fees are on a sliding scale downward as our task usually gets easier with time and it saves you money. If money is a big concern we suggest you start with one of our teachers who can do most of the teaching at a much lower rate than the director even tho they might take longer and can handle only the relatively simple cases. Our lowest cost is a "do it yourself" by buying Tooties Set 7c and following the manual. Great for all kids of any age.
Conclusion
If you don't believe us, don't use our services as we don't have time to convince you. One principal of a private school for problem children was so arrogant we didn't try to convince him. Instead, we felt sorry for his wonderful boy of nine whom we could have easily helped even tho he was considered one of the worst. We had evaluated the boy in about one hour with our Tooties techniques and found he had all kinds of possibilities. The fact that we can cure or improve almost anyone does not mean that we have the time to do it. Unfortunately we must be selective as to which cases we accept. To do our job well we must have complete flexibility.
We have many more examples but don't want to burden you. If you are really serious about helping your child and can afford our services then we suggest you call some of our references but you must write first and ask if you may call. Be sure to explain in detail your child's problems and personal data as well as details and costs of the treatments you have tried and the results if any. Be sure to send a copy to us at the address below.
Handicapped People and Electro Shock Therapy
Normally we don't do handicapped children any more as they are too easy and others can help them less expensively but since we were the best we can offer useful suggestions. Learning disabilities, etc. are more of a challenge as the problems are not as obvious. Just be aware that even in the most hopeless of cases such as car accidents that some things can be done and that could lead to further improvements. We have had lots of success in even the most impossible cases so why not tell us about your problem. Just because many experts say it is impossible does not mean that it is so. Some psychiatrists refer to us their most difficult cases and so far we have been very successful. Imagine a 63 year old woman, a former professor, undergoing eight years of electro shock therapy once a month and still did not improve. We got dramatic results in a very short time. In another case a girl of 14 was badly injured in a car accident that killed her mother. For seven years she was like a vegetable and locked up in her room except for visits to the psychiatrists who had her on very heavy medication. In three weeks of Tooties therapy she had recovered almost completely and was a delight to teach. We don't know how she is years later as the father did not follow our advice to send her in for a follow-up but I heard thru our psychologist in her city that she has a job and is doing fairly well. Our phones and fax are not listed so you must write first with details about your problem.
Warning
Whatever you do, don't use the hospital services that are highly advertised on TV. It's a scheme to milk the insurance companies of about 30 to $50,000 and your child comes out worse. Imagine the bad influence of having your child in an incompetent program for 30 days with 50 similar kids. It is not only bad for your child but is a complete waste of money. Caveat Emptor!

Learning Disability Booklet 7c:
Summary: Prepared for national convention in Minneapolis and is very thoro in detail. Useful info for normal children as well. Heavy emphasis is placed on the importance of vision training and finding an Optometrist who uses Tooties.
LD Book7c on C-4 840206 REV 3/28/86
Preface
We believe that optometrists are a vital link in helping solve learning disabilities by treating visually related problems and would like to enlist their talents. In addition to helping many people we hope to show that it can be very rewarding in self-satisfaction and financially. It is more effective to teach the importance of psychology and education to optometrists than to teach psychologists and teachers how to be optometrists. We feel that optometrists will benefit from exposing these professionals to enough about the fundamentals of vision functioning so that they can spot potential visual problems and refer them to you.
A psychomotor program called Tooties, used by millions of children in schools worldwide, could be the common bond as Tooties are also effective in optometric visual training thus opening the doors for optometrists to work with the schools. This means catching many visual problems before they get severe and bringing in lots of patients who need help.
Some parts of the program can be delicate since the very things that turn some doctors on may turn others off. Even our own educational part is quite delicate because when we can "cure" children's problems so quickly it reflects badly on some teachers, psychiatrists and psychologists and may cause some to think that their job is in jeopardy. With the help of an optometrist, Dr. Leon Lipkis, O.D. of Los Angeles, who really believes in and uses Tooties regularly, we were able to help Vicki, a 23 year old "dyslexic" who could not read and who had not been helped much after seven months of twice weekly visits to an optometry college clinic.
If you need advice on helping a particular student, write to us or call us at (310) 643-9882 (7 - 9 AM California time is best) but always follow up with a letter. Leaving a message on our answering machine is not always sufficient. If you want to avoid the answering machine, use (310) 643-8775 or fax at (310) 643-8559. If the parents chose to write directly, ask them to include complete details on the patient in their first letter and a picture of family with names and ages of each member.
Before you read too far let us warn you up front that we really don't know for sure why our methods produce such fantastic results quickly. We have been searching for answers for over 23 years but the magic of why it works is elusive. This bothers some educators and psychologists who think many of our techniques are quite unrelated even though the children love them. Someday we will discover the reasons but in the meantime we just keep on getting good results. In most cases we attack the problem in a very unusual, unorthodox, indirect manner playing by ear so to speak. It is very difficult to teach this concept to others but we think that optometrists are the most likely professionals to be able to capture these delicate threads or nuances and put them to effective use. To speed up the learning process, especially if serious vision problems are evident, we often bypass the sight input part of the sensory system and work the student with their eyes closed. Then, when they improve their brain process functioning, they can be referred to an optometrist for testing and visual training (VT) as appropriate. We prefer to have an OD thoroughly examine the eyes and vision prior to our work but unfortunately there isn't always time since most of our clients are almost completely improved in a week. With the psychological part done the child will do even better on his VT which is still very vital to the child's continued improvement.
Teachers really want to be good but unfortunately too often they are not as well prepared for this phase of teaching as they might be. Our goal is to help teachers understand the importance of vision. Optometrists should feel good about their valuable contribution to patients and society and be well paid for it. When well paid you can afford to be generous and help others who cannot afford care such as certain parents or even your local school district. For our part we are willing to donate up to a month, when required, to visit your area and help your study group of optometrists and assistants become as proficient as possible in helping lots of people and be financially rewarded at the same time. Because so many schools already use Tooties we have the magic key that opens the doors to almost any school district so that you and they can work together. Over the past 23 years the use of Tooties has proven very valuable for helping children to improve reading, math and vision and we owe much of our success to the wonderful optometrists who pioneered in the use of our materials when they were new and not as popular. Now we can afford to be even more generous with you and your staff to insure you are getting the most from your investment of time and money. We are most interested in helping the adventurous doctors who lead the way for the others in your exciting profession.
Columbia University and the University of Texas have now adopted 24 hour psychological therapy techniques similar to the ones Dr. John Hanson pioneered many years ago which adds even more credibility to our program. We are eager to help anyone expand into this field of improving people so quickly. Optometry is a vital ingredient.
Learning Disabilities Helped by Optometry
by John M. Hanson, PhD, Director Brain Development Center Tooties, California 90250
No profession is better qualified to help students with visual problems that contribute to learning disabilities than optometry, especially those who are members of OEP and COVD. Parents are willing to spend all kinds of money to help their children and yet so many optometrists, well qualified technically, have few practical ideas on how to tap this enormous potential. Teachers need to be trained on how to identify visual problems and refer students needing visual care to you. The purpose of this booklet is to show you how easy it is. Naturally you will make money, and so will we, but our main goal is to help the millions of children who need help desperately. No one is better qualified than you for teaching children how to develop and use their vision effectively. Then we can help you with the psychological and educational components. Together we will make a terrific team.
Some people think that teachers are well qualified to help students with learning disabilities but the sad fact is that too many are not. However they could be much better if they knew how to use Tooties properly. First, the colleges of education that teach teachers are not doing as good a job as they could or should. Ask any teacher which courses were the worst and the reply will usually be that most were in education. Instead, education courses should be the best with the most exciting professors. There are many good teachers in schools but ask them how they got that way and they will usually tell you that they threw out many of the things they learned in the school of education and on their own learned to do what worked in the classroom. Think back about how many poor teachers you had in school and college. Do you realize that it only takes one bad teacher to ruin a child's yearning for learning for life? Often the parents have absolutely no control over the fact that just such a teacher is their child's teacher. Suppose you loved math in high school but in college you had a terrible algebra or calculus teacher who turned you off thereby ruining your opportunity to become an optometrist. Entirely possible. We have seen it happen in similar situations over and over again. We specialize in solving these types of problems quickly. Almost any failure or setback can be reversed to bring success when you know how. Some just seem impossible. We can take almost any student who is doing poorly in college or high school (even elementary school) and dramatically improve them in 5 to 10 fun filled, full time days. Even more satisfying and useful is helping to improve a normal student who seems to be at capacity or nearly perfect.
Schools of Education
One of the problems with the schools of education is that they spend far too much time studying the history of education and hardly any time on how children learn. We travel around the world looking for the best teachers and in the field of optometry there are and have been many greats such as Skeffington, Getman, Hendrickson, Fleming, Barstow, Kadet, Kraskin, Streff, Apell, and Schrock, etc. One of the greatest teachers is Professor Les Nason, Ed.D, formerly of the USC School of Education. Every optometrist, parent and student should order his book. More than half a million copies have been sold. The title is "You Can Get Better Grades" by Les and Fran Nason. Only $15 ppd. from Creative Ideas. Professor Nason can do miracles with almost any student and yet his great ideas are still not accepted in the university schools of education because they are considered too simple. Actually there is much more to the story. Another great book that we sell is Dr. Jerry Getman's "How to Develop Your Child's Intelligence". Only $17 ppd. When Dr. Getman wrote this book he was way ahead of his time and he still is. He's terrific. For parents of children from birth to age 3 we recommend "Playful Parenting" by Graselli and Hegner for only $19 ppd.
Teachers
Millions of children use Tooties in schools all over the nation so we have had the opportunity to find out who many of the really good teachers are and of course the not so good, and what they can do with children. We love helping teachers become even better than they are. Of course it is unfair to put all the blame on teachers. Most of the blame should be on parents for not adequately preparing their children in the years before they go to school. It is a difficult job being a parent with so much to learn and few good parenting schools, and even fewer attending them. With Tooties parents can learn on their own and raise better children. Many parents are to blame for not working closely with the school to help their child find the good teachers. When this is not possible they should teach their children how to learn on their own in spite of a poor teacher. Parents are also to blame for being quindretic (not knowing what they don't know) about the importance of vision. That is, they don't know that they don't know much about vision so how can they take any positive action? The AOA seems to be trying its best to inform parents but we think there is much more to do. We would love to offer some suggestions and still avoid the controversy with medical doctors.
Visual Training
In the eyes of many parents traditional optometric visual training (VT) is costly, time consuming and often does not achieve the desired results. Parents are often at fault by not encouraging students to practice at home. With Hanson's Motivation Techniques the student will enthusiastically practice in spite of the parents' apathy. With the Tooties System and Hanson's Motivation Techniques your years of superior technical training can pay off. Unfortunately colleges usually do not teach us how to make money nor how to think but tend to overwhelm us with facts and figures so that we can work for someone else who makes the money. The good news is that a number of colleges now offer entrepreneur courses.
One of our secrets to success is to make the parents really want to become involved in their child's VT and to participate in the training along with the rest of the family. The activities prescribed will make everyone aware of and concerned with the importance of vision and the fact that their vision while improving is not as good as it should and could be. As a result of this new knowledge they often urge their friends to seek your vision care.
Learning Lenses
We believe in the use of learning lenses. We are sure that you believe in their value also, to relieve the stress of prolonged near point seeing, enhance visual information processing, and help prevent maladaptations, i.e., visual and eye problems. But too often lenses alone do not solve learning related visual problems or learning problems per se. Parents of successful children are your best source for referrals. Parents love to use Tooties at home and thus become even closer to their children as each tries to improve their vision functioning, tracking and eye-hand skills on the Tootie Toss, Tootie Launcher and Tootie Bounce. These aids are designed to do much more than just improve vision. When only used in optometric offices for short periods of time many of the possible benefits are lost. For frequent and prolonged fun-filled as well as learning enhanced times it is essential that every patient also have Tooties Set #7c or #4 available for home use. It is better if they buy it but it would also be easy to have several sets available for loan or rental for parents who cannot afford to buy their own. The child needs many hours of individual practice and at times should invite in siblings, friends and relatives but preferably no more than three children at once to avoid having to take turns. Taking turns, while very sociable, can be very distractible and detrimental to the learning process.
Expand Your Horizons
Dr. Hanson has traveled all over the country visiting optometric offices and attending conventions in order to personally meet many of over 700 optometrists who use Tooties. He welcomes the opportunity and an invitation to do an all day training session with your assistants. Some optometrists know how to make VT financially rewarding as well as realizing its importance to children but many adults could also benefit from VT. Using Tooties at home with their children is a non-threatening way for parents to discover the benefits of VT and tell others about your services.
Office Executed Visual Training
In the past, in-office VT was the only effective means of getting good results because neither parents nor children were likely to follow-up on the out-of-office (home) practice suggested. In the office environment the doctor has complete control and can often delegate much of the work to a skilled assistant. This procedure, while effective, is expensive from the parent's point of view and is very time consuming when you consider the number of hours used in bringing the child to and from each session. Because results are not readily visible to the parent or child they begin to have doubts about the value of the program and when they have doubts the program is bound to lose effectiveness. For doctors who believe that in-office VT is the only way to go let us suggest that by adding out-of-office use of Tooties the child will be more motivated to practice and the parent is more likely to see results and want to tell other parents about your effective program. Naturally you need to indoctrinate both child and parent in the proper use of the Tooties and encourage parents and other members of the family to enjoy the Tooties as well. In this case you enlist the aid of the patient and/or his parents to be one of your teachers so that he can learn to spot visual problems in others and you might get even more referrals.
Office Directed Visual Training
We feel that the use of Tooties opens the door to a much wider practice of VT without necessarily increasing the size of your staff if you are willing to try the technique of "office directed but home executed" VT. Tooties are designed to be self-teaching and are irresistible to children if you keep the training a "fun" system. Even after the first session with the child it is effective to let him take a Tootie Launcher home to practice. Soon he will want his parents to buy a set, which is highly recommended because the Tooties are so much fun with all ages, even at adult parties. And each time the Tooties are used they teach others about the importance of vision, your program and the importance of really learning to use vision effectively even for people without any apparent problems. In other words almost everybody could benefit by some VT. Your most potent source for referrals are lots of satisfied and enthusiastic patients who continue to use Tooties at home and tell others about the importance of VT.
Some Specific Advice about using Tooties
It takes time to learn how normal people react with Tooties. Encourage your staff to take the Tootie equipment home on weekends to try on themselves and the neighborhood's normal children and adults. You should do it also. It's lots of fun and you will become much better at using Tooties in the office where time is money.
Tootie Launcher
Even though the Tootie Toss captures people's imagination the quickest it is very important to always introduce the Tootie Launcher first if you have the time. Don't even let them see the Toss. The Launcher is by far one of our most effective tools in developing the brain and the visual system. One of the secrets is not to teach them to catch but to set up the proper condition for them to learn how on their own. This gives lots of useful practice to the visual system and the brain as well. If you show the child how to catch, he does become a good catcher quickly but you have lost the advantage of his learning to learn and exercising his vision and brain to the maximum available. In observing the visual system via the use of Tooties you will also see that much of a child's problem is how the brain is interpreting the visual stimuli and that the brain itself is where we need to place some emphasis. Start out by asking the patient to place a Tootie on the end of the Launcher and jump on the other end. Observe if they use one or both feet and how effectively. Don't criticize or correct them if they place it on the wrong end but welcome that as an opportunity to observe how their listening, visualizing and thinking is working. If they jump or stomp on the wrong end and nothing happens, praise them for making a good jump and ask them to do it again. See how many times it takes before they start thinking and place the Tootie at the correct end. Don't congratulate them then but wait till the Tootie flies in the air and then praise them. This is the positive reinforcement or feedback they need and will lead to more trying. Observe if they make any attempt to catch and if they use inappropriate amounts of force by launching too hard or too soft. How long does it take them to figure out the correct force and are they reasonably consistent once they have discovered the correct force? Notice which foot they used. Later ask them to try the other foot and see how they adjust. It should improve fairly quickly even though they may still prefer the first foot.
When they finally catch a Tootie tell them to put another color Tootie on the end of the launcher and put the Tootie they just caught in front of the new Tootie (closer to them). Now with two Tooties they have to learn the correct force all over again besides keeping track of two objects moving in the air. When both are caught they continue with 3, then 4 up to a possible 22 Tooties at once. Normally an average child will be able to catch his age in Tooties. "That's great, do it again" is an appropriate comment for almost anything they do and does not give away any information that they should be gathering from the stimuli presented. When a child is catching well with either right or left hand you may want to add the use of prisms. The possibilities are lateral prisms, ie. bases out or in, and bases left or right yoked and vertical, ie. bases up or down yoked. Dr. William Nielson, O.D., in Seattle devised some very effective techniques using prisms. Read the manual on the Tootie Launcher for more specific details as there are all kinds of great uses for this device. Allow the child to invent his own games at home besides practicing the specific procedures you will be recommending.
Should the parents decide to purchase a Launcher for home use, even though you might temporarily loan them one, it is important that they get at least Set #3 which consists of two launchers and two dozen Tooties. Taking turns is very ineffective for two or more children so with two launchers the patient can invite a friend over to practice together. It makes it much more fun, it challenges, it is much better for the patient and opens the door for even more referrals. Actually the parents should order Set #4 which is the same as #3 but includes the vital Tootie Toss and saves money in the long run. Set #7c is even better as it includes a Tootie Bounce. Optometrists who wish to stock three or more sets are entitled to a 30% discount. This will be a service so that parents can get started immediately instead of ordering from us.
Tootie Toss
The same philosophy of teaching described above applies to the use of the Tootie Toss. Don't tell the child to catch. Have him stand, kneel or sit about five feet in front of the Toss and throw overhand at the net. Watch to see if they can predict the outcome and trajectory and if they use appropriate force. How long after they start catching successfully does it take them to learn that the most effective way to catch is with the fingers of the hand pointed toward the ceiling and not toward the net? When successful with the dominant hand allow them to try the other until they are successful again. When they can throw and catch consistently Dr. Lipkis recommends adding a metronome to make their performance even more efficient by throwing on every beat or every other beat, etc. You or your assistant should be positioned so that you can look directly at their eyes since it is important when using any of our VT devices to monitor where the patient looks. We feel it is better not to suggest that the child track the Tootie but let it happen on its own with lots of practice at home. If you make him aware of his loss of fixation and attempt to improve his tracking directly you will be successful but the child is not as likely to internalize the process. So please let him learn on his own with the Tooties at home and you monitor his progress at the office to get better results and save the parents money. Please give lots of genuine praise at the right time as well as placing a Tootie Sticker on their chest for each success. A supply is furnished with each Tooties Set.
Tootie Bounce & Different Kinds of Tooties
We have many other Tootie devices for brain development but only a few more that are really useful for VT. The most valuable is the Tootie Bounce which is for bilateral training. It is a smaller net that is held horizontally between both hands and the Tootie is bounced in the middle. Its use can be easy or difficult depending on which kind of Tootie is used. Tooties are available in different sizes, weights and internal textures. Some are large and heavy, some are large and light, and some are small and heavy, etc. The mismatch of visual size and feel or weight teaches computing of differences and how to compensate with appropriate movements. The Tootie Bounce may be ordered as Set 6c which includes four Tooties. After your Tooties program is running well we recommend ordering Set 1g which is a carton of 72 Tooties of three different weights. Remind us and we will substitute some of the more expensive, different weight Tooties at no extra cost so you can evaluate them with your patients. They are the same size but vary in weight, feeling and bouncing characteristics as well as being more difficult to catch. Remember our goal is to help people, through optometrists, and the use of Tooties to eliminate visually-related learning disabilities. We propose to show you how easy it is to help learning disabilities when you have Tooties and couple them with a good VT program. Office-directed but home-executed VT programs now become practical and profitable.
Tootie Squirter
Another device that is extremely popular and effective for visual and brain development is the Tootie Squirter. We sold thousands to many optometrists but once we filled the need the orders slowed down and we discontinued production. Someday we may start up again when there is enough demand. So, all optometrists who have Tootie Squirters, be sure you take good care of them and don't loan them out. The Tootie Squirter is a hand held device that when you squeeze the handle, a Teeny Tootie jumps out of its hammock-like bed into the air and does a somersault. The trick is to use your vision, hand, timing and brain to get the Teenie Tootie to land back in its bed and catch it at that moment by releasing the squeeze on the handle at just the right time. Normal six year olds can learn to do it a hundred times consecutively. It is very exciting and self-rewarding. As with other Tootie devices either one or both eyes may be occluded.
How Can Brain Development Center Help You?
There are many ways we can help you but one is via our ads in national media that urge parents to get visual checkups for their children at optometrists qualified to use Tooties. If we know you use Tooties, we can recommend they see you directly but we usually have them call all the optometrists near them to see which use Tooties. It helps when your assistant can say, "Yes, of course we use Tooties." Again our purpose is not to force you to use Tooties but for you to be aware of how useful they are. After an initial visual examination all that may be necessary is for you to suggest various activities to be performed at home with Tooties and that you provide follow-up in the event that they need additional help. Even optometrists who do not do VT should know about Tooties and have at least Set 7c or 4, even if only for use in their own home.
Another way in which we can help is via the schools. Millions of children have used Tooties in schools all over the nation in the past 23 years. Las Vegas, Nevada with about 60 elementary schools spends over a million dollars a year on their Tooties program. The school district in San Antonio, Texas has excellent video movies of Tooties in use. Teachers are delighted with the excellent results that can be obtained. When we visit schools, from elementary to college, we see lots of students who need help with their vision. They may be able to see clearly but it is the control and functioning of their vision that leaves something to be desired. Send us the name and address of your local school district so that we can send some literature. If possible, give us the name of a dynamic teacher or administrator who is in search of excellence and not afraid to try new things. If a school doesn't have Tooties, let us know. Don't worry about money. Tooties are so fantastic they will usually find the money no matter how desperate they seem to be. Parents will often chip in to get Tooties for their child's class. Service clubs might be willing to purchase Tooties for the school district. When they start with Tooties we expose them to the importance of vision and the need to bring in a vision consultant (an optometrist) to teach the teachers how to look for possible visual problems that interfere with learning.
If possible, we might even get the school nurse on your side if she is still not stuck on the Snellen chart at 20 feet. Ask the AOA or OEP how to convince school nurses and gain excellent publicity. We have excellent newspaper articles on why Tooties are so important in schools. It would be great if the local optometrists could be named as stressing the importance of vision. Offer to do a free screening at school. Get together with other ODs to concentrate on one school at a time or each do a school near their practice. Don't make a big project at first. All you really need is Tooties and you can spot all kinds of visual problems. The children will love you because you make learning fun. When you get ready, write to us and we can tell you how to screen lots of children effectively in one day. We screen 60 children every 20 minutes for a total of 600 per day which is 3,000 per week. It doesn't take many weeks to really know what you are doing and we have over 28 years of experience.
Schools everywhere use Tooties. Offer to show them how to use them more effectively and how to use them to spot visually-directed problems. It might be a good idea to concentrate on the learning disabled (LD) children at first. Later, when you evaluate normal children, you will find many who could use help to be more efficient.
If you do visit a school, don't lecture too much but demonstrate by asking for a group of 12 - 15 children. While they are having fun with Tooties you spot the visual problems and point them out to the teachers and parents. Then have the children sit and read so you can see their near point vision in action and critique. Now the parents and administrators will want you to screen the whole school. Later you can bring in instruments as necessary. Remember, at first only help a small group until you become a real expert. That way you can get by with only Set #4 or 7c and still get good results.
Recent Optometry Graduates
We can help young ODs just starting. Tell us about yourself and your practice, where you went to college and which optometry college. Did they teach you anything about Tooties? How much do you know about visual training (VT)? Have you ever taken a course from one of the great masters still teaching such as Getman, Hendrickson, Apell or Streff? If your budget is very low, as is usual with those getting started, the patient can get the Tooties and you can learn while teaching them. We can show you how. Before you can really be effective with LD children you need to practice lots with normal children to understand that their visual system leaves a lot of development to be desired.
Parents are willing to spend all kinds of money to help their children and yet so many optometrists, well qualified technically, have few practical ideas on how to tap this enormous potential. Let us show you how. Teachers need to be trained on how to identify and refer students needing visual care to you. The purpose of this booklet is to show you how easy it is. Naturally you will make money, and so will we, but our main goal is to help the millions of children who need to develop their vision better.
Many of the problems with LD children are caused by parents, unknowingly, and usually are a combination of many causes requiring very expert help in order to resolve. During early childhood the child's visual system, as well as many of their other systems, was not allowed or encouraged to develop adequately. If every child, for example, played ping pong, threw rocks at bottles on a fence and ran in the woods, they would have developed their visual system more. Added to this lack of development of visual control are all kinds of psychological problems. That is why it is not enough to just solve the visual problems. In conjunction with your expertise we work on the total problem. Even parents with lots of money who think that they are doing everything just right find that when we evaluate their children we still find lots of weaknesses. Our national ads encourage parents of "normal and perfect" children to have us evaluate their children and one of our conditions is that they see a qualified optometrist first who will send us a copy of his vision analysis.
VAKT
Many of you have studied the VAKT approach. This involves the following sensory systems: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactual. The Tooties system is designed to embrace all of these and to achieve excellent results quickly. Let us give an example of a college girl catching 21 Tooties at once from the Tootie Launcher. For many years 21 Tooties was the world's record won by Tracy Lord at age 19 in Atlanta, Georgia. The present world's record is 22, achieved in 1984 by a beautiful young woman, Malin Swartling, age 19, in Sweden. Most children can catch their age in Tooties up to 15. That is the point where the champions start because 15 or more is very difficult. Most adults with determination can get up to nine except for athletic coaches who have trouble getting past six. The problem with the coaches, who are quite athletic, is that they tend to use their brawn rather than their eyes and brains and try to catch the Tooties in sandwich fashion which is obviously more difficult. The world's champion for that method is a young college man, Ross Wentworth, when he caught 11 in February of 1984 and learned the skill in a relatively very short time. Ross is very fast, quite smart, very determined and doesn't mind failing.
Launcher and VAKT
In loading 21 Tooties on the launcher the student uses the visual system to make sure that the Tooties are lined up in a straight row. If the row curves, then obviously when the Tooties come down they won't come down in a straight line so the job of catching them becomes more complicated. The tactual and auditory come into play during the loading as there are usually several different kinds (weights) of Tooties which all look alike but require tactual and auditory discrimination to identify them and to decide where they should be placed in the line of Tooties on the launcher.
Now the kinesthetic system takes over for it is important to hit the launcher hard enough to get all the Tooties (almost 8 lbs.) up in the air but yet not too high or they will separate. While in the air and during the catching all of the systems are operating at once and intertwined. The visual system predicts the path of the falling Tooties and tracks the trajectory while guiding the whole body and kinesthetic system which gets the hands in position and the auditory and tactual start with the catching. During a good catch the sound of 21 Tooties plopping one after another into your hands is a great feeling and feedback for vision. Imagine a tower of Tooties about two feet long and spaced apart in the air. Many students make the mistake of using the central vision of their eyes to guide their hands rather than using their kinesthetic sense and their peripheral vision. Thus the eyes are not available to watch all the falling Tooties. Good peripheral vision is one of the essentials for knowing where your body is in time and space. It is a beautiful sight to watch a human with all their faculties operating at peak performance. So when you use Tooties you are helping your patient with much more than just vision. You are helping the patient to integrate and use all the systems, guided by vision. It also teaches them that it is fun to fail providing you learn something and try again until you succeed. Now the patient learns to apply these skills to his school work and not give up when he first fails to find the solution to a difficult problem.
Toss and VAKT
The Tootie Toss is more difficult to evaluate in terms of VAKT but here is a small sample. It is very effective in integrating all the aspects of VAKT together at once. The patient throws a Tootie at the net and it bounces back at him very quickly. Depending on whether the Tootie Toss is upside down, which is the very fast mode, it makes a big difference on how the patient reacts. First of all, their vision tells them how far away the Tootie Toss is. The tactual and kinesthetic help identify the kind of Tootie (weight, size, inner texture, etc.) so in combination with distance he thinks he knows how hard to throw. Throw too hard and it becomes more difficult. Too light and the trajectory becomes distorted. Using all of the senses he tries to get the Tootie to hit the net flat for a uniform return but is ready if it suddenly decides to turn to one side or up or down as it bounces back. One becomes alert or else. In fact we can take almost any woman who believes she is uncoordinated and dramatically improve her movement skills, in hands, feet, and total body movement in a few hours. It is amazing how quickly humans can improve when given the right opportunity with Tooties.
You, as an optometrist, are better qualified than most at helping children with learning disabilities especially if you know how to take advantage of the benefits of Tooties. You know that vision is dominant and its importance. You can improve the quality of your practice with a minimum investment of time and money and at the same time improve your volume. Each satisfied patient becomes an enthusiastic patients and is a great potential for more referrals. Tooties are very catchy (contagious, attractive, etc.) so when former patients continue to use them other people will ask about them and your name will be suggested. Not having Tooties in stores is a great advantage so people will have to see you to find out about them and get superior visual care at the same time.
Don't hesitate to write or call if we can help you, (310) 643-9882, but write also.
In a nutshell our personalized help service works like this.
You examine the patient and send us a brief report. You go ahead with glasses or contacts and any other treatment indicated. We send the parents a questionnaire along with some specific comments based on your analysis and recommendations. With that information we offer the parents several options depending on their interest and resources. If the best treatment is desired, we fly to your city and visit in the patient's home and live in a nearby hotel while we are literally working with the patient on a nearly 24 hour a day basis for five days. There are many different options depending on the circumstances. When advisable we take the patient away on a driving trip for a few days to get him out of the environment of his parents and friends. In some cases a chaperone may be advisable. If the child is doing poorly in school, then it doesn't hurt when we take him out of school for that time. The improvements in achievement are worth the loss of school time. During the training we work with the parents to find a suitable young person (college or high school) who lives nearby so we can train them to do the follow-up when we leave and to see that your advice on optometric visual training practice is followed up. Normally we recommend six months or more of follow up visual training which includes what we have done with Tooties.

City of Hope
Rehabilitation Exercises with Tooties
Summary: One of the most important aspect of Tooties is in the motivation of the patient to want to do things and get better. Some of these patients, especially children are very difficult as they don't know what is going on and have sort of given up.
One of the key roles of the therapist is to make the patient enjoy the visit so much they can hardly wait until the next visit. Therapists have a very difficult but important job and Tooties can make it much better and easier. It takes a little while to be creative in the use of Tooties but follow the instructions here and modify them to suit your needs. Be sure to read the cautions below as it is important not to create any problems. When you come up with applications that work well with your patients write them up to share with your colleagues and send a copy to Dr. John M. Hanson for review and publication world wide with your name. Send to: Brain Development Center, 5328 W. 142nd Place, Hawthorne, Calif. 90250 USA Telephones 310 643-9882, fax 643-8559 If you have any special applications and need some advice feel free to send a fax with all the details and the best time to reach you if an urgent reply is desired.
There are a number of types of Tootie equipment such as the Tootie Toss, Tootie Launcher, Tootie Bounce and Tootie Squirter, etc. These can be very stimulating which is very useful for motivating patients but be cautious as sudden movements could cause problems with indwelling tubes. That is why we recommend starting out with quiet movements.
Cautions:
A: Catheters and other Hookups
Tooties can create a wide variety of emotions and response. Be sure not to overdo. Start gradually with the very quiet activities and build up as possible. For patients with Hickman catheters and other connections be especially careful not to provoke any sudden movements.
Don't use Tooties in such a way that they could hit tubes and equipment connected to patient or to knock things off of tables.
B: Amount of activity or excitement
Check with the nurse or doctor as there may be limits as to how much activity is acceptable and desired. Be conservative. Doctors and nurses are very busy people and may not know much about Tooties so explain their potential when there is time. Teamwork is essential. Explain that Tooties can be very quiet and subtle when applied properly.
C: Sterilization
Tooties may be sterilized in a number of ways. The most effective is baking them in an oven for 20 to 30 minutes at an appropriate temperature to kill any organisms. Usually 180 to 200 degrees F is sufficient and almost all Tooties with take this without any problems. Arrange neatly in a flat pan to insure even heat distribution. Regular Tooties, those that weigh 150 grams and make noise when squeezed may be heated to 300 degrees F. Smoothy Tooties may also take that temperature but could burn you if squeezed when hot as they transfer heat much faster than regular Tooties.
Tooties may also be autoclaved but then must be dried so when possible use the oven method. Don't use Tooties in a microwave as the heating is too unpredictable. Tooties may also be sprayed with disinfectant and perfume added for patients whose smell senses are working. The nylon net bag should also be sterilized and washed from time to time.
Tooties may be hand washed when necessary to remove accidental patient discharges. Rinse well to remove detergent and dry in an oven at about 200 degrees F which will also sterilize them.
Quiet Applications:
A: Tower Building Required: 20 to 30 Tooties
Almost anyone can build a tower of 17 Tootie high when the Tooties are crisscrossed but some people who tend to be careless have troubles at about ten. Watch to see if the tower consistently falls to the left or right or forward or backward. That gives a clue as to how their visual system is working and whether they can use that failure mechanism to improve. Some don't learn from their mistakes and repeat the same mistakes over and over again. The world's record crisscross is used to be 46 by sixth grade students in Torrance, California but in 1989 a ten year old Dutch girl named Hanneke got up to 52. Normal, sharp college students have difficulty after 30.
If the tower is on a bed you may want to use a book as a stable base. This mode may be used even for very weak patients who are laying on their side. Sometimes the therapist might build the tower and let the patient knock it down using an appropriate part of their body that is free to move. If the patient can sit up in bed, an eating table over the bed might be the best place to build the towers. A more difficult tower is stacking them directly upon each other.
Even more difficult but very pretty is stacking them on edge and crosswise. The most difficult is stacking them end to end and crosswise is essential.
If the patient is mobile and not hooked up to anything you or they can stack them on each other's heads. With very unresponsive patients I often put one on their head very gently and ask if they can move gently to make it fall off. Repeat as many times as necessary until they can do it easily. Be sure to give lots of praise each time. As you get up to six Tooties crisscross on their head you will notice they have to hold their heads quite steady before being given the command to let them fall. You can do the same on their shoulders, tummy, chest, elbows, back of their hands, feet, etc.
B: Different Sizes
While there are many different sizes of Tooties all are designed so that if they fall on bare toes they won't hurt. Most of the applications are with size one Tooties which are about four inches long, 2.5 inches wide and about .75 inches thick. Size ten Tooties are about the size of a human baby and can weigh from 3.5 lbs to well over ten lbs and yet don't hurt when dropped on bare toes.
C: Weight Training
When it is appropriate to strengthen muscles the larger Tooties are very useful. Most of the time size 3 and 5 Tooties in different weights are the best with possible one or two of the size ten Tooties. Often you can achieve similar results just with regular Tooties in the nylon net back. Just add more Tooties when you want to increase the weight. Keeping records is very useful for patients also as they can see how long they were able to hold five lbs. of Tooties at arms length. Each day they might hold it for a longer number of seconds or with more weight.
Slight Movement Therapy
Req'd: 12 Tooties and small bucket.
You have already done a little of this when a patient is asked to let a Tootie fall off their head or other parts of their bodies. Have patient move Tooties from their head to their tummy or knee, etc. and to even further distances. If the patient is ambulatory and not connected to any tubes they might walk with a Tootie on their head from one point to another. Repeat with two or more Tooties. Children love this exercise so give them lots of praise.
Have patient hold Tootie in air and then drop it into a bucket that is directly below their hand. Repeat till all the Tooties are used. Ask the patient to hold their hand even higher. If patient can stand have them place a Tootie on head and then drop it in the bucket. One of the secrets of all these techniques is repetition. Almost always repeat the exercises many times, at least until the patient can do the exercise with complete confidence. There is a tendency for the therapist to think the patient is bored and switch from one exercise too soon. Try to motivate patient to continue. Universities and schools have similar problems with basic educational skills by pushing the student to advance before they achieve a strong foundation at a particular level. Schools think they have to do this or they would never advance but many students suffer. One of the fundamentals of our brain development success is to go back and find areas where the student is weak and fill them in. So when working with patients please give them strong foundations so they won't feel shaky when they advance.

Returns - Free Exchange - New Tooties for Old:
Summary: No matter how old your Tooties are nor if they are damaged or not they will be replaced free. No receipts or proof of purchase is necessary. Even if they are just dirty you get new ones. We even replace the competition's bags.
Free Exchange for Worn or Damaged Tooties Date _____________
Dear
Thanks for returning ____ Tooties to us for exchange and
saving as much as possible of the Tootie Crystals for analysis.
This provides a valuable quality control service so that our
products keeping getting better and better and keeping costs
down.
To save your time and ours always include your check with
the shipment of Tooties. At the moment we charge only $7
shipping and handling for each Tootie to be exchanged. If you
return 12 or more the charge is only $5 per Tootie to be replaced
free.
Please take the time to tell us how you use your Tooties and
how much you and the children like them and do they really
produce excellent results? Do you have any favorite uses we can
publish to help others and give you credit?
As you know our guarantee of free replacement contains none
of the unreasonable limits of other manufacturers such as an
original copy of your receipt, proof of purchase and time limits,
etc. The purpose of this marvelous guarantee is to encourage you
to use your Tooties as much as possible and not be worried that
they will be damaged. Hopefully you buy lots of Tooties since
you know they are guaranteed forever. The secret of Tooties is
quantity. Homes with small children should have at least 500 to
3,000 Tooties if you want the best development for your child.
Schools should have about 5,000 distributed among the classrooms
with the lower grades getting most. For special projects they
can all be brought together at once for fantastic learning
opportunities. Optometric and other therapy offices should have
at least 300 and possibly 800 for the best results. Just to
build one igloo takes about 150 Tooties and Tootie roads across
the room take three Tooties per foot of room size & not much
happens when the child gets to built only one road so be sure to
have lots of Tooties and an assortment of types so child can
learn to sort them by weight, texture and color, etc.
We accept any Tooties for replacement, even new ones of a
color or type you don't prefer. We would appreciate a reason for
your request and hopefully you won't use the term defective as
that is very rare after 38 years of manufacturing Tooties.
When a hole or tear appears in a Tootie it is often a
puncture such as when throwing against a Tootie Toss open "S"
hook holding the springs. All "S" hooks should be bent closed at
both ends as per the instructions and for the safety of the
children. Please check yours and bend closed with pliers.
Be sure to return as much of the Tootie Crystals as possible
and put each Tootie in a sealed plastic bag so the crystals don't
get mixed. We examine the crystals under a microscope so we can
determine how much the Tooties were used and when they were
manufactured. We also check to see if the damage is to the woof
or warp threads as well as the seams.
Please send $ ______ for replacements. ($7 x ____ Tooties)
Sincerely,
Vicky Hamilton

Special Tooties
of
Smoothies, Floaties,
Yaggies
& Dreamies, etc.
Special Tooties
All Tooties are special. Some are just more special than
the regular standard Tooties. One of the purposes of Tooties is
to teach discrimination. It could be useful to mark one of each
type with its name and weight, etc. and keep separate from the
other Tooties as a way of identifying with certainty. We have
over a hundred different types of Tooties in Size 1 which is our
basic size. This size is comfortable in one's hand and is
designed so that three Tooties end to end equal one foot and ten
end to end equal one meter more or less. Regular Tooties weigh
151 grams so that three equals one pound. Tweenie Tooties are
100 grams so that ten equal one kilogram.
Mix a dozen Smoothies and a dozen Floaties together and time
the student to see how long it takes to separate the Tooties into
two groups. This should be very easy as Floaty Tooties are about
half the weight of Smoothies. Do this several times and keep a
record of the times to see if student is improving. Now add a
different weight such as a Dreamy Tootie. Have a scale handy so
student can check his or her own results. It is very useful to
have both an analog and a digital scale capable of weighing up to
300 grams. In either case the student should put it on so gently
that no sound is heard and with practice they can be gentle and
still fast. Now you can add a dozen of another weight and
continue.
Dreamy Tooties and Yaggie Tooties are of the same 125 gram
weight so if you use those the student must discriminate by sound
or by touch unless they can memorize the colors. Some Tooties
are just much more exotic to touch and handle. To check the
sounds hold one up to your ear and squish around the Tootie
Crystals inside. Some Tooties have different Tootie Crystals at
each end so be sure to listen to both ends. When used with the
Tootie Toss which bounces them back to you or with the Tootie
Bounce which bounces them vertically for optimum binocular
performance you can often hear the difference as they bounce.
Some are easy to catch and some very difficult depending on
the speed so have your students classify them in that way also.
Try stacking the Tooties crisscross at least 17 high or more.
When writing for other uses tell us what you have done
already and how it has worked out. That way our experts can help
you better. If you come up with some new uses please let us know
so that we can add them to our literature to help others.

lograr algo si sabes hacerlo y has tenido mucha experiencia.
Todos los jovenes que est n en o acuden a la universidad deben
aprovechar esta t‚cnica.
El famoso Profesor Hanson, conocido en todo el mundo por sus
logros tan effectivos, invent¢ una t‚cnica que se llama en
ingles, QET (Quick Effective Therapy) o Terapia Efectiva Rapida.
materiales did cticos llamado Tooties.
haber enviadala chica mucho m s antes.

Brain Development Center -Creative Ideas, PE - PE Teachers # 1: Summary:
Tells all kinds of ways to
use Tooties with students of various ages. Many exercises are
just with Tooties and some with the Tootie Launcher.
Extra Tootie Instructions
for sophisticated PE teachers
Warm Up: Do your regular stretching exercises. If possible,
equip each student with a Tootie. After stretching various ways
put the Tootie crosswise on their head and try to sit down,
ending up Indian style, without using their hands. Then try to
stand up again and not using hands. Repeat several times to give
a child a little practice.
Slightly Dynamic Exercises: Students put a Tootie crosswise
on their head, cup their hands at their belly button and keep
them there while they try to catch the Tootie in their hands with
their eyes closed. The smarter kids will tilt the upper half of
their body slightly backwards and then tilt their head forward.
Try to avoid teaching but repeat a number of times to give each
student time to figure it out on her own. Always start with eyes
closed and once proficient they can try with eyes open. Repeat
but this time they put their hands behind their back and are
allowed to move hands away from body if desired. The successful
kids will normally tilt the upper part of their body slightly
forward and then tilt their head backward. Kids feel so good
when they can do these exercises.
More Active Dynamic Exercises: Don't tell the kids this but
the goal is to exercise their cardiovascular system by jumping
about 500 times. It also uses up some of their energy so they
are more controllable. Tell the kids that you are going to give
them something really difficult to do. Of course it will
actually be very easy. You ask "Can everybody do it?" followed
by "Would you like something harder?" Eventually you will get to
the hard exercises.
Procedure: Have them put the Tootie under right armpit and
jump 25 times. Then under left armpit. Then in crook of each
elbow. Then in each hand held high above their head. Then
between their knees. The next ones are progressively more
difficult but kids feel great when then can do them. Now hold
one against your waist with right elbow, the left. Then under
the chin. Each time they fail they start over from one. So far
this is about ten events so they will have jumped at least 250
times. You can invent or ask the kids to invent other ways such
as holding the Tootie behind their back with one hand.
Between their ankles is quite difficult for many at first so
for those who can't do it allow them to repeat some of the
earlier exercises of their own choice. These exercises work with
almost all ages but allow flexibility of choice if they can't do
the harder exercises. Tell children to add the word "yet" to any
statement that says "I can't do it". The next difficult step is
to hold the Tootie in the crook of each knee which means they
have to jump with the other leg.
Exercising Discipline: They start with a Tootie on their head
and jump so the Tootie leaves their head about one inch and it
stays on head when they stop. It is essential to stop between
each jump and they are not allowed to adjust the Tootie with
their hands. Then they jump and stop again each time trying to
get the Tootie back on the center of their head. The goal is to
do this ten times without failing in between. Most six year olds
can do this after a little practice. The discipline comes in by
remembering to stop each time and not touch the Tootie which
might be off to one side of head.
Supple Movements: Now have them toss a Tootie under their
right leg using their right arm. Allow them to catch with both
or either hand. It gets harder when they have to catch with the
same hand. Repeat with tossing from right hand under left leg.
The goal is to do it ten times without an error. Then repeat by
using the left hand. This shows kids they can use both sides of
their body reasonably well.
Don't tell them that the secret is to toss the Tootie
vertically and close to their body. Allow them to learn on their
own and let them laugh at their early lack of control. Remember
that the goal of Tootie teaching is to teach them to deal with
failure by not giving up, to laugh at their dumb mistakes and
keep trying so that this attitude carries over into their
academic work. Soon they will start using their brain more and
anticipating what causes failure so they can avoid failing when
important not to fail. The idea is to learn to fail with Tooties
so they don't fail with other things.
Tootie Launcher: One of the problems with many kids is that
they have always been taught to be successful so they can't deal
with failure. Thus they give up after even just one try and say
they can't do that. The Tootie Launcher is designed to allow
children to fail hundreds of times and not feel badly because
they can see that they were quite close to catching whatever
their goal is.
Start a child off with one Tootie on the Launcher and allow
her to repeat as many times as she likes. When ready for two she
puts a new color on the blinking eye and moves the previous
Tootie slightly toward her. When she is comfortable with
catching two then she puts a new color on the eye and moves the
others closer to her. It is very important to maintain the same
color sequence each time because as in spelling it is important
that letters are in the right order. Three is quite hard at
first for many people, even adults, until they figure out that
the hands should be cupped together and put under the lowest
Tootie. Allow them to discover this on their own. We are not
teaching catching Tooties but teaching their brain to solve
problems which can be useful in other things and life. We don't
care how bad they are as long as they keep getting better.
Once they can catch three it is easy to catch four and then
five, etc. At five and higher they are allowed to overlap the
Tooties. Most children can catch their age after several hours
beginning at about age three or four. For some young children
you can help them get started by holding a basket or bucket in
their hands.
For those kids eight and older who can bounce a Tootie on
their head ten or more times there is a very exciting exercise.
You can even keep score and put their names on a bulletin board.
They put one Tootie on the blinking eye and launch it so that it
lands on the top of their head. (not the forehead). Eight is the
magic age for this to work. At first most of kids will think it
is too hard but their first goal is just to hit their head. This
lets them know where their head is in space. Soon it will stay
longer and longer til finally it stays and child feels fantastic.
Along the way the child can feel he or she is getting closer and
closer to success.
Don't tell the kids but the secret is to launch the Tootie
just as high as they are tall and at the exact moment it stops
rising it is stopped so then they put their head under it. For
those who need help we sometimes use a sailor hat which allows an
easier success. Another secret for beginners is to use TTT
(Tootie Tongue Tracking) where the child points his tongue at it
until almost the last moment. In academic circles this is called
tongue steering of vision and may be observed with many children
when they are writing. Once their eyes get good they don't need
their tongue any more. College girls are amazed at how well TTT
works. You are welcome to call Dr. Tootie anytime you have
questions or need more ideas.
Counting Tooties Assign two or three kids to count Tooties
before and after each class. The best way is to line them up on
the floor end to end with five in a row. Every five rows you
leave a space of one Tootie width. Each group will have 25 plus
a group of extras. That way not so many will disappear into
kid's pockets as kids will police each other and look for missing
Tooties. Kids will become good at counting, working together and
arranging Tooties neatly and quickly in rows. Each session you
can pick a different group of kids.
Creative Ideas, PE 2 - For Teachers with Kids:
Summary: Why teachers should
take Tooties home to use with their own kids or other kids they
know so they can have plenty of time to observe a small group.
Getting the Most out of your Tooties
for All Teachers with Kids
Take Tooties Home: Taking Tooties home overnight or over the
weekend has the potential for getting much better results at
school. There your kids will have plenty of time to really enjoy
each of the Tootie games. If you have time to react with them
you can improve their math, science and reading skills. Then at
school you will have the skills to help any of your students much
more effectively. Be sure to get the principal's approval.
Tooties and Tootie equipment are very durable so there is no
danger of using the Tooties too much. Besides, the Tootie Bags
are guaranteed forever and any returned in any condition will be
replaced free for only a $5 handling and shipping charge for each
Tootie to be replaced. Don't bring everything home at once
because it is more effective to concentrate on one at a time.
Some possible suggestions: Tooties alone, as many as possible.
Tootie Toss and two Tooties, Two Tootie Launchers and 24 Tooties
so a friend can share.
Slightly Dynamic Exercises: Students put a Tootie crosswise
on their head, cup their hands at their belly button and keep

kids will normally tilt the upper part of their body slightly
forward and then tilt their head backward. Kids feel so good
when they can do these exercises.
Another fun, quiet exercise if you bring all the Tooties
home is to load up the child with as many Tooties as they can
hold in their arms plus on the shoulders, head, etc. It works
best when you, a sibling or a friend does the loading. Then the
participants take turns. Children love this but we haven't been
able to figure out any academic benefits. If you can think of
any be sure to share them with us. Also see how high they can
build a criss cross Tootie Tower.
More Active Dynamic Exercises: Don't tell the kids this but
the goal is to exercise their cardiovascular system by jumping
about 500 times. It also uses up some of their energy so they
are more controllable. Tell the kids that you are going to give

stays on head when they stop. It is essential to stop between

get the Tootie back on the center of their head. The goal is to
do this ten times without failing in between. Most six year olds
can do this after a little practice. The discipline comes in by
remembering to stop each time and not touch the Tootie which
might be off to one side of head.

Tootie Launcher: One of the problems with many kids is that
they have always been taught to be successful so they can't deal

they can't do that. The Tootie Launcher is designed to allow
children to fail hundreds of times and not feel badly because
they can see that they were quite close to catching whatever
their goal is. At home the Tootie Launcher is great for
increasing attention span as you have plenty of time. Any child
over 4 or 5 can easily spend two or three hours or more on the
Launcher. All you have to do is motivate them now and then,
especially when they succeed.
Have them write the color
sequence on paper which is normally face down except when
necessary to check. This helps them improve their sequencing
memory. Three is quite hard at first for many people, even
adults, until they figure out that the hands should be cupped
together and put under the lowest Tootie. Allow them to discover
this on their own. We are not teaching catching Tooties but
teaching their brain to solve problems which can be useful in

they keep getting better.
Once they can catch three it is easy to catch four and then
five, etc. At five and higher they are allowed to overlap the
Tooties. Most children can catch their age after several hours
beginning at about age three or four. For some young children
you can help them get started by having them hold a basket or
bucket in their hands. Young children could jump with both feet
if they wish.
Catching a Tootie on one's head from the
Launcher is much easier than tossing it under their leg and
catching on their head. Tossing it from their toe is easier than
from under their leg. When your kids get good at this, it boosts
their self-esteem tremendously and they can show their classmates
at school.
Counting Tooties Have your kids count all the Tooties before
and after each use. When you have many Tooties the best way is
to line them up on the floor end to end with five in a row.
Every five rows you leave a space of one Tootie width. Each
group of Tooties will have 25 plus a group of extras. That way
not so many will disappear into kid's pockets as kids will police
each other and look for missing Tooties. Kids will become good
at counting, working together and arranging Tooties neatly and
quickly in rows. With more than one child take turns counting.

Congratulations
on getting a Tootie.
They are lots of fun to squeeze and
fiddle with while on the phone or in meetings and make excellent
gifts for any age, even infants. They have many wonderful uses
depending on the type and have been used by millions around the
world for over 32 years in schools, homes, hospitals and vision
training centers. How come you haven't heard of them? Walter
Cronkite has even talked about them on TV during a space launch
telling a little on how the astronauts use them. There have been
many articles in newspapers and magazines so maybe you are
quindretic just like most of us in that it is difficult to know
what you don't know. Once you know about Tooties you will begin
to hear about them often.
One of the reasons Tooties have been so successful is that
they give everyone a feeling of power, that they can do anything
they want. The Tooties System teaches powerful concentration and
for long periods of time without effort. It teaches perseverance
in spite of repeated failure. In short, it teaches you to never
give up and to use your brain to solve problems automatically at
the subconscious level.
How to use: If held in the right hand with palms up you
pull the crystals inside the Tootie down with your fingers and
use the heel of your hand to push them up on the opposite side.
Thus the crystals will rotate counterclockwise with the right
hand and vice versa with the left. Tootie Squeezing in this way
takes about a month to perfect and feels great when you can do
it. Later you can hold the Tootie any way you want while
squeezing. You can feel a wonderful, mild vibration going up
your arm as tiny amounts of piezo electricity are released.
It is very effective for golfers and tennis players to
improve their grip, concentration and performance. For hand and
arm injuries recovery is much faster. At first use a Smoothy
Tootie and as the hand gets stronger switch to a Regular Tootie
which may be heated to 300øF or 140øC to improve blood
circulation to the affected areas. Tooties are much more
effective and safer than hydroculator pads even tho Tooties
can be heated much higher. The crystals of the regular Tootie
are designed to release the heat very slowly except when
squeezed. In this way the patient can easily and safely control
the amount of dry heat. In the beginning while learning to use
them, only heat them up to about 200øF and later 250 and 300. Be
careful to only do this with Regular Tooties which have that
noisy, crunchy feeling and weigh 150 grams. You can heat
Smoothies to the same temperature but these crystals conduct heat
so fast one could easily be burned. Don't go over 120øF.
Massage with hot Tooties feels great.
Many Type of Tooties
There are many different types of Tooties and many sizes
but the most useful are Regular Tooties and a few others in size
1. Tooties of any size may be of many different weights depending
on the application. All Tooties, even 10 lbs. ones, are designed
to be safe if dropped on your bare toes or if they hit your body.
They are much safer than traditional weights and as such may be
used safely by patients in beds or wheelchairs. The company also
makes many specialized custom Tooties such as those with Velcro
or other attachment methods.
Each type of Tootie takes years to design and test in order
to produce the desired results. Tooties may look very simple but
are very difficult to duplicate. Schools and parents should
believe us and stop wasting time, money and children's
development by trying to make their own Tooties. Buy the real
Tooties and enjoy great results right away. We are always here
to help with advice to improve your results.
"Much more than little bags"
Tooties are just one part of a much larger plan in helping
people of all ages and problems. For young children, miracles
happen when you give them several hundred Tooties. Studies
indicate that a unit of 432 does wonders for children from ages 2
to 6. While older children could benefit with lots of Tooties,
usually one carton of 72 is adequate. When Tooties are used with
the Tootie Launcher, Tootie Toss or Tootie Bounce rapid
improvements in vision and coordination are possible for both
normal and handicapped children as well as those recovering from
accidents or strokes, etc. There is so much to know about
Tooties that several books have been written and now are
available in different languages.
Tooties were invented by Dr. John M. Hanson, who is also
the inventor of QET which stands for Quick Effective Therapy. It
is a series of new, powerful psychological techniques where many
kinds of psychological problems may be cured quickly instead of
taking years of costly and time consuming therapy. Not every
problem can be solved but so many it is worth investigating if
someone is interested in rapid results. And sometimes even
seemingly hopeless cases, such as brain damage from accidents,
can be substantially improved. Tooties can do miracles if
given a chance with a trained expert. QET is now available
worldwide.
With Tooties and other Tootie techniques almost any
learning disability, attention deficit disorder or hyperactivity
may be cured quickly, usually in less than a month. Imagine the
marvelous benefits and improvement in self-esteem when a student
at any level can dramatically improve their grades in a short
time. Parents should consider Tootie training for all of their
children before problems occur. No matter how perfect they may
seem, all can be improved. Parents can even do it themselves by
getting our self-teaching Tooties Set 7c for home use, only $798.
It works for all ages and lasts for years.
Lifetime Guarantee
Tooties are guaranteed unconditionally for your lifetime.
No receipt or proof of purchase is required. To get a brand new
replacement Tootie or more just send in your old ones, trying to
save as many Tootie Crystals as possible, include $5 each for
shipping and handling anywhere in the contiguous United States.
Put each Tootie in a sealed plastic bag. Include some comments
on how you like and use Tooties. Make checks or money orders

More uses for your Tootie:
1. Try spinning it very fast as you throw it up and not
very high. When you can do that, try it while extending your arm
out to the side and looking straight ahead so that your
peripheral vision is exercised. Throw it under either leg with
either arm and catch. Try all the possibilities until you are
quite skilled.

Regulars or assorted ones for only $764 per carton. $17 is the
shipping and handling cost for a carton of 72 Tooties anywhere in
contiguous U.S. Write for rates to other countries and how many
desired more than 6 cartons, min.
We also have a
Weight Sensitivity Set
which ranges from 100 to 200 grams in ten or five gram
increments. These Tooties are all the same color and student has
to arrange them in correct order. When they are sure they are
right then each is turned over to verify how well they did.
Bankers like this test for their executives as it tells quite a
bit as to how executives go about making vital decisions.
Creative Ideas, Vision - Special for
Optometrists; Summary: This is mainly for optometrists who have ordered a Tooties set but
is useful for anyone wanting to improve or maintain good vision. Using Tooties
regularly can prevent some vision problems. Special for Optometrists Thanks for ordering this Tooties Set. We are sure it will bring you lots of
good results with your patients. This year in 1992 we celebrate our 30th year of
inventing, manufacturing and selling Tooties all over the U.S. and in many other
countries. Millions of children benefit in schools and playgrounds and untold
thousands of patients improved their vision because of the enthusiasm and
dedication of optometrists like yourself. Please send us your success stories
and techniques so we can share them with others. Why have Tooties stood the test of time? Foremost they are capable of
producing fantastic results quickly. They are lots of fun and seem to last
forever because of their design and quality construction. There are many
different types of Tooties depending on the results desired. Some take as long
as seven years to invent and test but most take only three years. They are much
more complex than they appear to be so if you want good results be sure to
insist on genuine Tooties. If Tooties should ever wear out or become damaged we
will replace them free. Write for details. To get good results you need the best
and never should you ever consider using imitations since you can obtain free
replacements. There is a difference. Write if you ever have any questions. We
are here to help. If you call, try calling between 7 and 9 in the morning
California time. Try to follow with a letter if no one answers and you need to
leave a message on the answering machine. The three main devices that use Tooties are the Tootie Toss, a large net with
legs and designed to be turned upside down for a different response. The patient
stands or sits in front and throws the Tootie at the net and tries to catch it
as it returns. Each kind of Tootie responds differently. The easiest is the
regular Tootie which weighs 151 grams. The most valuable of the Tootie devices
is the Tootie Launcher which looks like a simple board to propel many Tooties in
the air at once. This is excellent for developing peripheral vision and improves
reading. The small net is called the Tootie Bounce and may be used in a number
of ways but mostly it is held horizontal with two hands and the Tootie bounced
as many times as possible vertically. Most eight year olds can do it very
easily. When possible take your Tootie Bounce to a playground or beach and
bounce the Tootie very high such as 100 feet or more. The children love it and
get exhausted very quickly. We have volumes of written material on Tooties and how to help all types of
children quickly, even seemingly hopeless cases. We can do it and so can you if
you are willing to learn. Invite an expert to address your study group or do a
session at your conventions. There is so much you can learn. If you have an IBM
computer with a 3.5" or 5.25" disk we can send you all kinds of
material for only $15 ppd. anywhere. Tell us if your drives will read 720K or
1.44 megs so we can send the right kind of disks. Sorry, we don't have any
MacIntosh ability. If you have an interesting learning disability or dyslexic, etc. patient of
any age, Professor Hanson can fly anywhere in the world to help them. Please
send complete visual analysis and other details. Most such cases can be
dramatically improved in 5 to 15 days and you can do the follow-up. Many people
still don't believe us, even with 30 years of proven success. Best results are
obtained when we work as a team with an optometrist. Your office should have at
least two sets 7c and several cartons of Tooties as quantity is critical for
success. Encourage parents to have a set 7c, even for their normal children, to
help develop vision and to keep it in peak performance. Creative Ideas Co. tel (310) 643-9882 Tooties, California fax 8559 90250 USA Overseas shipments save you money on shipping when you order at least 2 sets

Creative Ideas,
Summary: Mainly for optometrists or visual therapists who have ordered only
one dozen Tooties but useful for anyone interested in improving or maintaining
good vision. It points out the benefits of having lots of multicolored Tooties
in different weights and textures, especially for those with children under age
8. One Dozen Dear Optometrist or Visual Therapist: Thank you for ordering a dozen Tooties. We hope that these will be additions
to what you have already or merely replacements for those given to patients or
lost. If you are ordering them just to see what Tooties are as they are mentioned
quite often in conferences and in the media we hope that you won't be
disappointed and think of them only as bean bags. You need at least 12 dozen and
children in a room without adults around to begin to see the magic and the
benefits for visual development. Studies over past 30 years and many
universities indicate the real magic happens when you have a unit of Tooties
which is 432 Tooties and achieve optimum results with at least 3 units. This is
just a hypothetical number established by professors as many children could get
equally good results with just 300 but one of the secrets is quantity not to
mention all the colors, different weights and different feelings when you
squeeze the crystals inside. In fact, for homes with one or more young children
from ages one to eight it is best to have three units which is also the ideal
recommendation for a school classroom, especially Kgn thru third grade. Donate
Set 7c to your child's school. Over the years, thousands of optometrists around the world have used Tooties
with good results. The least expensive way to discover the "Magic of
Tooties" is with Tootie Launchers (Set #3) and two dozen Tooties which
works from age three thru adult. It is great fun and almost anyone can see the
advantages for visual development. In fact, if you were to do an eye motility
test on a child of about 8 to 16 and find them to be quite poor, the Tootie
Launcher can effect dramatic improvement after only three continuous hours on
the Tootie Launcher. Motivating a child to work continuously for three hours is
very hard work but is easy for us and very rewarding. It takes lots of
imagination but we are glad to offer help if you care to give us a call at (310)
643-9882 (7 to 9:am California time is best). The Launcher is easily our most
powerful developmental tool and is useful for reading, math and science as well
as vision. More obvious to the uninitiated but not quite as effective as the
Launcher is the Tootie Toss or the Tootie Bounce but several different types of
Tooties are required for best results. Every home should have Set 7c or at least
Set #3. Don't forget, Tooties are guaranteed forever and will be replaced free if
they should be damaged in any way. No proof of purchase is required. Don't you
wish all products were guaranteed this way? We believe in quality and great
results. Put the cloth and contents in a plastic bag and send to us. Should you
ever know of any child or adult with learning problems, dyslexia or recovering
from an accident we have the experience and know how to produce dramatic
improvement in a very short period of time in spite of what all the experts may
say. Be sure to send us complete results on vision and other tests as well as a
photograph and general information about the subject for a free analysis. This
can be done even before any vision training is effected and we suggest at least
six months of vision training and other follow-up at your office under our
guidance. Most learning problems can be cured dramatically in from 5 to 15 days
with our Hi Tech Psychology. Usually it is better if we fly to the student but
we have an extensive laboratory here in Los Angeles for more difficult cases. Creative Ideas,
Vision 3 - Speech for
Optometrists: Summary: While written for optometrists and their therapists it is in easy to
read language for any parent or teacher. It gives all kinds of useful ideas on
how to help children improve in everything with Tooties, even the most difficult
types of learning problems. Vision 3 Vision Forum Paper October 19, 1992 It's a pleasure to be with the optometrists and therapists who have made
Tooties such a success in helping patients over the past 30 years. Most of you
know much more than I do about vision and lenses but perhaps I can give you some
ideas on how to get even better results. When I work with patients I work with
them very intensively, usually for at least several hours but varying the
activity to keep them motivated. It is not the kind of thing that you can do in
your regular practice but by explaining the excellent results that I get it may
give you some ideas so that you can modify your traditional exercises should you
wish to. First of all I want to thank you and your profession for all you have taught
me over the past 30 years on how to use my materials to help improve vision. The
list is quite long but among the key ones were Jerry Getman and Homer
Hendrickson. Homer said that the beauty of Tooties is that it was a real world
situation not requiring the use of lenses to simulate. Getman liked the idea
that Tooties could be made lighter as they got larger which required patients to
temper what they saw with conflicting inputs from other senses. Many of you,
like Nielsen in Seattle, use prisms and anaglyph lenses to get even better
results. With the world series of baseball going on those of you into sports vision
might like to know that the Pittsburg Pirates paid an optometrist in
Pennsylvania $50,000 to improve their team's performance using Tooties enabling
them to win the world series in 1979. Other teams could be waiting for your
offer to help. Getman and Hendrickson hammered over and over again to me that eye muscles
are quite strong and that one of the major objectives is to get the brain to
exercise precise control over those muscles. Recently I helped a boy of 16 in
Holland who was doing poorly in school. My first test was a simple one of eye
motility using a Marsden ball. His eyes had very poor control. It was very hard
work but we managed to keep him on the Tootie Launcher for three hours and his
eye motility had improved dramatically. To keep this lackluster young boy going
for so long required that we find a dynamic, attractive young girl to compete
with him and it worked. Women can achieve miracles if given the opportunity and
the exercise was great for her as well. Four years ago I was in Austria to help a boy of six brain damaged since
birth. He could only say about six words, was very weak and moved as if he were
blind. I was suspicious of the lenses he was wearing so I sent him to an
optometrist of my own choice in Holland for verification. The optometrist said
that his eyes were so bad that he had no idea on where to start so I had to do
the job myself along with the parents. Within a year the boy was able to pick a
pin off the floor and incidentally speaks so well he has finished several years
of school. We also used many of the heavy ten pound Tooties to strengthen his
muscles and today he hikes into the mountains with his father. One of my favorite exercises developed to improve normal second grade
children with math has turned out to be useful for all ages including brain
damaged adults. Great results can be expected within a few hours and the
exercise tends to be self- motivating once you get them started. All that is
required is 30 Tooties of various weights but all the same standard # 1 size. In
addition you need two 500 gram scales sensitive to about a gram in analog and
digital form. Ask for details on when to use a particular scale. Finally add a
printing calculator to enter the weights of each Tootie and a stopwatch to
measure the time taken to weigh all 30 Tooties. At first the Tooties may be
loaded only with the left hand and removed with the right. As the patient gets
better they are required to make a tower of criss cross Tooties with those they
have weighed. As most of you know, Tootie towers become difficult after 17 high
so you might allow them to make two towers at first. Many studies have proved
that a reasonably sharp college student should be able to make a tower of about
30 Tooties high but the world's record in America is 46 for a 16 year old girl
and in Europe 49 for a ten year old girl. When you videotape this exercise you
can show parents how much vision is involved. Patients really like this
exercise. This weighing exercise was the favorite of a 35 year old young man whose
brain was damaged severely by disease and for six years he was told that no
improvement was possible. After five days of Tootie exercises he made a dramatic
recovery but the real results did not really show up until a month later so
parents need to be patient. Universities in America and elsewhere teach that learning disabilities
and dyslexia cannot be cured but that the student must be taught to learn to
live with his or her disability. My work has indicated the opposite, that almost
any can be cured if we work on the problem intensively and in close cooperation
with optometrists as vision is the key ingredient. I would be pleased to
collaborate with any of you on such cases. For many years I have been flying
around the world helping even the most impossible cases. While not everybody
believes me I can cure almost any learning problems in 5 to 10 days of intensive
therapy from college age down to elementary. The proof is in the results. What
works best is to have the optometrists and therapist do the follow-up after I
leave so that the patient doesn't fall back. Once or twice a week for about six
months seems to work fine, especially for patients who have a Tooties set at
home in order to practice whenever they please. The ideal case is to do a complete vision test first and then spend about an
hour watching to see how they perform with Tooties. Since the Tooties require an
integration of vision along with many other things it is difficult to isolate
just the vision part but the results of your vision tests can give more meaning
to what you observe. When you assign homework for patients with Tooties at home
they are not likely to do it. The secret is to do your office exercises in such
a manner that they are motivated on their own to practice at home so that they
can show off their improvement on the next office visit. In general, you should
spend the whole office hour of therapy on the Tootie Launcher exclusively until
the patient displays some sense of accomplishment. Normal children should be
able to catch their age in Tooties within a few sessions but don't tell them
that in the beginning. (Don't tell parents either). Therapist should be seated
low in front of the patient so that she can look into their eyes. Inner Vision: Even tho we are trying to improve
vision it helps to separate the eyesight part from how the brain interprets what
is coming in. The way that I do this is to have the patients throw and catch
with their eyes closed under controlled conditions with the Tootie Toss. It is a
very emotional experience when the patient realizes how well they can catch with
their eyes closed, sometimes better than with eyes open. When the eyes are open
many people tend to be lazy and stop using their brain. When the eyes are closed
they are forced to use their brain and are delighted when they get great
results. At first use an easy Tootie like the regular and then advance to a
Tweenie or Floaty. The X-204 is the most difficult for this exercise. Please
note that we now have over a hundred different types of Tooties. Today, each of
your were given a Yaggie and a Smoothie Tootie. Every office should have the basic set 7c and three or four cartons of
Tooties. One of the key secrets of success is to have lots of Tooties and at
least three different types. Tooties are designed to last almost forever as most
have you have discovered. Should any ever get damaged, wear out or look too
dirty you can always get free replacements with no need to prove when you bought
them. Just return them to us with $3 each for shipping and handling. With lots
of Tooties the patient can make large geometric shapes and letters on the floor
and walk on them as Dr. Kessler wrote in his paper presented many years ago at a
forum like this. Children love to make roads with Tooties. Later try to make
some straight roads across your office. Remember three Tooties end to end equal
one foot so for a 20 foot room you need at least 60 Tooties and it's best to
have enough for at least five roads so the patient can see the accomplishment.
Use a string to see if the road is straight and have him or her fix it. When
building towers have them make many all over the floor. Later they can use other
Tooties to try to knock them down. Have children make a matrix of Tooties on the
floor similar to their times tables such as five rows of ten Tooties, etc. Try not to tell children to catch but see if they do when they first use the
Launcher or Toss. Sit where you can watch their eyes as most seem to use them
quite poorly. With Tooties the improvement is quite rapid and especially if the
child has his own Tootie set at home. You teach him new procedures each visit in
the office depending on how much he or she has practiced at home. Even if they
have their own Tooties set you need lots of supervised practice in the office in
order to check how they are using their vision. Don't be afraid they will get
too good at home. There are always new exercises to teach them. If you have a
personal computer send us five dollars each for our two books on 3.5"
disks. Have the child hold out his arms and load him or her with as many Tooties
as they can carry. Have them throw one at a time at the Toss and later as fast
as they can and count how many throws in two minutes. Don't worry about
catching. They soon will discover it is faster when they catch but if they miss
they can always reach down and get another. I like to start the child in a
sitting position up quite close. As they get better they can move back. Again, I want to thank all of you optometrists and therapists for all the
good things you do for people and the help you have given me in making better
products to help people. We are in the process of establishing a computer
bulletin board so that professionals like yourself can ask questions and have
answers within hours if not immediately. In addition, parents from all over the
country and foreigners can describe the problems with their children and get
back useful help quickly. It is important that we have your name, address and
phone number in our database so that we can suggest prospective patients get a
good vision check first. Please feel free to come up to me later with any
suggestions or questions. It is best when I meet you in person as teamwork is
very important. Professor Dr. Roel de Groot of Holland will be visiting America
soon to learn more about vision. May he speak to your study group? He has
written a book on Tooties but it's only available in Dutch. Dr. John M. Hanson
Summary: The stopwatch is a very effective part of all Tootie training. Here
are some ideas on how to achieve good results. It also includes a list of
references, including books with Tooties. Vision Training Series Stop Watch Exercises with Tooties Objectives: To improve tracking from near to far,
crossing midline, concentration, timing, writing, numbers, math and
incidentally, catching and throwing. Materials: Tootie Toss Net, three different types of
Tooties with different weights such as included in Set 7c. Stop watch, pad of
lined paper, ink pen, printing calculator and later a metronome. Basic Procedure: This exercise can work with almost
any age child but is modified here for simplicity for children under six. The
child sits Indian style with her back to a wall and the Tootie Toss very close
in front, perhaps a foot away. Child measures the time to make 25 throws, enters
it into the calculator and also writes it down as trial no. 1. Don't tell her in
the beginning but she will be doing 15 trials so will end up throwing at least
375 times without realizing she is doing so many. For some kids you can specify
only ten or fifteen throws per trial. These work in any language or culture and
are lots of fun. Details: Be sure not to tell the child to catch
altho that is obviously one of our goals. If the child asks if they should catch
tell them it is not necessary but catching would speed up their time as they
don't have to pick up the Tootie. Now the child won't be worried if she misses
and can pay more attention to the timing and recording of the time. Don't be too
fussy if the child makes timing errors with the stop watch. She will get better.
After the 15 trials have her add them up if they haven't already been summed by
the printing calculator. Then divide by 15 to get the average time. Repeat the
process for trial #2 and higher. If they threw 25 times per trial then they
would have thrown 375 times. Repeat using each of the other types of Tooties.
The 150 gram regular Tootie will be the easiest to catch because the Tootie
Crystals inside tend to stick to each other. 375 times 3 types of Tooties is 1125 throws. Now have the child repeat with
other hand. This will result in a total of 2250 throws and lots of timing and
writing practice. Now, you see why it is important not to tell them to catch as
it could be difficult with the non-dominant hand. When they appear to be
catching quite well you can start all over but this time they only count the
catches. To make it even tougher you can say they have to start over when they
miss. In this case it might be better to be on a ten throw basis if their
feelings are hurt very much when they miss just before 25 and have to start
over. Other references for visual & child improvement: Creative Ideas,

other drugs. The program works for all ages and is especially effective with
normal, sharp students as it makes them much better and avoids possible future
problems. Even the best students can benefit. Materials: Tooties Set 7c. plus a carton (72 Tooties)
of at least three different types of Tooties. Other vital materials include a
Stop watch, pad of lined paper, ink pen, rulers, triangles, protractor, printing
calculator plus a ten digit scientific Casio calculator, a metronome, wrist
digital stopwatch with alarm, 500 gram analog and digital scales plus two 7 mm
nylon ropes 170 cm long. For students over age ten a Casio graphing calculator
is included. Basic Procedure: This quick improvement can work
with almost any age, even those who don't want to improve but those require some
special modifications and may take a little longer. Almost anyone can be
dramatically changed in less than 30 days but some a little longer. Accident
cases can take months or longer. First, the student is given a complete vision exam with a written report sent
to Dr. Hanson in Los Angeles. If lenses are indicated that should be taken care
of right away. Included with the vision report should be information on each
member of the family including pictures of each. Then Dr. Hanson or one of his
associates flys to the student's home, meets the parents and assesses the
general situation. Then, when appropriate, the student is taken away from his or
her environment for the quick therapy. Usually to places of interest to the
student and usually driving. Sometimes it is necessary to fly to a location and
then drive. QET (Quick Effective Therapy) invented by Dr. Hanson, is very
powerful and fast. The therapy is done on a 24 hour basis while living with the therapist. The
idea is to have fun and wait for the right moment when the student is motivated
to learn which can happen at any time of the day or night. Then the therapist
teaches until the student is tired and goes to sleep or other interesting things
are done to relax them until they are ready to learn again. If the original vision exam indicated the student can benefit from vision
training then that is done when the student returns back home and can take place
over a longer period such as six months or longer. The optometrist will be given
a list of the exercises done during the quick therapy so that they can be
repeated as part of the vision therapy for reinforcement. Parents get a fast,
terrific return on investment. The student is given most of the materials indicated above so he or she can
continue using them immediately upon returning home. The cost of the these
materials is included in the overall therapy charge as well as hotels, car
rental and food. The optometrist will also suggest various home exercises. The
program teaches the student how to teach others such as siblings or friends in a
fun way which further reinforces the original training as he or she becomes the
teacher. The idea is to give the parents a fixed cost in advance for the first five
days and if any additional days are required there is a 15% discount for the
next five days and thereafter there is a 25% discount. Vision training and
follow-up by the optometrist is separate. If additional intensive five day
follow-ups therapy are desired after six months or a year, a discount of 40% is
effective as this extra training is so beneficial to the student. If any family
members desire this marvelous program after the initial student there is an
immediate 25% discount. Additional discounts may be negotiable. Creative Ideas,
Summary: Written to help elementary age children but useful for younger as
well as older. It teaches a number of thinking and observational skills. All
teachers should read this. Vision Training Series Sighting Straight Lines with Tooties Objectives: To improve sighting ability and to have
confidence in patient's corrections and balance on a row of Tooties. Materials: About a hundred Tooties for a ten meter
row. A string about ten meters long plus a stopwatch for timing the row, a
calculator an ink pen and a pad of lined paper. Basic Procedure: Works with all ages over about
five. The idea is to make a straight line of Tooties end to end and then check
the straightness by sighting from either end and making corrections. Finally it
is checked with a taut string held along side of the row. Repeat a number of
times until their vision is enough to get a straight row. Later see how long it
takes to make a row. Details: Ask the patient to place all the Tooties
end to end in a straight line across a room or in a hall way as the row will be
about ten meters long. Tooties are designed so that ten Tooties end to end will
be about a meter. When placed side by side it takes about 15 Tooties to equal a
meter.* Then ask the patient to sight from either end and make corrections in the
straight line of Tooties as many times as they wish. When they have done their
best have the patient hold one end of a string about ten meters long and you
hold the other end taut so that the string is parallel to the row of Tooties.
Now it will be obvious if the row is straight. Have the patient correct his or
her row and again sight from either end. Mix up the Tooties and repeat the
process. Hopefully the patient will use vision better each time. Before
destroying the row have the patient walk barefoot along the row on top of the
Tooties.* Variations: Once the patient can make a reasonably
straight line fairly easily by sight try timing them in making a row. Don't time
the corrections. Repeat a number of times such as ten and enter the time on the
pad of paper with a comment about the straightness of each attempt. For students
about age eight and older you might have them calculate how many seconds per
Tootie to make their row and the inverse of that with how many Tooties per
second. Try making an even longer road by leaving the space of one Tootie
between each Tootie.* Eventually the student should be able to make a fairly straight line and
reasonably fast. Later you can set up other conditions such that no two Tooties
of the same color can be next to each other or that certain color sequences be
repeated. Now, in addition to straightness they have to keep color sequences in
mind. Later you can specify that certain types of Tooties such as Floaties or
Smoothies can not be next to each other. An easy way to detect the type of
Tootie is to tap each one with a finger as it is easy to differentiate between
regular Tooties and Floaties or Smoothies.* Creative Ideas,
Summary: Lots of ideas on how to get results with the Launcher. Gives
specific instructions. For Reading, Math and Brain Development Tootie Launcher Cat # 200 Introduction: In a nutshell, the Tootie Launcher is
an excellent screening device to see if children tend to use their brains or
just physical prowess. Much can be learned by just observing at first with a
minimum of instruction. Mix in a few Floaty Tooties & some of many other
kinds of Tooties also. It permits children to develop their vision, self-esteem
and coordination while having lots to fun. The Tootie Launcher is one of the most versatile and useful pieces of Tootie
Equipment. The age span is from age 3 thru adult with the maximum usefulness
between ages 4 to 12. It may be used as part of the regular class curriculum
just before reading or math as an effective conditioner for these academic
subjects. Or it may be used just for play value and overall eye- body
coordination. Playgrounds report continued enthusiasm day after day all summer
long. Summer camps find them very effective in the free time just after supper.
Optometrists and Colleges use them as part of their regular training. For adults
and teenagers the Tootie Launcher, with all its variations, makes a great party
game. Parents find them a great home game for years of healthful fun. Mental
institutions, mentally retarded, and handicapped schools find them especially
useful, since they motivate the patient so strongly. Girls physical education
classes in high school and college report amazing improvements in overall
coordination in a matter of just days or weeks. The proper quantity is very
important. Normally, about six launchers per classroom or playground is ideal.
And even more important is that each Tootie Launcher be equipped with at least
two dozen Tooties. Read teacher's handbook for detailed instructions. Philosophy: Schools tend to teach only success so
when children are out in the real world they have trouble dealing with failure.
The launcher is designed to allow the user to enjoy failure without criticism.
Hopefully the student will learn a little from each failure and every now and
then will be rewarded for his efforts and will apply this philosophy to his
everyday life. Object: To have lots of fun while exercising and
improving dynamic visual acuity, fusion, and peripheral vision which is so vital
to proper reading development and speed reading. Improves accurate application
of leg muscle power and eye-hand timing. Eliminates awkwardness quickly and
promotes physical agility and dexterity. There are so many useful applications
that it is impossible to list all of them here. Be sure to give full details
when writing for detailed suggestions about your specific application. Our goal
is to help you get good results so don't hesitate to write! Tooties,
California 90250 is usually enough but use the full address to be sure. Directions: Read but allow the child to discover on
his own. Don't tell him. Place a Tootie crosswise on the blinking eye. Stomp
hard on the other end where the footprint is. Use either foot and later practice
with the other foot. Children under three may find it better to use both feet at
once. Caution: Observe that small children do not have toes under launcher when
stomping with the other foot. For older children the most efficient way to stomp
is to have the heel of the foot contact the launcher just before the rest of the
foot. Ladies with high heels should take off their shoes or use their toes. At
first just see how high you can launch the Tootie in the range from 3 to 40 feet
and, of course, try to catch it as it comes down but don't tell the child to
catch. Let him or her discover on their own. Watch to see if the hands make any
motions as if to catch. Many children just leave their hands hanging and don't
even follow the Tootie with their eyes. Don't tell them to track but keep
launching and soon eyes will start to track automatically. Now place two Tooties on the launcher with one in front of the other. Using
different colored Tooties catch one in each hand. Repeat three times without
missing. Repeat and catch the other color with each hand and repeat three times
without missing. Be sure to place the same color on the blinking eye each time.
This is the Tootie that will go the highest. Repeat, switching hands each three
times as well as launching harder. When the student can easily catch three times
in a row with either hand the next step is to separate the Tooties by one Tootie
width. This gives kids practice in estimating distances and makes it a little
more difficult to catch. When successful leave two Tootie widths in between.
Progress until one Tootie is on the eye and the other has moved to the pivot.
This is very difficult but possible. The secret is to catch the lowest Tootie
first. Try with three Tooties, all in a row. Stacking is not permitted except when
success is required without much skill as with handicapped children. Launch and
catch all three. It might help to let the child put a rubber band around all
three Tooties. It is possible to get about nine Tooties in one rubber band. When
sequencing Tooties in a row always add the new color Tootie at "eye"
end of launcher and keep in same sequence. Then go to four in a row, etc., up to
a possible 21 Tooties or more at once. Normally, a child can catch his age in
Tooties. When launching more than five Tooties at once, overlap the Tooties
slightly and squash the whole row down toward the eye. Most adults can catch
from 5 to 9 Tooties at once without too much practice once they get past the
transition point of 3 Tooties. If they appear to be having a lot of trouble,
suggest that the lowest Tootie should be caught first, since it will be in the
air the shortest period of time. There is a tendency to have their eyes follow
the first Tootie which is the highest. For young children, let them use a basket
to catch their Tooties. A score sheet should be put on the bulletin board showing the date each child
caught a certain number of Tooties. Thus, some children will be working on their
fivesees and some on ninesees, etc. If a child should have trouble getting past
a certain number of Tooties, have them practice awhile with one or two Tooties
extra. Another aid is to make sure all the colors are different and always in
the same order. Lay a duplicate set of colors alongside the launcher so child
can repeat the color pattern or have the child write down the color sequence.
Now keep a record of which colors are missed and what position they are in with
regard to the #1 Tootie which is the one closest to the person launching. With
this information the child can try specifically for the colors usually missed. A "fun" contest is to line up children of the same skill level such
as those able to catch 10 Tooties. Start with one Tootie and work up to their
limit to win, adding one Tootie after each launch, but going back down to one if
they ever miss any. In other words, their successes must be consecutive or they
start over again. For children age 8 or older there is a very exciting game where they catch
Tooties on their head, but only one at a time. It is quite easy when done
properly. First, have children put a Tootie on their head and determine tilt of
head where Tootie will slide off when head is tilted forward or backward.
Optimum position of head at instant of catching is halfway between the two
extremes. Beginning children have a tendency to tilt their head down and not
follow the Tootie with their eyes. Visual tracking is one of the skills this
game teaches. Practice launching the Tootie to just head height. If too high the
Tootie will bounce off because of the bouncing Tootie Crystals inside. If
necessary to bend down a little at time of impact be sure to bend at the knees
and keep your posture vertical and graceful. To succeed the Tootie must remain
on the top of the head til one is sure it won't fall off. The first goal level
is to catch ten Tooties this way but not necessarily consecutively during one
practice session. The second goal is 30, then 50, 70 and 100 as it gets much
easier. Then comes 5 consecutively without missing, then ten, etc. For this game
"In a row" contests are the best such as the first child to get five
consecutively. Ten in a row is the ideal number for these types of contests. To
qualify, contestants should be able to catch ten or more in a row when not under
the pressure of a contest. Smoothy Tooties should not be used as the Super
Tootie Crystals inside make them almost impossible to catch on one's head.

Information: Summary: This is one of the labels that appear on the back of the Tootie
Launcher giving useful information on how to use the Launcher for best results. IMPORTANT INFORMATION - File #790612, 891210, 971127 This Tootie Launcher is a valuable diagnostic tool to determine how people's
brains process information thru inputs from many senses. All children should be
Tootie tested the first few days of school. The test is independent of language
skills, culture and allows the teacher a rapid and effective assessment of the
child. It takes practice to evaluate the tests but reading the manual and taking
a one day workshop are very helpful. Tooties are self teaching. Automatically
gives instant feedback. Teaches children to persevere in spite of repeated
failure without repeating same mistakes, which is great for science, math and
life. In addition the Tootie Launcher is a very effective training tool for
developing all children and adults as well as a fast remediation device for
those with problems. Be sure to read Hanson's Puppy Theory on Learning
Disabilities. Most important of all, the Tootie Launcher is lots of fun for all ages and
highly motivational so should be used daily in schools just before reading or
math. In general with all ages, it is better to give as little instruction as
possible and don't demonstrate. Example: "Here is a launcher board and two
dozen Tooties. You figure out all the exciting ways to use it." If
necessary, use language to guide the child to discover on his own. Don't show
him. It takes a little longer but you get much better results in the long run.
It teaches child to think. Although this seems to be a simple board, many years of design, psychology,
math and physics are involved in getting it to do its job. Most people who try
to make their own fail to achieve good results even though it looks identical.
Don't tamper with success and your child's psyche - Get the best, at least in
the beginning until you learn how to get great results. Tooties appear to be simple bean bags but in fact are very complicated in
design taking as long as 3 - 4 years just to design and test one Tootie. The
crystals inside, along with some other secret factors, control the phenomenal
success of Tooties in many parts of the world since their acceptance in schools
beginning in 1962. Tooties have been so popular we often have difficulty keeping
up with orders even tho we are constantly expanding our production and with very
little advertising. Teachers and parents, who really want to help kids, are
always looking for better ways and seem to find us and keep ordering year after
year. Studies confirm that parents should have about one to four units (432
Tooties per unit) of Tooties for home use. They will be used almost daily for
the next ten years providing an enormous return of learning on their investment.
Our business is built on quality and service and we are always available to fly
expert teachers anywhere in the world to help children learn. You too can become
a part-time consultant if you really learn to use Tooties well. Write to us and
describe yourself. Always have at least two dozen Tooties available for each Launcher, even for
young children. Start with a red Tootie on the blinking eye, next add a green
Tootie on the eye with the red Tootie moving closer to you. With each success in
catching add a new color on the eye and always maintain the exact color
sequence. This helps teach sequencing, so useful in spelling, reading and math,
etc. Basically normal children can catch their age, i.e., a child of ten can
catch ten Tooties at one time when lined up in a row - not stacked. The world's
record was 22 Tooties for a 19 year old girl in Sweden for many years until a
ten year old Dutch girl named Hanneke De Leeuw caught 25. Her 8 year old sister,
Doortje, caught 14 as did four year old Lieveke. Even adults have trouble
catching more than nine Tooties. There are many different type of Tooties
although most look identical (read manual). Floaty Tooties (70 grams) and
regular (151 grams) should be mixed on the Launcher as the child gets better
along with a few Smoothies and Tweeny Tooties. Most Tooties are the same size
called #1 but many sizes are available. When writing for free instruction or suggestions always include a
self-addressed envelope and tell us about yourself, your children and how you
are using and enjoying Tooties. We make many different products so tell us which
ones you have and how you enjoy them. Tooties are designed to last about ten
years but many are still in use after 25 years. Worn or damaged Tooties of any
age will be replaced free if you return them along with $7 each for shipping and
handling. What a wonderful guarantee! Please include a note on how you use your
Tooties and why you like them so much. We make this unusual offer because we
want you to use your Tooties to their fullest capacity and not be afraid of
damaging them. When bouncing Tooties very high outdoors with the Tootie Bounce,
the Floaty Tooties will last longer. Creative Ideas,

Uses of Launcher: Summary: This is the second label on the Tootie Launcher giving specific tips
on how to get the best results in the classroom. Classroom Uses of Tootie Launcher Objective: To stimulate enthusiasm for reading, math
& science. Materials: Six Tootie Launchers plus at least 60
Tooties. Tooties Kit #2 provides 6 Launchers, 6 Tosses & 72 Tooties. Time Req'd: 30 to 60 minutes, just before math is
best. Setup: Line up the 6 launchers in an open space of
the room with a spacing of at least 30 inches between Launchers. Leave about
four feet between the footprint end of the Launcher and a wall. One child stands
at the footprint end and the others for each Launcher are seated Indian style at
the blinking eye end of the Launcher with about two feet of free space to the
Launcher. The reason for this arrangement is that there is no one behind the
child doing the catching and the seated kids can easily exercise their vision
watching the Tooties fly up. For a classroom of 30 children this will be five children per Launcher. If
each child is given six minutes for launching, the exercise will take only 30
minutes. Instead of time you can allow each child five to ten launches and
seated children can keep the count. This will allow each child to have several
turns. Longer turns give best results. Cautions: Don't allow the child seated near the
Launcher to help with the loading of the Tooties as her hands could be injured
if the child at the other end launches prematurely. The child doing the
launching should load his own Tooties. Don't launch too hard and hit ceiling. Procedure: Ten Tooties are lined up in a row
beginning at the eye end. Slightly overlapped Tooties make it easier to catch.
The neater the row the better. The first child & perhaps others watching are
given paper & pen to keep records of the number caught each time. Encourage children doing the record keeping to be neat. They should keep
track of the trial number and the number of Tooties caught each time along with
the name of child doing the launching. For 3rd grade and up the children should
call out the percentage caught. Later try it with only five Tooties per launch
but write the possible percentages on the blackboard. Later try other numbers of
Tooties. In this way the children will get a feeling of what percentages are
while having fun. Options: Children having difficulty catching can be
given a basket or bucket to make catching easier. Percentages get more
interesting when the number of Tooties is different from 10 or 5 and
possibilities should be written on blackboard or the children can be provided
calculators. Soon they will remember that 6 Tooties caught out of a possible 8
is 75% and 3 would be 37.5%. Later try it with 11 or 12 Tooties. Creative Ideas,
Tosquik 3 - Quick
Toss for Optometrists: Summary: Written for optometrists but suitable for anyone wanting to put
their Toss to use right away. Very minimum instructions. Vision Training Series by Dr. John Hanson rev 000321 Tootie Toss Quick Instructions for Optometrists Lay Tootie Toss face down and open legs straight up, one at a time. Stand it up so that both the short and long legs touch the floor at
the same time. This is for a slower, gentle, higher return. Stand back about six to ten feet and gently throw a Tootie at center of net.
Some people tend to throw too hard at first and are surprised when the Tootie
returns so fast and hits them. As you get better at catching you can throw harder and even get further away.
Don't tell the patients, let them discover on their own that the most effective
way to catch is with the fingers pointing towards the ceiling. When they have
their palms up, the tendency is to misjudge and the Tootie goes over their hand. Now turn the Tootie Toss over so that only the long legs (red caps) touch the
floor. This will be a steeper angle and the Tootie will return faster and lower
so the catcher may want to back up a little more. Patients may also be sitting on a chair or the floor or kneeling for
different effects with either angle of the Toss. With children, it is best to start them sitting on the floor, Indian style,
with their backs to a wall. Place the Tootie Toss in front of them. Start with
the Tootie Toss almost touching their legs. Don't tell them to catch but just to
throw and see if they try to catch and how. Tell them it counts if the Tootie
lands on their legs but not if it touches the floor. Later they can catch it
away from their body and later with either hand. Once they can do ten catches in row without missing move the Tootie Toss
further away in whatever increments are convenient and repeat the catching
process. Normally a two year old can catch quite well when the Tootie Toss is
close to them and after some practice. Be sure to try different types of Tooties in the same size and later try
other sizes and types. For some little kids a size 3 Floaty Tootie seems to work
best. Again, don't tell them to catch but praise them when they do. The type of
Tootie can make a big difference in levels of difficulty. The easiest is the
standard 151 gram Tootie which is about the weight of a baseball and yet it is
soft to catch and non threatening if it hits them. Read the detailed instructions for lots of other ideas on getting good
results. A favorite of mine is to start the children off with throwing with
their eyes closed. No practice is allowed with eyes open. They are really
delighted to discover that first they can catch it on their lap or against their
body and later away from their body. This is using their inner vision, the
processing of the information after it leaves the optic nerve. Later you can
occlude one eye and see the effects and of course try prisms also. The optometrist or therapist may be seated in a chair behind the Toss so they
can observe how the patient reacts to the various sensory inputs. It is
fascinating how much can be learned. Don't forget to call or write if we can
help you in any way. We have been doing this for over 38 years all over the
world and may have just the information you need to help your patients. Almost no maintenance is required on the Tootie Toss but if the legs should
not remain in place during use, tighten slightly the hose clamp where the leg
meets the main frame. The Tootie Toss weighs only 4.4 lbs and folds flat for
easy storage. Every patient should have one at home. It's great fun and good for
Visual Training. It fits easily in any car. Have fun! Dr. Tootie Creative Ideas,
Summary: About 29 pages of very detailed information on how to get good
results with the Tootie Toss. Also includes using the Tootie Bounce as a Tootie
Toss. Tootie Toss for Perceptual Motor Development The Tootie Toss is remarkably effective in improving the dynamic visual
accuracy for all individuals but with children the results are especially
dramatic. Reading of course requires visual accuracy and as you speed up, even a
little, visual dynamics becomes increasingly important. However to get the most
out of the Tootie Toss it is important to expand one's peripheral vision first
along with relatively slow visual dynamics. For this reason it is quite
beneficial to start with the Tootie Launcher, Cat # 200 which was designed to
make this preliminary training quite exciting. Once proficiency has been
established on the launcher one advances to the Tootie Toss. While the process
can be reversed, some psychological factors enter the human equation that
require additional sensitivity on the part of the teacher in order to get good
results quickly so take our tip and start with the launcher first. The Tootie Toss is a Nylon net suspended within a 34 x 28 inch frame and is
designed specifically to work with various kinds of Tooties. When used with
genuine Tooties according to the directions, predictable results are achieved
very quickly with all kinds of children. The Model 303 Tootie Toss has a novel
Flip Flop feature so that when it stands on its long legs the Tootie is returned
quite swiftly to the thrower. Without any adjustments it may be flipped over on
to its short legs and the Tootie returns very soft and gentle for beginners and
children down to age two. Of course the Tootie Toss folds flat so that it may be
carried about the school easily and stored in a corner or behind a door. The
Tootie Toss features adjustable clamps so the legs stay put when swung out for
use and the sturdy steel and aluminum construction has been welcomed for
reliable durability in daily use. We are always striving to improve our products
and welcome suggestions. That is why the specifications of Tootie products will
change for the better from time to time. Notice that the Tootie Toss is six
inches less in one dimension so that if it won't fit into a car one way you can
turn it the other way. Now it is much easier for itinerant teachers to take the
Tootie Toss from school to school easily, even in small cars. Assuming a very young child who has not learned to throw and catch, it
is important to place the child in the correct location in front of the Tootie
Toss. Even six inches from side to side or front and back can make a dramatic
difference so teachers should be especially sensitive to this aspect. Do not
encourage the child to catch or even suggest it but do praise her if she does.
The important thing is to get the child throwing properly and then as you see
how she throws you can position her closer or further with the objective that
the Tootie should hit her about chest high. This overcomes their fear of being
hit as they feel how soft the Tootie is. This is best done with the child
sitting Indian style against a wall with the Tootie Toss in front of her and
almost touching her legs. Later, when standing, placement of the child is so
important you should put a Tootie on the floor just in front of each toe, so
that she always stands in the same place until she develops proficiency. Note
that the foot opposite to throwing hand should be forward; about 6 to 12 inches
is enough. But don't mention it to the child. More about this later. As the Tootie keeps hitting her chest gently soon she will reach up to grab
it as it hits. Congratulate her always on whatever she does good. Instantaneous
verbal approval is very essential and in addition stick a Tootie Cutie sticker,
or some other sticker, on her each time. Once she is catching watch to see if
she uses one or both hands and congratulate her either way and gradually try to
praise her more if she catches the Tootie before it hits her body. If she is
using two hands her body should be centered with the center of the net. If one
hand, the shoulder of that hand should be centered with the net. With one hand
catching observe if when the Tootie misses that it went over or under her hand.
For most people the Tootie will always go over indicating that the error in eye
hand positioning is on the under side. A very easy solution without suggesting
that they over correct is just to have them invert their fingers so that the
fingers are pointing up even if the Tootie is lower than their waist. They can
always stoop down if necessary. Observing the placement of the fingers is a very important point which will
be expanded now. As a matter of fact, many of these points can be expanded
considerably so we invite all our friends to write in for specific help - just
be sure to send in lots of details and a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Whenever anyone (even adults) catches with one hand there is a tendency to
catch with the fingers pointed downward or toward the Tootie as in Fig. 2. Many
people will miss and you will notice that the Tootie almost always goes over the
hand. In other words their eyes do not know where their hand is accurately and
most people tend to judge on the underside. They would get better with practice
but the method is inefficient anyway so don't let them fail too many times
without suggesting a slight change that produces a dramatic result. A few
failures are quite useful because then the better method is appreciated more and
retained. The improved method is to have them rotate their wrist 180 so that their
fingers point up. Their eyes still tell them their wrist is in the same place
but their palm is in the correct location slightly higher. After a few throws
the improvement in catching is dramatic. There are other reasons why this method
is much better even when the Tootie returns below the waist except when it is
quite close to the ground. A second reason is that with the fingers up the
fingers tend to automatically close to grab the Tootie as shown in Fig. 3. When
catching as in Fig. 3, it's very easy to be successful whereas the method shown
in Fig. 4 invites failure and yet is the method used by most people, especially
girls. Before Tooties, they would become frustrated at their failure to catch
and tell everyone they are uncoordinated in order to justify their apparent lack
of skill. In all of our tests over many years we have found all girls to be
capable of excellent coordination when given the proper instruction and some
practice on the Tootie Equipment. A third good reason for catching with your fingers up is that it is a more
aggressive approach, that is you reach out to grab it. The fingers down method
is quite passive as you wait for it to reach your hand and your fingers push it
from your palm. A brief word about the qualities of Tooties that makes them so good for
teaching catching. In general only regular Tooties which weigh 151 grams should
be used. Smoothy Tooties of the same weight should not be used until the child
is quite successful as they are more difficult to catch. By this we mean 100
consecutive catches without missing, using either hand. Even with very young children and the handicapped the regular Tooties are
best. The action of the regular Tooties with bouncing Tootie Crystals makes them
stick in your hands when your grasp is fairly accurate. Yet with a sloppy grasp
they will jump out of your fingers. For some young children the larger size
Floaty Tooties may be best. Smoothy Tooties are harder to catch as are Floaty Tooties. In general,
Floaty Tooties weigh only about half of a regular Tootie of the same size but
the crystals are more bouncy and with the lighter weight are also harder to
catch. This is why regular Tooties are so good because their critical design and
manufacture along with their heavy weight make them so ideal for catching.
Tweeny Tooties are in between the weight of regular Tooties and Floaty Tooties
and have many excellent benefits as they are harder to catch. However the other Tooties are very useful when used in the correct
applications. One Tootie, called the PQ Floaty Tootie, is especially difficult
to catch because it rotates around the end of the Tootie rather than about the
center. In 1975 the PQ Floaty Tootie was replaced by the Yaggie Tooties which is
even more exciting and more durable. It took about seven years of research and
test to get this Tootie to do what we wanted. As of 1998 the most difficult
Tootie to catch is the X-204 Floaty. Use of the special Tooties is more involved
and is beyond the scope of this booklet. Write for more advanced booklets if
desired. We always welcome inquiries from our customers who supply complete
details on the problems they want to solve. Then we can give you answers and
suggestions that will be most helpful on our first answer. One useful application for a Floaty Tootie is when a child tends to throw
quite hard and yet is afraid of getting hit. Incidentally, Tooties are designed
so that most children don't mind too much when they are hit with the Tootie,
even in the face. This is because the Tootie is designed to have about eight
square inches of contact area on impact which evenly distributes the impact
forces. The nature of the Tootie Crystals is such that the crystals shift upon
impact and apply the distributed load gradually. This is another reason why the
volumetric efficiency of the Tooties is so important. In simple terms it means
how full the Tootie bag is. If too full, they could be dangerous. That is why
you should always use genuine Tooties. When a baseball or tennis ball hits, all of its force is concentrated only in
1/2 square inch of area and in addition the load is applied suddenly. This is
why a baseball at any speed is dangerous and the reason why children and adults
are afraid of being hit. A regular Tootie is about the same weight as a baseball
and yet it is quite safe. Professional baseball players use Tooties to improve
their performance skills. For some children even a regular Tootie may worry them so if the apprehension
is there switching to a look alike Floaty Tootie is better even though it is
harder to catch. Remember we are not interested in catching at first but getting
the child's throwing consistent so the Tootie hits her in the chest or lap. Soon
she will be catching as they hit her chest. It's easy this way as the Tooties
have stopped and she just keeps them from falling. Some of the time she will catch it before it hits her chest using both hands
and should be congratulated. Don't try to speed up the process of evolving to
one hand, at least not directly, by telling her to use one hand. An easy way is to see if she can throw and catch one after the other till her
success ratio is pretty good. At this point try introducing the regular Tootie
which weighs 151 grams. As she continues to catch soon she will be able to catch
with her dominant hand. Sometimes a slight suggestion in the form of a question
will be helpful. Don't forget that all of these procedures should be followed
each time with lots of praise because little kids don't consider catching a
useful goal in itself. All of this takes 10-15 minutes for each child so it is quite important not
to stop in the middle of a session while the child is enthused with his or her
progress. The danger is that the child will be stopped prematurely to give
another child a chance. While it's nice to want to give another child a chance,
it's bad for the learning process. For most classrooms with 20- 30 children
about six Tootie Tosses are adequate especially when a dozen Tootie Launchers
are available also. All of our Tootie devices are designed to be self-teaching but a teacher
circulating among the children can achieve much faster progress. Note that this technique should be quite different for each child depending
on their age and ability. This is why the sensitivity of the teacher is so
important. Give the child a minimum of instruction at first and observe how she
throws and if she tries to catch. Don't give too much advice as one of the
objectives is to teach the child to think for himself. Offer specific
suggestions in the form of questions that lead the child to a better method,
such as: "If you moved a little closer would it be easier to catch?" Tracking - One of the first things to notice is whether the child's eyes are
tracking the Tootie as it returns. If tracking is not established first then you are wasting your time trying to
teach catching even though the child may succeed now and then. This is why it's
so important to watch the child first. Stand in front of the child about 45
degrees off to the side as shown in Fig. 5. The purpose is to observe the child's eyes to see if she follows the
Tootie to the net and especially as it goes back to her. Many children,
especially younger ones, will move their head around but won't see where the
Tootie goes at all. Continue having the child throw if the tracking is poor and
make sure the Tootie Toss is flipped to the gentle mode (short legs on floor) so
that the Tootie returns very soft and slowly. This gives the child's eyes more
time to react. If necessary go back to the Tootie Launcher which is much better
for beginning tracking. Besides tracking another very important skill is
entering the picture and that is the eyes are required to focus from far to near
and vice versa. This is difficult to observe but is very important and can be
assumed to be working fairly well when the child catches easily. This skill is
quite vital for reading for it insures the child is able to focus at near point.
Of course other tests should be performed to confirm this near point accuracy.
If a qualified optometrist with advanced work on visual training is available it
would be a good idea to engage him as a consultant to perform various visual
efficiency checks. The "Snellen Test" where you read letters on a
chart about 20 feet away only gives limited far point information and is not
very useful for reading. In addition, a good optometrist will check for
binocularity to make sure both eyes are working together. In some communities a very successful approach that provides good vision care
at low cost is to have a number of teachers trained by the optometrist. They can
perform basic tests and screen the whole school population periodically to
select the children that appear to need the services of a professional. This
plan has other benefits since more than a thousand optometrists are experienced
in applying various Tootie Techniques. Such a consultant can be of significant
help to your reading program. Many optometry colleges now include Tootie
Training as part of their visual training courses. Our own consultants may be
able to suggest well qualified professionals in your area. Back to the tracking. A child can pick up tracking much easier when the
Tootie comes right back to her so depending on how hard she throws move the net
closer or further from her so the Tootie will hit her chest. Also shift the net
from right to left as required and put a Tootie in front of each toe when
standing as mentioned before. Don't forget to avoid using a wall to hold the
Tootie Toss in place. Better to put student next to wall and have someone hold
the Toss or use two ten pound Tootie Babies on the legs to hold it in place. Time Delay - Whenever a child misses in throwing or catching it is
important to provide them with another Tootie right away. The easiest way is for
the teacher to have a supply of Tooties in her hands so she can give the child
another one quickly. An alternative where the teacher is handling several
children at once is to place about a dozen on the floor off to the side of the
child. This method is a little less efficient since the child may want to
retrieve a miss. Let her if she insists but keep offering a replacement. The objective is to shorten the time delay between a miss and the next throw
so that the corrective mechanism sets to work before the child forgets what she
just did that resulted in a miss. If she takes time to walk up to the net to
retrieve and then walk back to her correct position she has a tendency to forget
what she did before that resulted in failure. While this point can be neglected and frequently is, it is very
important if you want quick results. Most important, don't fight the child but
offer suggestions she will accept. Be sensitive to those special occasions where you may want her to retrieve as
in walking up to the net and back she gains much positive information on how far
she is from the net. This is useful for a child who has a tendency to under
throw or overthrow considerably. Many throwing at once - Normally one child uses the Tootie Toss at a time.
However, for non-specific applications you may wish to permit as many as six
children to use it at once if the children are about the same age and skill
level. It's a sort of pandemonium as each child throws and tries to catch or
recover his own Tootie (each a different color or number). Stand so you can see
their faces. Pull out any children who can't seem to stand the stress and group
them separately. Children will often be hit so watch how quickly they learn to
duck and soon some will be catching Tooties that are about to hit them. This
activity should be controlled carefully and ended fairly soon before bedlam
starts. For very young children have three sit next to each other with their
backs against a wall. Place the net in front of them so that it almost touches
their legs. As they get better you can move it further away. Note that the child in the center will receive most of the Tooties so that
child should be more rugged than the others. Very delicate children should have
the Tootie Toss all to themselves. Older kids (ages 6-10) This section will also apply to younger children as they gain proficiency. By
that we mean the child can easily catch at least 100 in a row without missing
using either hand. Remember the foot opposite to throwing hand should be
forward. Proficiency at various distances from the net should also be
established. Now place a Tootie in each hand, throw with the dominant hand and
catch with the other. Of course shift the other Tootie to the throwing hand in
the meantime. Gradually speed up the process until the child no longer waits for
one Tootie to be caught before throwing the next. Teenagers and college kids may
get three going at once but it's quite difficult. Repeat the procedure but throw with non-dominant hand and catch with
dominant. ADVANCED ACTIVITIES Spin Around - This procedure is quite useful but is normally only used
briefly since it requires quite a bit of skill. The idea is to throw a Tootie at
the Toss and then spin yourself around before you catch the Tootie. Start about
15 to 20 feet from the Toss so you will have more time to react and spin as soon
as you have thrown. One of the interesting factors that the teacher may easily observe with a
group of students is brain dominance. The student is concentrating so hard on
spinning around that her throw misses the net entirely. The second factor is
that the student hesitates before spinning in order to see if it will hit the
net and usually is not all the way around by the time the Tootie returns. The
secret is to spin fast as soon as you throw. Right handed children will usually
spin to the left and vice versa. It is harder to spin the other way but let them
try it. Among the important reasons why this exercise is useful are: If the student is overly concerned with being hit, switch to a same size but
half weight Floaty Tootie. Let her warm up first by ordinary throws and catches
since the Floaty Tootie is harder to catch but at least she won't be afraid that
a hit will hurt her. The X-204 Floaty is especially safe and is used by
professional baseball players at 90 mph. With some children it may be helpful to have them pretend they are throwing a
Tootie and then spin around. The teacher then throws after a slight delay so the
child will have time to have spun completely around before the Tootie gets to
her. This could be preceded by the teacher throwing and student catching without
any spinning. Sometimes a child's will is greater than his skill. In these cases give the
child a basket or plastic bucket in which to catch the Tootie. This way she is
assured of success. Angle of Return - It is important for the teacher to
understand some of the physics behind the Tootie Toss. The best way is to
experiment by throwing Tooties at the net from different angles. The Tooties
will not bounce off the net at the opposite angle as a ball off a wall. Instead
Tooties will tend to bounce straight back from the center of the net as shown in
Fig. 6 regardless of the angle from which thrown. This is a very useful quality
which has been designed into the Tootie Toss. Because the design purposely introduces a margin of deviation for excitement
you should throw a number of times from each angle to see that the normal
distribution of returns is toward the center. Even when throwing from the center
of the net it is important that the Tootie not return uniformly each time. We
have designed it so that 20% of the returns will be erratic to keep the student
alert and able to adjust quickly. If you want a uniform return use a soft sponge
ball but you will find that the kids find the Tooties more useful. Take advantage of these characteristics as when working with a child on a one
to one basis. Stand at a 45 degree angle to the centerline and closer so that
you can see net and child's eyes easily as shown in Fig. 6. Many teachers stand
right behind the net and throw down into the net especially when in the gentile
mode. From that position it is very easy to watch the child's eye tracking.
Don't forget to flip the Tootie Toss upside down into the other mode for a
completely different effect. Pepper Tooties - For adult parties and special activities
when a child is very good the Pepper Tooties game is lots of fun. It takes three
or more people and about 4 to 6 dozen Tooties or more. Fig. 7 shows how each
person is positioned with regard to the centerline of the net. Note that it
could be done with two people but three is more exciting. The catcher is lined up in the center and the two throwers off at an angle on
each side. Each thrower is armed with an armful of Tooties (2 to 3 dozen). The
procedure is for one thrower to throw and then the other alternately. It
develops great teamwork and skill since each Tootie must hit after the other has
left the net for best results. Obviously the catcher cannot hold all the Tooties
he catches so his objective is to catch and then drop them at his feet or into a
bucket. It will be easy to see whether she is catching or missing. The catcher
should have at least three turns before you change places so her corrective
mechanisms for improvement get a chance to work. At first throw fairly slowly
and then step it up as she gets better. Later, on her second time around she
will have had the benefit of seeing how the others did it. To make it even more exciting, mix Tooties of the same size but of different
weights. This technique is very handy for getting some reluctant kids involved
even if they don't want to catch. Have them stand close, and the throwers should
throw gently and then gradually increase the bombardment as the reluctant
student tolerates the involvement. Used wisely, this technique is a valuable
tool. Another variation effective with "special" children is to seat them
in semicircle in front of the Toss as shown in Fig. 8. Each child is given a few Tooties and all start throwing one Tootie after
another on command. The teacher stands behind the Toss and aims it at the child
she wants to get involved and of course she becomes flooded with Tooties.
Gradually, she can aim it at other children or tilt it up if target kid can't
take too much at once. Acceptance Span - It may be helpful at this point to
review some of the highlights of Acceptance Span in the "Static
Applications of Tooties" booklet. The procedure is for the teacher to have an armful of 2 to 3 dozen Tooties
that appear identical but are actually of assorted weights. Most should be the
normal 151 grams. At first have only standard Tooties in your arms and a mixture of standards
and specials on the floor. At the moment, we are talking about a typical 6 year
old since details will vary with age and skill. Stand about five to ten feet
away and gradually toss a Tootie underhand to the child, then the second and
third, etc. Always have child cup hands together and throw in such a manner that
insures she will catch it. Each time she catches she drops it into a nearby
bucket. Don't put the bucket too close to her feet as those she almost catches
might fall into the bucket. Besides having the bucket a couple of feet away
(further later) gives her a chance to practice her aim. Those in the bucket will
represent her score. Repeat this several times til her score seems to stabilize always using the
standard 151 gram Tooties but in assorted colors. Now pick up the mixture having been careful not to segregate them so
carefully the child would be suspicious. The idea is to make transition so
smoothly she thinks it's just another turn. You, the teacher, can easily
identify them by touch. First throw a few standard Tooties so she will feel the
process is the same as before. Now toss a heavy one (3 times the weight) and
watch her facial reaction as she catches it. Make sure your toss does not
reflect any difference so that the only time she will know it's different is
when it touches her hands. She may be so surprised she will drop it. Ask her to
verbalize her reactions. As a matter of fact, the whole procedure should include
lots of verbal expression including timely praise from the teacher. (Make sure
it's sincere). You could comment that things are not always as they appear to be, so while
this Tootie looked alike it was actually a lot heavier. Therefore one should be
prepared to cope with a variety of situations. Go back to tossing a few normal
Tooties and then try a heavy one again. If she drops it, repeat the procedure
til success comes easily. Praise her right after success and immediately toss
her a Floaty Tootie (1/2 standard weight) and watch her reaction. Again
verbalize so she is aware of the weight span from heavy to light and vice versa.
This is called the "acceptance span." Children and some adults have a relatively narrow acceptance span and when
things don't turn out the way they planned they get quite upset. Good
verbalization during this procedure is very effective in widening children's
acceptance span. Continue the exercise selecting the various Tooties at random til she is well
conditioned to accept and catch anything you throw at her. Note the wide variation even though all these Tooties look identical to a
regular Tootie. This variation is most often done with Cat # 105-1, Heavy Duty
Tootie Set, which is made up of the three Tooties shown with an asterisk but the
additional Tooties give even better results. First toss a few standard Tooties to student, one at a time, then a heavier
Tootie, and one even heavier. Now toss a Floaty Tootie fairly fast. Since
student will assume it's very heavy compared to the last Tootie, she will tend
to panic and miss. What a surprise when she finds out it not only wasn't heavy
but was much lighter than a standard Tootie. This is fun at adult parties also. Miss Pattern - Earlier we discussed the importance
of giving the child a fresh Tootie whenever she missed while throwing at the
Tootie Toss rather than allow her to retrieve. The main purpose was to shorten
the time between the error and the corrective action. However for certain
children there is another substantial benefit as well especially for busy
teachers and doctors. Give the child a basket or bucket full with 50 Tooties and have her throw at
the Tootie Toss from some specific distance (mark it with a Tootie). She
continues throwing and catching until she has had fifty misses and used up all
the fresh Tooties. Tooties that are caught may be used again except for
percentage tests where they are used only once but the Tooties caught are placed
in a separate dispenser or bucket to indicate the score. With either method when all the Tooties have been used, observe the
distribution of the Tooties on the floor. Congratulate the child on something
good about the exercise and possibly take a picture of the distribution with her
sitting just behind the Tooties. Her distribution may be similar to that shown
in Fig. 9. Analysis of the pattern gives a quick check on the child's performance. The
Tooties laying around where she was standing are an indication of failures in
catching. Those laying around the Toss and beyond are failures in aim. In
between the child and the net are those that weren't thrown hard enough to come
all the way back. Way behind the child are those that were thrown too hard and
went over her head. Those past the Tootie Toss indicate very bad aim. And of
course the success pile shows the percentage caught out of 50 tries. A busy doctor with several patients could be out of the room for a few
minutes and on returning immediately size up the situation as to what corrective
action was required for each child. Many state hospitals for the mentally
retarded find this a very useful technique. How to correct the different problems observed is covered in other
parts of this booklet or if you need help our consultants would be glad to offer
suggestions. Just be sure to give lots of details on the child, her problems and
Tooties available (quantities, types, equipment, etc.). Hyperactive Kids - Occasionally we run into kids
that are just too strong and can't apply their force gently. We see this
especially on playgrounds with the Tootie Toss where they throw hard at the
Tootie Toss just to see how far it will go. This may be OK for awhile but soon
they should exercise some self-control. It's also very obvious in the classroom
when they press buttons too hard on calculators. These kids need immediate help
in learning to control force. All mother dogs teach this to their puppies while
very young whereas humans are not as smart. When an open grassy area is available the best way to use up his excess
energy is with the Tootie Bounce. (See the following section). However, in the
absence of a Tootie Bounce we can use a little applied psychology. It really
works great in calming him down. But first learn to recognize the symptoms so
you will know when to apply the corrective action. The child steps to the side of the Tootie Toss and throws a Tootie at
it as hard as he can and watches it fly. He has no intention to catch. That is
why he stepped to the side so he wouldn't get hit. Remember it's instinctive to
throw but not to catch. (See section on "Instincts"). His objective is
to see how far the Tootie will go and there are good applications for this
exercise but not here at this stage of development. Of course you can tell him
not to throw so hard but psychologically that is bad as we want him to learn to
control himself so here is an effective alternate. As shown in fig. 10 place the child with his back to a wall or even in a
corner and with the Tootie Toss about 8 to 15 feet in front of him. If the floor
is slippery use a couple of Tootie Babies (10 lbs.) on the horizontal legs to
hold the Tootie Toss firmly in place. Fig. 10 Now if he throws too hard he is worried about being hit so automatically he
tempers his throws to a more gentle pace and starts catching which was the goal
in the first place. In very difficult cases the instructor may want to throw
some extra ones into the net very hard to keep the child busy and demonstrate
the need to adjust your force to the needs at hand. Tootie Bounce - Basically the Tootie Bounce is a
small, strong, lightweight frame 20 inches square for kids ages eight and older
or 17 inches for younger children. It is held horizontally with both hands and
bounces Tooties vertically as shown in Fig. 11. Given a safe open space in which
to run Fig. 11 The child can bounce the Tootie more than 100 feet in the air. The trick is
to bounce it straight up so you can do consecutive high bounces at least 25 or
more times. It is great exercise for the whole body including the eyes but the
main use here is to use up excess energy. And it does that very quickly. About
five minutes for most high school and college kids. It poops them out so quickly
that it's the only one of our games where children are glad to relinquish their
turn. To get the Tootie to go high takes a tremendous amount of energy and in
less than 3 to 6 seconds it's back ready to hit up again so you don't have much
time to rest in between. Most of the initial problems in getting the Tootie to
go straight up appear to be in timing. The child swings too early with the
Bounce and the Tootie goes over his head behind him. If his timing is delayed
then the Tootie sails way out in front of him and he has to run like mad to get
under it. The running is so strenuous he sometimes forgets to bounce it straight
up and so has to run some more. Read the "Tootie Bounce Uses" booklet for more details on
the wonderful applications of this device for children from college to age
eight. For younger children down to age two a smaller Tootie Bounce is
available. For these very young children the purpose is not to get high bounces
but rather consecutive low bounces or even single bounces and it's easier if you
start with a balloon as it gives the child more time. Instincts - As man developed from his ancestors it
appears he acquired and maintained an instinct to throw, perhaps for the
necessity of throwing rocks to kill animals for food or in self- defense. But
there is no parallel for catching, at least not for objects floating through the
air. This can best be noted by watching kids near a river as they satisfy their
instinct to throw stones into the river or even across. In the cities the
results are unfortunate when children throw at glass windows. As with the river
he feels the effect of long distance power as the rock splashes or the window
breaks. Adults usually interpret this as being destructive whereas for the child
it is merely a way to improve his learning. In later years as man had time for recreation balls were developed from rags
and skins so the need for catching came about but it still is not instinctive.
Another way this can be noted is to observe small babies. From the first time
they learn to stand or younger the power of throwing things is quickly learned.
First the object makes noise and usually attracts the mother's attention so it
is readily reinforced. But at this stage there is no joy in catching. It's
interesting to watch parents and teachers put a small child in front of the
Tootie Toss and even before teaching him to throw they are encouraging him to
catch. Not too useful. If they realized what we have been talking about their
approach would be different. The correct approach for very young children has
been covered in another section but we will cover the highlights again. Tracking training is best accomplished with the Tootie Launcher where it
happens automatically as the Tootie is moving much more slowly. Concentration - Reading is a very complex skill and
one of the essentials is the ability to concentrate and avoid distractions. Even
you may have had your mind wander when reading or you arrived at the bottom of a
page without remembering what you just read. The following procedure is one of a
number of ways that Tooties can help concentration. With Tooties one is able to
learn to concentrate quickly, for long periods of time and without effort. This
is a very powerful tool. Two or more Tootie Tosses are required with four the
ideal as shown in Fig. 12. The idea is to have Tooties crossing at right angles to other Tooties in such
a way that they don't hit each other. Each person has to be aware of what the
others are doing and yet concentrate specifically in getting his Tootie to
travel in the same path each time that won't intersect the path of other Tooties.
In the "Static Applications" booklet is a similar game with 4 to 6
pairs of people but each has a Tootie and tosses underhand to his partner. The
concentration required is quite intense so don't do it too long. Blind Children - At first one wouldn't imagine that
a blind child can throw and catch but results with the Tootie Toss are quite
fantastic. Follow the procedure carefully so that you build the child's
confidence. One "goof" can be a giant step backward. Remember these
children have been blind for some time, possibly since birth and have pretty
strong feelings on failing. We always like to give the ideal set-up first and then if the ideal is not
obtainable, the teacher at least has sufficient information on how to guide the
child with whatever resources are available. Let's assume the children are under
age eight for the moment. The ideal is to delay introducing the Tootie Toss until the child has gone
through some of the static phases with lots of Tooties and then the Tootie
Launcher phase. (See other booklets). Seat one to six blind children in the
center of a rug and give each one a Tootie and ask them to verbalize on its
qualities. Encourage them to manipulate and squeeze them before verbalizing and
offer comments on various qualities of the Tootie, such as softness, weight,
noisiness, etc. Then give each several Tooties and ask them to balance them on
their head; first one, then two criss cross etc. Later have them tilt head and drop the Tooties into their cupped hands which
is in their lap as shown in Fig. 13. Repeat several times until the children seem to get a feeling of where their
hands and head are in space with relation to each other. In other words, they
are starting to catch a few in their cupped hands. Later with a unit or two of
Tooties (400- 800) ask the kids to place them end to end like a road all over
the floor. Then take off their shoes and walk on them. The whole purpose of this exercise is to get the children used to the
Tooties. Now have a child lay prone on floor, first on tummy, and pour Tooties
over them as shown in Fig. 14. Use 2 or 3 buckets of 50 Tooties each. Start from a low height and
gradually increase the height. Start with insensitive areas like the feet, then
the fanny, back and finally head. Always watch to get children's reaction to see
if they can overcome their apprehension. If not, ease up a little or switch to
someone else for awhile. The teacher should parallel all her actions with lucid
verbal descriptions so that the other blind children will know what's going on. Repeat the foregoing procedure with the child face up but be cautious and
sensitive in picking the targets on which to pour the Tooties and the height for
each spot. Don't forget that for some very sensitive children, you will want to
switch to the half weight Floaty Tooties or some that are even lighter as well
as different sizes. (See catalog) In pouring them on the child's head, you may want to do it first on the side
of the head to get her reactions and later on the chin etc. At first, pour them
from a very low height such as 4-6 inches. The goal is to reassure them that the
Tooties are quite soft and safe even if they hit you in the face. Note: To write good procedures we need good feedback from teachers in the
field so please write when you get a chance so that we can share your
experiences with others. Tootie Launcher for Blind Children - Next
step is the Tootie Launcher. Be sure to have them feel the launcher and
verbalize on its features. Also while the launcher is on the floor, have them
push on short end with their hand to get a feel as to how it pivots. Each
launcher has a depression at one end with an eye inside. Have them feel where
the eye is so they can place a Tootie over the eye in preparation for launching.
Show them how to stomp on it, first with one Tootie and then two seeing how high
they can go. The teacher reports how high the Tootie goes in terms of the
child's height. Continue up to eight or more Tooties. No attempt to catch is
required or even suggested but if she does catch or even attempt to catch,
praise her. The only goal is uniformly controlled launches, hopefully at least
as high as her head. Now repeat the procedure starting with one Tootie on the Launcher but this
time have her cup her hands in advance. Praise her if it lands in her hands,
otherwise give advice on whether too hard or soft a launch, etc. Repeat just a
few times and if unsuccessful advance to two Tooties at once (one in front of
the other). Repeat several times and advance to three Tooties on the way up to
eight or more as shown in Fig. 15. If possible, the child should load her own launcher. Encourage neatness since
the launch is more predictable that way. The idea of adding more Tooties is that
we increase the probability that one will land in her cupped hands. Also by this
time, she will be completely confident of the safety of Tooties. With some children, it is hard to tell them to launch more gently so just add
more Tooties so the increased weight will temper the launch. On the other hand,
if a child is quite weak and various tricks to get her to stomp harder don't
work, switch to Floaty Tooties. We have a complete range of weights (all appear
identical) for every conceivable need from very light to very heavy and in
different sizes as well. When the child is fairly successful and confident, advance to the Tootie
Toss. Don't forget that with some children it may be useful for them to hold a
basket or bucket to catch the Tooties when using the launcher. Tootie Toss for Blind Children - When possible be
sure the conditioning procedures in the last two sections are used. Set up the
Tootie Toss so that the short legs are on the floor. This is the
"gentle" mode. If the floor is slippery, put a Tootie Baby (10 lbs.)
on each of the horizontal legs. This keeps the Tootie Toss in position and
provides a more stable return as the Tootie bounces back. As with the Launcher,
have the child completely feel all over the Tootie Toss and verbalize on its
features as you explain them. Have her push in on the net so she gets a feeling
of the amount of spring. Set the child on a chair with the front legs of the
chair about 3 feet from the bottom part of the Tootie Toss frame as shown in
Fig. 16. Even better is to have the child sit Indian style with her back to a
wall as explained later. The purpose of the chair is to accurately position the child centered in
front of net and at a specific distance. Another vital reason for sitting is so
she has a lap in which to catch the Tooties. Ask her to throw overhand gently at
the net. Guide her hand at first. Don't attempt at first to have her throw hard enough for Tooties to return to
her but just hard enough to hit the net and bounce to the floor. A few jingle
bells tied to the net give her the chance to hear two sounds. One when it hits
the net and next when the Tootie hits the floor. Be sure to review the section on Rubella children as you may wish to seat
children on floor instead on in a chair. With the child in a chair, you must be
prepared to catch the chair in case it starts to tip backward due to excessive
enthusiasm when throwing and catching. By 1982 university studies indicate that
sitting on the floor is the best way to start. In general, always use regular Tooties (151 grams) first since they are
easier to catch but consider the other weights or sizes when there appears to be
a need. Have the child throw a little harder and move the chair to the position
where the Tooties are most likely to land in her lap or hit her in the chest
according to her pattern of throwing. This is why the child should throw at
least a dozen Tooties before even attempting to catch so you will know where to
position the chair or her if sitting on the floor. At first, the catching will be in her lap and later she will grab it just as
it hits her chest. Soon she will be cupping her hands in front of her chest and
she will start catching away from her body. Be sure to explain that sometimes a
miss will not be her fault even if she threw perfectly since the net is designed
to have some random features. The amount of randomness can be cut down by
holding the Tootie in her hand so that its long axis is parallel to the net.
Hopefully it will hit the net that way and bounce back with more precision. This exercise gives the child a tremendous amount of confidence and soon some
of them can even play underhanded catch with each other. As success is attained,
move the chair back to other positions and finally repeat the procedure with the
child standing. In general, don't use the other position of the Tootie Toss as
the Tootie returns too swiftly. Rubella Children - The procedure is quite similar to
the section on blind children except that in addition, these children can't
hear. More time is needed on the introductory phases so be sure to read the
"Static Applications" booklet as well as the blind section in this
booklet. In most cases it is advisable not to skip any of the preliminary
activities so be sure to have lots of Tooties such as a unit or two and
hopefully an assortment of different weights and sizes especially our Smoothy
A-Go-Go Tooties with long hair. Studies at UCLA state that at least 1000 to 1500
Tooties are required for best results even with normal kids. As with blind children, each time a new piece of equipment is introduced,
have the child feel it carefully. With the launcher, she should also feel it on
the floor while pushing at either end to see how it pivots. With the Tootie
Toss, also feel it all over and have child push into net so she gets the feeling
of the amount of spring. Each time you use the Toss with a Rubella child, review pouring Tooties over
them. Now seat them in a cross-legged position about one foot from the bottom of
the Tootie Toss. It's better if you can seat three children side by side so they
can communicate with each other by their shoulders touching as shown in Fig. 17. Make sure Tootie Toss is in gentle position, ie, with short legs on the
floor. The teacher with an armful of Tooties drops one at a time directly into
the lap of each child bypassing the Tootie Toss. Repeat several times, then
teacher drops them gently into net so they bounce into child's lap. Experiment
to find the best part of the net to hit as shown in Fig. 18. When the teacher
drops the Tootie in child's lap it must be done at exactly the time a Tootie
thrown correctly would have landed in her lap. By having three compatible children in a row, the Tootie will hit one of them
and they will communicate to the others via their body movements. When done properly, child will gain lots of confidence so you can let her
throw at the net by herself. Encourage her to be gentle at first. A few small
jingle bells on the net is helpful so teacher can keep eyes on children and
still hear when Tootie hits the net. Try other types of Tooties, sizes and
weights. As more confidence is gained, move children further back, six inches at a
time. Other booklets available for parents and teachers Write for details. When writing for information on specific applications we can help you better

Summary: Detailed information on how to use the Tootie Bounce for best
results. It does many good things besides improving vision. Vision Training Series by Dr. John Hanson Tootie Bounce Purpose: To improve vision quickly, motivation,
hyperactivity, alertness, attention span and cardiovascular fitness, etc. There
are many other benefits as the exercise is in real time and space and the Tootie
is constantly crossing the mid-line. Most important of all is that it is lots of
fun. Materials Required: 20 inch square Tootie Bounce and
an assortment of different types of Tooties. Part of the success of the Tootie
Bounce is that it is very strong and very light at the same time weighing only
0.72 lbs. (11.6 ounces) or 328 grams. It is made of aircraft quality aluminum
with only one joint where the red sticker is. For most uses, use two #31 amber
rubber bands per hook. For college age kids outdoors try three or four of these
special rubber bands per hook. Even indoors you should have Floaty Tooties
besides the regular Tooties supplied. Tizzy and Dreamy Tooties are also quite
useful indoors. Outdoors use Floaty Tooties for going very high. Space Required when bouncing vertically: If indoors,
a fairly wide open space is desirable so student/patient doesn't run into
anything or hit expensive equipment with a swinging Tootie Bounce. Normally,
schools use the gym or multipurpose room. If in a optometric office have some
safety people stand in front of any expensive equipment. When used outdoors pick a safe open field with no holes or other
hazards to run into. When used as a Tootie Toss have the student/patient sitting
or kneeling in front of a blank wall so if the Tootie is not caught the wall
will stop it and nothing will be damaged. Procedure: The Tootie Bounce is held
horizontally with the red Tooties sticker readable and near one's tummy. Best
results are achieved when it is held with a hand on each side which should be
about one-third of the way from the red sticker to the far side of the frame.
Start with a regular Tootie (151 grams) and see how many times the
student/patient can bounce it consecutively and up to a level about as high as
their head. After awhile it becomes quite easy and children can easily do 100
bounces or more. Have them count by ones, twos or threes, etc. so they are
improving their math at the same time. Later add a stop watch so they can see
how many bounces they did per minute. It is very important to write down these
records with times and dates. Another column can show the minutes per bounce and
two more columns with bounces per second and seconds per bounce and of course
the number of consecutive bounces that each record is based on. In this way the
child can see how they are improving each day and learning about decimals and
reciprocals at the same time. When they can do 100 easily with a regular Tootie switch to a Floaty Tootie
(66 grams) which is much harder. Even harder is the Tizzy Tootie and the Dreamy
Tootie. The most difficult of all the Tooties is the X-204 Floaty Tootie. Try
the Heavy Duty Tootie also. The Tooties are designed to bounce predictably most of the time and
all of a sudden bounce to the side unexpectedly so that the child has to
maintain alertness at all times. That is why it is so important to use genuine
Tooties which take years to design and test even tho they look deceptively
simple. The Tizzy Tootie took about seven years to perfect. We could get it to
do its magic within a few years but it wouldn't last and we try to design all
Tooties so they last from ten to twenty years or longer. When the Tootie Bounce is used as a Tootie Toss the therapist has more
control of the situation than she would with a regular Tootie Toss. The only
disadvantage is that the therapist needs to sit on the floor with her legs apart
and the Tootie Bounce held at an angle so the child can throw at it. With a
little practice the therapist can make the Tootie go where she wants in order to
make it easier to catch or harder. The child is usually sitting or kneeling with
his back to a wall so that if he throws too hard the Tootie just hits the wall.
Even two years olds can catch quite well if the equipment is set up so the
Tootie hits their chest first. Don't tell them to catch away from their body but
let it happen naturally and always praise them in either case. Even if they
don't catch, praise them for throwing nicely. With a regular Tootie Toss, which has four legs, you can set the Tootie Toss
up at whichever angle is best and the child can practice all by himself with a
little praise now and then from the therapist. For optometric uses the therapist
should be seated behind the Tootie Toss so she can see the patient's eye
movements in regard to where the Tootie is. This application may be started with
students as young as age two or younger. The regular Tootie Toss is much safer
to use in an optometric office even tho the Tootie Bounce has many advantages. For young children who are having difficulty bouncing vertically start with a
round balloon. Inflate several to different diameters to see which is easiest.
Don't use tennis balls or other balls when indoors unless it is a fluff ball or
one of those urethane balls made of long square pieces of urethane foam. For
very young children you may want to have the therapist hold the bounce with the
child from behind or from the other side. For optometrists: Once the patient gets pretty good you may want to see the
results with one eye occluded. After a little while they should be able to
compensate. Also try with various types of prisms to see how long it takes to
compensate. Once the child can do a hundred or more bounces it is time to go outside to a
large field where the Tootie can be bounced higher and higher. The maximum
height for college students is about 150 feet. Always use a Floaty Tootie when
going high as regular Tooties may not last too long if the student misses and
the Tootie hits the ground at 60 mph. The secret is to bounce the Tootie
vertically but let the student discover that for himself. Only one student
should do this at a time so they don't run into each other while looking up.
With two Tootie Bounces you can have two students bouncing one Tootie between
them but this is very difficult. Teachers should seek out a behavioral
optometrist for expert advice on using Tooties. It is easy to calculate how high the Tootie goes if you have a stop watch
using the standard falling body formula which is S = 1/2 gtý. Start the timer
when the Tootie is at the maximum height and stop it when it hits the Bounce net
or the ground. For simplicity just square the time in seconds and multiply by 16
to get how many feet high the Tootie went. In case you want to know t is the
time in seconds and g is the constant for gravity which is 32.2 feet per second.
S is the height distance. This can be a great math exercise for students. When bouncing high the students become exhausted very quickly in a few
minutes and are glad to take turns with others. Those watching can be
calculating the height of each bounce. Bouncing high is a great way to cure
hyperactivity quickly but there is more to it than just bouncing. All ages love
using the Tootie Bounce. Almost any learning disability can be cured quickly
using Tooties, even dyslexia, when you know how. Creative Ideas,

Most are size one, washable & autoclavable.
2. Place Tootie on your head and jump so that
Tootie leaves your head about one inch (2.5 cm). Try it again so
you can do 25 consecutive without touching the Tootie. Be sure
to stop between each jump.
3. When you can do that easily you
are ready to throw the Tootie under your leg and catch it on the
top of your head. It must stay there. This seems impossible at
first but is actually quite easy if you are age eight and older
and use your brain also. This exercise has many benefits. When
you can do it easily with a regular Tootie try it with the more
difficult Tooties. Later put the Tootie crossways on your toe
and catch it on your head. And if you have a Tootie Launcher try
it from the Launcher which is the easiest way to catch on head.
